People now days don't know what a real submarine sandwich is. Jan, remember when a sub was made on real bread with a crust? And real, quality cold cuts and cheeses?

People today don't know what food is.

The story is meaningless in that franchisers such as Doctors Associates (the corporation behind Subway) have a fairly low bar to meet financially. Not to mention that they apparently could not care less if competing franchisees were located right across the street from each other. This fact is ref;ected in the franchise fee charged to a prospective owner. Almost anyone can get a Subway franchise.

I think that the one overriding issue with Subway's success is that the customer can watch the process and is involved with what goes on their sandwich.

But, A sub? A gyro? A hoagie? Geez. IMHO, local small business folks will provide the best to the customer. Given that Subway can be found in a vast array of different ethnic communities, as well in gas stations and such, just seems to me that buying a really great sandwich depends upon factors beyond local ethnic ownership paying minimum wage to illiterates that prepare your sandwich.

Mike.............try and find a Jason's Deli in PHX...........not bad, great selection. Other than that, a small mom & pop place run by transplanted Jewish folks from New York. Unfortunately, not many people can make a Hoagie (sub) or a pie.........

Find a Gandolfo's New York Deli and you won't be sorry! There is one just over a mile from my house... and everyone in our family who has tried it before asks us to take them there again!

Billp, Yes I Remember Good Sub Sandwiches

I do not eat at Subway or McDonald's - there are too many other wonderful, indepent places to try.

I have had great hamburgers at Ruben's, Splash, Pescador and La Bamba.

They serve delicious, hand-battered, onion rings at Splash, Pescador and La Bamba

Sadly, there are no great subs anywhere, at least that I have found.

I would love to find a great torta place, a great torta ahogada place and a great cemitas place in Rosarito.

And a great Mexican bacon-wrapped dog place.

OK to good tortas ahogadas in chula vista, toys-r-us parking lot

Po-Boys!!!! A sandwitch fit for a king! You can make 'em with seafood, meats etc. But you have to have good french bread and that can be hard to find.

Weinerschnitzle [SP?] is having their 50th birthday [I think] and BWHDs are on the menu. Saw it on TV so it must be true.

Hi mtgoat

Thanks for the info, and, yes, I know about the Tortas Ahogadas truck in the parking lot of the Toys R Us in Chula Vista, it has been reviewed by appreciative San Diego food bloggers. See: http://mmm-yoso.typepad.com/mmmyoso/2009/10/eating-on-the-ho...

Unfortunately, when we travel to the otra lada, we are overscheduled and mostly only eat on the fly (sometimes at McDonalds) :(

What are your recipes for a great sub sandwich and a great bacon-wrapped hot dog to prepare at home? (And please source the ingredients.)

Ciao, GJ

People need to understand the difference between a deli and a sandwich shop. BIG DIF.

Anyone in the LA area knows well that the best deli food can be found at Langers just off McArthur park. Pastrami to die for.

Hoagies, subs, gyros and whatever, are bread-intense, and are not strictly speaking, deli food.

Jersey Mike's...

El Camote - 3-9-2011 at 05:30 PM

I grew up on these subs. It was a mom and pop shop that originated in the town I was born.

Try a #2 "Mike's Way" and you'll never go back to Subway. :smug:

I have relatives in LHC and am usually there once a year for a week or so. The best restaurants I've found were Angelina's Italian Kitchen, Cha-bones and, for breakfast, the place below that brewery restaurant on the island. EDIT: found the name, Makai Restaurant.

Really agree about Subway's crappy bread...........the bread is half the appeal of a sandwich.

Agree on Angelina's, haven't done Cha-bones or Makai. The best breakfast in town is at the best Mexican in town which is Casa Fernandez. Try the chicken fried steak with chorizo gravey(gotta request the chorizo gravey)

Bread!..the staff of life.

In Baja...in Baja Sur...in Bahia de Concepcion...in Bahia de Coyote.

I just bought a loaf of fresh-baked sourdough bread from the new mgr. of La Estrella del Mar roadside cafe at Rancho Coyote. The place once known as Bony's.

I had to buy this bread. After the new proprietor served me a delicious roast beef sandwich made with her homemade sourdough, I had to get some!

I meant the bread to be a gift to a returning neighbor, but it looks like I will have to buy another. The delicious, scrumptous, my-gawd-that's-good, fresh sourdough loaf I bought has been....attacked by some diet-breaking scondrel. It must have just happened recently, as I can still smell toast in the air right now...

I'll have to follow this post up with a new thread about this re-modeled place on the Baja Highway. Estrella del Mar Cafe - kilometer 107-108 Rancho Coyote - about 16 miles south of Mulege.
