I do NOT live in Baja and I am not there for months at one time yet...I am wandering around in my truck (going thru Tijuana usually) and spending much
of my time in the San Ignacio area and north-spending abt 5-6 weeks 2X a year. It is getting to the point that it would be very convenient to contact
my friends at some of my destinations on the way down-they have cells and if near a certain mountain can get my calls.
Any recommendations for phones and service so that I can call someone when lost in Tijuana or check w Antonio re hotel servations or call my friends
in Vizcaino to update arrival times and other info??

Nextel with the walkie-talkie service is the Baja Norte standard of the masses. Chirp.

hi there...just get one of those little 400 peso cell phones and ya get 100 pesos of minutes with that...get it registered there at the telcel office
either in sta.rosalia or the one in Vizcaino across from the pemex is great too. Then you just buy phone cards when ya need them...you can have 10
frequently called numbers registered by dialing *264 and other plans are available for long distance etc....just ask the vendedor...they work great
and you just use it while you are here. I think if you dont use it for 6 months or something they cancel the # but ya can just get another 100 chip
and off ya go.

Yes, across from the town Pemex in Vizcaino has a new ultra modern big Telmex store...check your U2U for detailed info.

I have a Telecel phone for my friends in Asuncion and around town..
BUT I use the AT&T Viva Mexico plan for my SD/States phone.. No roaming and can use my speeddial no prob.
Better connected in Baja then SD

I have a GoPhone plan (AT&T) now which is prepaid and 25 cents per minute for roaming in Baja plus $1.30 Roaming Charge each day you use the phone
from Baja. The reception is great and there are a lot of phones to choose from and of course you can use it in the U.S. which is only 10 cents a
minute.
I'm just a weekender plus a week 4 times a year so it works great for me.
Just got back from a 4 day'r and used the phone quite a bit as my wife stayed behind and used about $15 worth of minutes making various calls. I'm
going again this weekend for another 4 day'r but my wife will be with me so the calls will be very limited. That's two trips made in the same month
for $20 worth of calls compared to my former North America Plan which had grown to $63 monthly with 450 anytime minutes. Both plans had excellent
roaming coverage.

nextel is lame. somewhere in maneardero i can get a signal. when i get in the border lines at tj there is no signal!
my att phone works anywhere along the 1 where there is a traffic light.......

ted....in a medical emergency, get to a hospital and ask to be flown out by a local airline, keep the receipt and hope that your medical plan pays for
the flight...it's much faster, cheaper and the idea is to get to medical help nob asap...unless you need medical care in the airplane in which case
you need a full medivac which will take longer to get to you.
if you are in a remote area, far from a hospital and know what the problem is, you can even get a small plane to land there and take to to TJ where
you can have an ambulance waiting for you at the airstrip that takes you to secondary where hopefully a friend or loved one can arrange an ambulance
at the border to get you to a hospital.

I use AT&T. I have been all over Europe, Asia, and Mexico. I am on permanent International roaming, but you can get temporary roam also. I called
home and sent an image from the rim of Copper Canyon. No problems throughout China.
