After our trip to the U.S. Consulate in TJ, we were starving.
Our friendly parking attendant at the consulate told us to go to "The Sombrero" and he pointed off to the left at Aguacaliente Blvd.
I am usually not successful at getting the Growling Gourmet to try new places, but, he was in a good mood today. We drove by it and he actually
agreed to turn around and go back.
The building is literally shaped like a sombrero, painted brown.
The parking attendant at the restaurant guided us in, past several expensive cars (SUV's, Mercedes and BMW's).
At 10:45 am on a Friday morning, the restaurant was packed with businessmen with briefcases and iPads and with well-dressed, well-manicured and
coiffed ladies-who-lunch.
We went through the usual hassle at a new place - "You can't bring a dog in here!" They called the manager, we gave him a copy of the Mexican Federal
Law regarding service dogs. He read the document very carefully and then looked up and said, "You win." He also asked if he could make a copy for
his own future reference.
We ordered an omelette and chile relleno plate. Both were good, but the fantastic, best tasting dish was the fruit plate - sliced apples (green and
red), watermelon, papaya, pear and strawberries with cottage cheese and walnuts with granola sprinkles. The cafe americano was good and the cafe de
la olla was excellent.
And yes, you can order an ostrich egg omelette and/or an ostrich steak ("bajo in colesterol and rica en omega 3')
We had a delicious meal, with great service, and before we left, Miguel, the manager, gave us a beautiful, four-color handout promoting "Chiles en
Nogada".

I like El Portrero too. Nice ambiance and good service. Traditional Mexican cuisine.
Last time there I ate rabbit in mole sauce, total meal came to about $20 per person.

Across the street from our condo . . . according to my wife, one of the true landmarks of old TJ. "Portrero" would be where you parked your horse
(hitching post) and in fact there used to be a statue of a horse out front.
Like tjBill said, good food/variety, nice people, well priced . . .

"EL potrero" is the best always have breakfast there when in tijuana...
recomend the patron...plate..yummy

You drive down aguacaliente past the two towers de TJ and a few bloks down on your left side is the restaurant its one big mexican sombrero make a u
turn you cant mis it..
there is a mexican tile store next to it...
