Addition coming along nicely

shari - 2-23-2011 at 08:48 PM

roberto and his brothers are getting our new walls up lickety split on our new addition at the Blowhole casa...it is so exciting and will be a great room to hang out in.

Anyone who has been to our house knows that we need a bigger house....man room for all Juan's fishing stuff, dive gear, radios, hip waders etc etc...I am soooooo looking forward to getting it out of the living room!

And we will have kind of a common room overlooking the blowhole with books, maps, photos and baja information...backgammon table....who knows???

and today was a historical day here as they started to lay the new water line out to our point!!! wahooo.
things have come a long way since I moved to our house...we had no water (carried jugs), no phone, only an outhouse, no reliable power or any indoor plumbing....those were the days....NOT!

David K - 2-23-2011 at 09:15 PM

Great News Shari!

Perhaps I can contribute to the Baja Map or Book collection?

It will be nice indeed...

Paulina - 2-23-2011 at 09:16 PM

The foundation rock work is beautiful!

It would be fun to see a photo of your place from when you first moved in to today's casa.

Bob H - 2-23-2011 at 10:48 PM

Shari, is this room connected to your existing house? I am trying to figure out where the addition is located. Is it extending from the side where the living room is? Looks great!

ELINVESTIG8R - 2-24-2011 at 05:54 AM

Very nice Shari!!

shari - 2-24-2011 at 08:20 AM

Yes Bob, it connects to our living room...a few steps down into the man room. The library will overlook the blowhole and YES YES YES David, I would love to add to the baja book n map collection.

Phase II will be the swanky suite/party room up top of the whole thing...poco a poco.

Paulina, I'll have to look for that photo of the house when it was just a box on a rock!

Lauriboats - 2-24-2011 at 11:21 AM

Looks great Shari.

LaTijereta - 2-25-2011 at 07:30 AM

Shari.. Looks great..what a nice view!

Question... As the guys are building the block walls > Are they filling the blocks "cells" with concrete to add strength?

shari - 2-25-2011 at 07:55 AM

We decided to get our blocks in Vizcaino where there is an awesome block maker who's blocks are far superior to what we get here and cheaper. The blocks are 7.5 pesos a block....8 pesos delivered to Asuncion. We are not filling all the cells but some for added strength....and might add laja rock face on the front too...downside is, the addition blocks my view of moonset from my bed...dang.

they started to lay the new water line out to our point

mcfez - 3-2-2011 at 07:34 AM

Oh yes!
We got ours a year and a half ago. Cost of water 90% less for us. The water truck was killer.

And them long showers...o yea!

shari - 3-2-2011 at 07:37 AM

water line early done...should be hooked up by next week I figure. Sure will be nice to have water...wasnt so long ago we were hauling it in in jugs

check out this cool method of marking where the water line digger has to go....a coke bottle on a stick with holes punched in the bottom to shake out the lime...LOVE low tech!

OMG!!!

I'm going to use this method on our sites!

Lime.....whats a bag cost?
Just curious..it makes great whitewash

shari - 3-2-2011 at 08:55 AM

lime is super cheap....the coke bottle has a portion of the side cut out so you can load the lime into it...works great for marking out areas.

Eli - 3-2-2011 at 10:26 AM

I can easily imagine how excited you are about this addition. Buena Suerte Hermana.

Gaucho - 3-2-2011 at 10:49 AM

Looks beautiful Shari. That stone foundation rocks! (no pun intended)

Actually that is high tech Shari - they used to just poke a hole in the bottom of the bag and try to walk a straight line...

Iflyfish - 3-2-2011 at 04:15 PM

Wow, wow, wow! Can't wait to spend some time there! Great construction. How are they dealing with the issue of potential tremalos?

That sure looks like a clean construction!! Quality, quality, quality.

shari - 5-14-2011 at 09:53 AM

This years abalone season has enabled us to start work again on the addition...so the crew is now putting up the wood to sustain pouring the concrete roof next week...a big step! poco a poco

the view sure is killer from the room...I cant wait to furnish it! We are hoping its ready for fishing season.

Curt63 - 5-14-2011 at 09:56 AM

Real nice!

Udo - 5-14-2011 at 10:29 AM

Should be ready by Christmas of this year, right?

BajaGringo - 5-14-2011 at 11:08 AM

scouter - 5-14-2011 at 12:28 PM

wow nice view........ priceless.......

shari - 5-20-2011 at 04:54 PM

today I went on the roof for the first time and oooeeeee baby...what a view...finally can see over into the bay! Roberto and crew got everything ready for the big pour of the roof tomorrow...I am soooo excited!!!

I was thinking of bajagringo all day today as he was pouring his roof today...bet they are all happily drinking beer by now!

DSC08951-1.JPG - 41kB

shari - 5-20-2011 at 05:09 PM

only problem is I'm gonna have to wash the darn windows all the time...I could feel the mist from the blowhole on my face taking this picture...which is why we will have a walk around patio up top.

Funny you say that Shari as I was thinking about you guys too and the day that awaits you all tomorrow. We got the pour done and it came out great.

We did have a great BBQ this afternoon of carne asada, pollo, almeja y ostiones. We also went through almost 3 cases of beer and a few shots of tequila to boot.

Really glad it's done and looking forward to your photos tomorrow...

Mulegena - 5-20-2011 at 08:47 PM

I'll be there, too, but not at 6 a.m. when the work crew begins their tap dancing on your livingroom roof!!

shari - 5-21-2011 at 07:20 AM

AND THEYRRRRRRRRRR OFF! I made extra strong coffee at 6:30 for that extra energy.

I love the sound of the cement mixer in the morning!!! They plan to be finshed by 10:00 and then the party begins....gonna be a long day!!! Juan is getting the "disca" ready and filling the ice chest.

Ay Que Shari, Although I do not share your love for the sound of the cement mixer, I get the excitement of a roof pour; it is kind of like a Masons Ballet to watch the coordination between the workers. Wishing You All the luck in the world today, have a great Colado!

shari - 5-21-2011 at 12:16 PM

done deal...losa(cement roof) poured quick and dirty as surdoc's photos will show...the albanil ballet was beautiful to watch and came off without a hitch. Many thanks to Roberto's crew and Surdoc the onsite medic...just in case. Feasting and suckin back rojos now. Next is to plaster inside, bathroom walls up, floor poured, windows and rock & roll.

standingwave - 5-21-2011 at 01:37 PM

Nice!!!

surfdoc - 5-21-2011 at 09:59 PM

Unfortunatley.............the onsite Medico was called...........

Damn.............One of the workers had a mistep while watering down the floor............and fell.
No major injuries, but Juan and Shari are going with him to GN for Xrays as a precaution...........

Thats all the info I feel comfortable to put out........... Otherwise beautiful new roof/floor..........

Iflyfish - 5-21-2011 at 10:19 PM

Great artists always want to mark their work. Hope he is ok.

Do hope the worker is not seriously injured----it is a long drive for an x-ray---how well we know.

Bob H - 5-21-2011 at 11:32 PM

Wow, what a fantastic addition in progress.... and the VIEW! Breathtaking!!!

Audrey and I have to get back down there to see all the changes.

The new place is looking great Shari! I truly hope your worker is O.K.! Are the calicos biting yet?? I have to make another run north, and may stop in on the way back. Maybe get Stan out of your hair for a while! LOL

Bajaboy - 5-22-2011 at 06:37 AM

Looks like a great place for a wedding....:light:

bajabass - 5-22-2011 at 06:45 AM

Wedding!!! Is Stan marrying the tamale girl from Vizcaino???? LOL

BajaGringo - 5-22-2011 at 10:51 AM

Congratulations on getting the losa done Shari and Juan; I know this will be a great improvement to your home and lifestyle. Unfortunately, pouring a losa can be a dangerous job with the height and exposed rebar / armex to trip over. I do sincerely hope that the accident just turns out to be a minor thing....

surfdoc - 5-22-2011 at 12:49 PM

Talked with Shari today, Soft Tissue injury only..

So outside of being sore for awhile, nothing a few tecates and rubbin some dirt on it can't cure.

Very glad that was the extent of this !

Enjoy the Viente peso Sancho my friend!

shari - 5-23-2011 at 08:29 AM

all is well...Roberto's angels must have caught him and softened the blow...not even a bruise...whew. After the roof was poured I sighed a big breath of relief that all went well...roberto fell when he came back later in the day to water it down....was yanking on the hose and lost his balance....
sheesh...

Glad you liked your present Mike...cant wait to see that slide show!!!

Iflyfish - 5-23-2011 at 02:31 PM

This is good news, he better keep the yanking on the hose story to himself!

Ok, ok, I know.

Looking forward to more pics. Great project. Can't believe how fast that was! An awesome addition.

Vince - 5-23-2011 at 05:16 PM

Shari-Your place is looking good. This brings back so many good memories of when I built my place in 1971-72 on the other side, Coyote Bay. This was just before the road was in which made it a little more difficult. But it looks very similiar with the blocks and foundation. We are still enjoying it 40 years later as I'm sure you will yours. Good luck.

David K - 5-23-2011 at 05:22 PM

'71-'72? Wow... just as the paved road was coming north from La Paz... You must have known J.W. Black ('Black Jack') the inventor of so many off road machines used by Erle Stanley Gardner in the '60's!? Pompano often talks of him, and helped me talk to J.W. by phone a few years ago when I was searching for Choral Pepper's lost mission (J.W. was there as well).

Vince - 5-26-2011 at 12:35 PM

Yes, I knew J.W. Black. He and his father were camped nearby one time I was there, mid or late '70's. I had my 17 foot Boston Whaler (1965 model) anchored in front of the house. An offshore wind came up during the night and the anchor dragged. I got up early and as usual checked on the boat and it was gone. I ran down the beach and J.W.Black offered to take me out and look for the boat. We did and found it just before it was about to go ashore on a rocky point. Thanks, J.W. , I still have that boat and use it every time we go down. On another trip there, his father died. J.W. was said to have put him (or left him in) the sleeping bag and brought him home.

Pacifico - 5-26-2011 at 06:37 PM

Shari, Love the pics!!! Anymore recent updates / pics?

shari - 5-26-2011 at 08:11 PM

we have to wait 2 weeks for the roof to set before removing the wood braces so we can then plaster the walls, put the floor in...then the windows etc etc. Meanwhile we are doing rock work on some walls around the property.

and that rockwork is promising to be beautiful. Your maestro is giving meticulous attention to your directives with sensitivity to the curvature of the land, the relationship to the cliffs' meandering edge. Its a pleasure to watch this develop!
