And that looks like a big water pipe going up to the nest too! Dang, and on the east cape we are still off-grid!

Two sea eagles decided that the top of our final electrical pole was a good neighborhood for raising eaglets. As they built an ever-larger nest, strange things began to happen to voltages at the ranch, and one of the three incoming voltage phases failed completely.

I had to call the power company, who came and pushed the huge nest off the pole – which I then burned immediately to remove all raw material for a new nesting effort.

Darned if the parents started building again immediately -ensuring a lasting nest by building the foundations out of long strands of rusty barbed wire they had found lying around.

One night, there was a bright flash (13,800 volts), the nest caught fire, and our power went out. The power company were somewhat tight-lipped this time around and it took several cold beers to restore international harmony.
