USAA pulling out of Baja

bajamigo - 3-2-2011 at 08:55 AM

For those of us (perhaps) few, who have been covered by the USAA border policies, new arrangements will have to be made. USAA called this morning and offered a number of alternatives for replacing the auto liability coverage they offered to Americans living within 100 miles of the border; those policies are being discontinued due to low participation. Bottom line, I decided to purchase standard US liability coverage from them and maintain "driver's license" insurance for Mexico. Of course, that leaves me on the hook for collision. Any ideas?

ow that is a smart idea! Bundling with SENTRI in theory gets the insurer the cream of low-risk drivers. Nice job geoff.

But does that cover you on both sides of the border as the USAA Border Policy did?

Nope, just south

Bajamigo.....USAA has never provided the liability coverage aspect in Mexico, but they did cover comp/collision for your own vehicle 100 miles south of the border.

Liability coverage must originate from a Mexican company or else it is a worthless piece of paper in the eyes of the authorities.

You're probably right. My policy describes its collision coverage, but I always had the sense that USAA, while otherwise supremely competent, wasn't sure about what they were offering in these border policies. That may be one of the reasons they're simply dropping the program.

I wish USAA had a Mexican insurance division! Great service and a great company.

Pulling out of Baja isn't easy, but it's doable.
