Bussing North to See the Whales

Eli - 2-14-2011 at 06:50 AM

As part of my 60th birthday celebration, I am giving myself the gift of a trip up to G.N. to visit the whales with Shari later this week.

My Hijada, Xochitl, and I will be traveling by bus, and plan to leave Los Barriles Thursday mid morning.

I am hoping we can make it to Loreto by evening and find a mid price, ($500 pesos) a night hotel near the bus station. Anyone have suggestions?

Also, the idea is to catch the bus from Loreto to G.N. mid morning to early afternoon, so that we can arrive in G.N. not to late evening of Friday.

My son-in-law informs me that the buses don't always stop in Loreto. I figure we can buy the 2nd leg ticket (Loreto to G.N.) in La Paz when we buy our tickets to Loreto and confirm with them there at the bus station, but if anyone has an insight into this, I would love to hear it.

there are a couple of very uh, basic, hotels around that price near the bus station. one on Salvatierra, the street bordering the south side of the bus station, near the large Pemix, called Hotel Salvaterra. another on Benito Juarez, which is the other main drag on the north side of the bus station, called the Hotel Brenda. though I can't really recommend either, the Brenda is the better of the two and I did stay there once years ago when money was real tight.
unless you are really counting your pennies, you'd be much better off at the Hotel Santa Fe, the big white hotel you can see from the station, which was running specials at 59 US. they are owned by the Villas de Palmar group which has kept them full lately since the resort is running way behind schedule so I don't know if that price is still available.
or the Hotel Angra, on Benito Juarez, for about that I think.
see previous posts on hotels in Loreto.

Yeah, Rhinetransit thanks for this information, I read you about about basic hotels........I always carry incense, you know just in case, sometimes the plumbing in these places, no traps, I can handle no seat on the w.c., if it just be clean. Oh yeah, I carry whipes too. Ay Que Mi Mexico!!!!!

Traveling on a budget I have stumbled in to some pretty funky places, i.e. where they rent by the hour. I am at least trying to avoid doing that this trip.

Saludos, Sara

Thank You Roberta, I will take you up on it.

I don't know Shair, while Xochitl is a master sleeper on the bus, and if she had her way, we would do an all nighter, that is most likely how she will return home on her own. Me, I want to take it as easy as I can......... Honestly, I sleep better on a bus during the day than at night, still........ we are talking maybe 15 minutes every 3 hrs. at best. I am about maxed out after a 6 hr. bus ride, claustrophobia sets in. I just can't get full on comfy on a bus.

Nena, thanks Mija, alguin dia our paths will again cross.

Diver, I just checked it out and you are right that ABC site works good. I can tell you, it is so much handier than the girl at the L.B. bus station.

Looking at it, I thought about going ahead and booking/paying on line. And than I reflected on the Mexicana ticket bought last summer that I am still trying to resolve refund on. That was the first time in my whole life I ever paid anything on line and for sure I got pie in the face on that one, sigh, ni modo...........In some ways, I am such a coward.

A note about the special rate at the Santa Fe- It is for one queen bed. It jumps up to like $90 for two queens. You can get two beds at the Hacienda Suites next to the Santa Fe, just the other side of Domingo's Place restaurant.
