Russ, you really ought to invest in a well-concealed cannon! Or maybe a laser lens for your camera that'd look like you were just
innocently taking pics while you perforated those shrimpers along the water line! Ken Bondy - 2-13-2011 at 10:56 AM
Beautiful photos Russ - nasty subject.DENNIS - 2-13-2011 at 11:51 AM

Ya know...I realize it's impractical to suggest such a boycot, but after seeing the resolve of the people in Egypt, I think anything is possible for
those who want it badly enough.Von - 2-13-2011 at 12:14 PM

And many along Shell Beach buy those shrimp, I know, I've eaten them.Cypress - 2-13-2011 at 12:50 PM
The gill nets do more damage to the fish stocks than the shrimp nets.Von - 2-13-2011 at 01:04 PM
oh the Gill nets~damaging the fish stocks ok didnt know~ I guess it would matter if it was illegal they wouldnt be doing it :-) mmm~Joelt - 2-13-2011 at 02:19 PM
I wonder if they too say that it's just not like it used to be? As much as they scrape the bottom there it has to be hard to fill the boat. That said,
I am one who has bought shrimp on Shell Beach. Some of the best I've had. I try not to buy fish in stores but I will buy shrimp when I'm there on
occasion.Russ - 2-13-2011 at 02:50 PM
It was a gorgeous morning and thought I'd get away and fish and try to find some wildlife to shot. No luck at my favorite "Flat Rocks". But I didn't
put much into it there and wanted to get to the estuary at San Marcos Tierra and maybe shot an Osprey. I Love this ever changing lagoon, estuary,
harbor. I threw krocs for awhile then switched to a scampi. Nothing, not even a bump and I worked the shore for nearly an hour. Oh well, I'll just
take some pics then.
Here's the mouth and it has closed up by 80% since November.
Looking towards the end where there is still a bit of water flowing in from a artesian well. There used to be thick plant life all along the shore and
snook and years ago freshwater ducks. I love this place. It's so peaceful and always changing. But wait! Zoom in a bit. What the help is that in the
very back?
Damn! It's a frigging net boat! Ain't anything sacred?
I fish a bit more with out a bump and a family shows up to enjoy the beautiful day. They launch their boat and some others are fishing at the mouth
when the damn netter runs up and I thought they were going to leave. NOT! They toss an anchor on shore right next to the peaceful family
and make a set right along the shore line in front of me. I wanna puke!
they run their net down the shore line out about 20 yards and throw the other anchor onshore.
Then zoom back and forth scaring all the fish I didn't catch into the gill net.
And start hauling it in.
I had to leave!

that's in the estuary itself, right russ???....makes me sick too....beachgirl and i spotted a big school of grande snook in the river last week; saw
them two days in a row....decided on the third day to go after them with rod and reel....too late!...a panguero in the river had cleaned em out the
night before with his nets..nothing left...so sadRuss - 2-13-2011 at 03:19 PM
yep, that's inside. Makes me sick about the river too.
Think I'll go read a Nora Roberts book. I need something with a happy ending.Cypress - 2-13-2011 at 03:27 PM
Russ, A picture is worth a thousand words. Sad. Those gill nets are killing the Sea of Cortez.
