Arrive by road - leave by air - FMM issues

If I come down by road for a couple months getting my FMM at the border what are the FMM issues if I want to leave (and return) from Cabo by commercial air for a few days to take care of some business at home (US)?

When you return to the States your tourist visa will be surrendered. That means you'll need another when returning.

It's a vicious cycle.

Are you inferring you will return to the Cape by
air? If so, I think it is DIFFICULT, maybe not impossible, to not pay for another
fmm when you buy a ticket from the US back to Mex,
it is included in the taxes for a flight from the US to
Mex. So, even if you were able to ask Mex Immigration
at the Cabo Airport that you will be returning and you
would like ti keep the fmm, I don't see where you would come out ahead. But I'm under the impression you have to give
up the fmm when flying out of Mex. Obviously when crossing back by land you can keep the fmm for a future crossing

The one time I drove down and flew back my visa was taken. I did't realize it at the time and I thought I had lost it.

I wonder if you can ask to keep it?
