if you had 10 days in mid march.......

woody with a view - 2-17-2011 at 07:07 PM

to spend on a beach in baja, where would you go if you wanted to catch some fish at this slow time of year? we drag our pop up trailer to camp so a nice little beach would be nice. mulege, loreto, BA, LB? 2 days driving each way is do-able.

2 days on the water w/ panguero for sure. suggestions please!

Momma wants to stretch some fish lips.....:light:

bajaguy - 2-17-2011 at 07:16 PM

Join us in GN for a whale watch!!!!

woody with a view - 2-17-2011 at 07:24 PM

our dates are 11~20/21

bajaguy - 2-17-2011 at 07:31 PM

we will be there March 16-17 & 18....room in the boat!!

woody with a view - 2-17-2011 at 07:35 PM

well, EVERYTHING is dependent on the surf forecast as we cross southbound. perhaps as we get closer to the launch date that might be fun, again.

Woody...you want info for the Sea Of Cortez side?

shari - 2-17-2011 at 07:53 PM

yeah Woodman...the pyjama-rama whale party at Cowboy Motel is on the 16th...or we can have a dance around the fire naked party at your campsite at the lagoon too...sounds good!!!

Mulegena & her seester may be jumping on the beds and panga with us too.

woody with a view - 2-17-2011 at 07:58 PM

sounds like a real party..... we'll prolly end up at "THAT" spot where i bumped into you and Juan last month, and if so, we're in. we really want some fish, but like snowflakes in hell, they are far and few in march....

BajaBlanca - 2-17-2011 at 08:14 PM

yeah .... tough time to find fish in march ....but come and visit - there is always shore fishing !!

shari - 2-17-2011 at 08:19 PM

Ken & Adan are joining us tomorrow in GN for some whale bonding too.

torch - 2-17-2011 at 08:21 PM

I know at least for me that all of my (vacation dates) can and always change with the - surf, fish, weather and women. hold on it used to be all about the women - where did that come from?

woody with a view - 2-18-2011 at 06:28 AM

tell those guys i said hi, and that we'll see them in a few weeks if they're still around.

LaloinBaja - 2-18-2011 at 09:55 AM

In Mulege...There is rock fishing off the beach at Punta Prieta....Other side of colina from lighthouse...Nice CXabrilla.....Squid strips or a white scampi work best.:yes::yes:

David K - 2-18-2011 at 10:09 AM

Bahia las Animas... that is south of L.A. Bay... and I can even give you a GPS knowing the sky won't fall if I do!

woody with a view - 2-18-2011 at 10:24 AM

David K - 2-18-2011 at 11:05 AM

Have a fun trip Woody!

Cypress - 2-18-2011 at 11:22 AM

Mid March? Fishing down on the bayou. Hawaii? Baja? Got to go with the signs, the $$$ signs.

Pompano - 2-18-2011 at 11:48 AM

If you do decide on the Mulege area..because of the excellent beach camping I am imagining?.....then look up either Mateo or Alejendro (Alex) in Mulege. They are both good guides/pangueros.. who will take you to some cabrilla, tails or whatever is biting at the time. Ask for them at the Serinadad Resort.

Mateo lives next to the river boat ramp. Alex runs the Mesquite Bar downtown when not guiding or chasing skirts.

If no luck there, stop by mi casa and raid my freezer for fillets.

yeah, mcfez, mateo, the guide down by the river mouth, is a fish finding fool!...and one helluva nice guy to boot!....you'd love a day on the water with him!....we're taking him out on our big boat this next tuesday; it's really cool that way; he just drives the boat and takes us to all his favorite spots and we just sit around and wait for the fish to chomp with no responsibility...he also has a nice big panga that he guides out of..try him, you'll like him1

Cypress - 2-18-2011 at 03:22 PM

Need a guide to catch fish? Might as well buy 'em at the local fish market. It'd save you a few $$$.

Gaucho - 2-18-2011 at 03:25 PM

What about somewhere around TS?

woody with a view - 2-18-2011 at 03:29 PM

too much driving for 10 day.... when do i RELAX?

Gaucho - 2-18-2011 at 03:33 PM

Weather permitting, I'd go to BA. Hopefully we'll get another high pressure by then!

If I were here in mid-March you'd be more than welcome to come fish with us..as would any other visiting nomad.

For sure, I'll be fishing..but off the Pacific coast of Panama..over the Hannibal Banks...where the monsters live!

I see Mateo every day at the Mulege boat ramp..I'll tell him to plug the biggest leak and get ready.

Cypress - 2-18-2011 at 03:48 PM

Pompano, Good luck! Looking forward to your fishing report and pictures.

tis good to have options. but, where do i find Mateo? if i start asking around, i'm afraid everyone i ask will introduce himself as Mateo!:light:

and where would a pacific side guy camp and expect his stuff to be there upon return?

Cypress - 2-18-2011 at 04:03 PM

woody with a view, Just go to the boat ramp on the south side of the river and ask. Camp? See Manuel at Don Chano's on the north side of the river.:D

Pompano - 2-18-2011 at 04:24 PM

Woody..like Cypress says..find Mateo at his casa just across the road from the river boat ramp near the Serinadad Hotel. Everyone in town knows Mateo..andl I doubt any would pull a stunt like saying they were him.

I think you mean 'where to camp and leave your gear unprotected on the Paciific coast' of Baja..right? Can't help you with any current or good advice. I could have years ago...but this ain't Kansas anymore, Todo. Baja...it is what it is. RThieves abound these days,.

woody with a view - 2-18-2011 at 04:29 PM

thanks.

Spearo - 2-18-2011 at 04:50 PM

I second (or third?) the vote for Mateo. Hombre knows the spots, I learned a bunch going out with him a couple years ago.

I'm going to have to start looking for Pompano's Yar Craft when at la Bahia next month. That thing always seems to have jurel hanging over the side.

"MATEO" - MULEGE FISHING GUIDE

Pompano - 2-18-2011 at 05:13 PM

I first met Mateo back in ...well, a long time ago. I'm going to quit mentioning how long I have hanging around down here..I'm not that old!..I couldn't be!! :(:wow:

He a righteous dude. (..'righteous dude'...Now that's another first time expression for me..I don't much like it.)

Jurel catcher..so much so, we have named a good yellowtain hole after him. Pompano's Ho..er..Mateo's Hole. And without further ado..here he is in action at that very same hole.

(Mateo...you now owe me 3 Pacificos - payable when I see you on the Cortez)

it's gonna be too chilly for night time nekidness, at least for this kid. but a good ole fashioned pajama party sounds epic.....

we will plan to leave our camp set up and pay the cartel and/or coyotes to keep an eye on things while we're gone. what is the itinerary? the 16th is great. we'd prolly get to GN late afternoon, get a room, find the biggest scallops in town, catch a buzz, and wake up and go to the lagoon before the wind comes up in the morning. is it going to be a group buy at the hotel? can you get us a rez?

shari - 2-21-2011 at 10:47 AM

woooo hoooo...OK then, I'll make ya a reservation...one or two nights?
Looks like we are doing anther Nomad trip starring Baja Bernie and his lovely copilot on March 10 too if that works better for ya...Cowboy on the 9th, first panga out on the morning of the 10th!

woody with a view - 2-21-2011 at 10:59 AM

no, we launch across the border the 11th at 4am. we will just stay the night of the 16th, pet some whales, and explore the coast on the way beck to camp-unless plans change!
