and the fun continues....we went to an Indian mecca CHAMULA, famous for art and crafts, for meeting at church on Sundays to baptise, have funeral
processions and to pray. we were NOT allowed to take pics in the church but it was amazing: hundreds of prayers, on the floor usu on their knees,
with at leat 50 candles in front of the family of 4 or 5, praying in their native tongue. Praying for a sick one, praying for love, praying for a good
birth....

the market is jam packed with throngs of sellers from all the mountains surrounding Chamula

and then we drove to Palenque with a stop at AGUA AZUL. It was not azul or blue cause the sky was gray but you can feel the Maya magic !!!

Spend some time in this area - so much to see. Lots of Maya ruins sites, limestone cave near Teopisca (so. of San Cristobal); the Zapatista village
of Oventic (not far from Chamula) is interesting - bring them a bag of onions or oranges or something to donate - there's a boarding school there; a
fabulous archeological museum at Tuxtla Guttierez (sp?) if you want to backtrack a little. And if it hasn't been raining, the road to the village
where you can hike to Laguna Miramar would be an adventure for you. For sure, take a boat from Frontera Corozal to see the Yaxchilan ruins. Chiapas
is one of my favorite states in Mexico.comitan - 2-14-2011 at 11:33 AM

everyone realizes, that the Aztecs looked upon the Monarchs as the souls of their ancestors, right?

Back in 1981 when I was a good hippy (as opposed to a bad hippy)
I rode on top of the bus (like the fabulous furry freek bros) from San Cristobal to Palenque. After tasting the local hongos magicos I ended up at a
beautiful freshwater pool/paradise. I got nekkid (thanks for the proper spelling skeet!) jumped in and ended up sitting on an old log. Well, the log
was full of ticks and I had about 200 imbedded in my body. Luckily in my blissful state i was able to think "oh, well...they need a place to live
too."Iflyfish - 2-15-2011 at 02:53 PM
Eat the shrooms and then look at the butterflies!!
Mrsfish and I visited the Monarchs this year and it was a trip of a lifetime! You could actually HEAR the butterflies wings beat there were so many of
them! Rode horses up to the sight, great experience in and of itself.
