"This 25th year of tracking global wealth was one to remember. The 2011 Billionaires List breaks two records: total number of listees (1,210) and combined wealth ($4.5 trillion). This horde surpasses the gross domestic product of Germany, one of only six nations to have fewer billionaires this year. BRICs led the way: Brazil, Russia, India and China produced 108 of the 214 new names. These four nations are home to one in four members, up from one in ten five years ago. Before this year only the U.S. had ever produced more than 100 billionaires. China now has 115 and Russia 101."

Anyone need more evidence the US domination in the world has long since peaked?

AmoPescar - 3-9-2011 at 04:20 PM

I wonder if he could spare $4000 so I could buy the Jayco trailer?

I'd even let him come and visit me in Mulege!

Miguelamo :?: :bounce:

desertcpl - 3-9-2011 at 04:27 PM

I would think you would have better luck in asking him to buy Mulege

A True American Success Story

Bajahowodd - 3-9-2011 at 05:04 PM

That happened in Mexico.

And what's with the Lebanese, anyway? Salma Hayek is of Lebanese ancestry, too.

He's trying to use Volaris airlines as a write-off by (partially) reimbursing airfare when flight arrives more then 30 minutes late regardless of weather or acts of God or when luggage doesn't arrive with you.

Bob, Volaris overcharged my credit card by $257.00 last August and just last week they sent me a check that I had to pick up at the TJ airport. I was on the phone with them no less than 30 times trying to work it out! If I hear someone gets a refund for losing their bag or a delayed flight I will be impressed.

we both got a refund (credit) for return trip to TJ from PV because takeoff was delayed for over 1 hr because Calderon and his enterouge, presidential plane and 4 helicopters were at our terminal and we had to wait for boarding until they left.

It's just INSANE if you realize he is up 20+ billion in one year. 1.6 billion a month. How much is that per day?
And that over your TELCEL calls and messages you never asked for. It's crimminal if you ask me.

Woooosh - 3-10-2011 at 11:06 PM

The richest man in the world has significant financial holdings in the USA. If Bill Gates tried to buy as much in Mexico holdings as Carlos Slim has US holdings every Mexican would scream bloody hell. Yet a Mexican buys up chunks of America and no one complains that Mexico is buying the USA. strange.

bryanmckenzie - 4-5-2011 at 08:38 PM

YUP. My TelCel bill reflects that. According to my calculations $1.6B / me = ~ 10% of my monthly bill goes directly to him.

CDN$ vs. US$ (inverted since 14 Feb)

Here's a bit more ... in case you don't follow this, CDN$ vs. US$ has been inverted since Valentines day and the trend is continued CDN$ climbing. This is what I've been saying since late 2007. The currency market is where the world places its' bets on the future.

We really need to kill all of the rich people, take their money and distribute it to all of the poor people in the world, so that nobody is rich. That way, when all of that money is spent, and all of the food is gone, we can eat each other until there is only one big fat guy, like Michael Moore.

Wealth is only an illusion. Is there any way possible this man could really be happy?

There are some Nomads around who rode along with Carlos Slim and Telcel at the right time and were smart (or lucky) enough to do very well. Unfortunately I wasn't one of them.

Martyman - 4-6-2011 at 12:53 PM

Carlos has a new place at San Nicolas (south of Mulege) in Baja

Only in a corupt country could one man amass such a fortune and while so many have nothing. Does he give back? Gates gives away vast fortunes every year.

Interesting, he doesn't believe charity helps yet he gives hundreds of millions to both his and Gates foundations.

Paulina - 4-6-2011 at 09:16 PM

He built a beautiful palapa at Guillermos in Bahia. I would be forever grateful if he should decide to help build mine.

Note to C.S.; I'm only 5k south of town. Everyone knows where to find me. It would only be a sandwich, or torta to you, in the big scheme of things.

Seriously, consider it.

I actually think he was embarrased into that indirectly by Gates and Buffet. A lot of noise was made about the Gates Foundation generosity and Slim's lack of same.
Anyway, it's only pocket change for him.

If you wanted to you could name many more wealthy people and also see that Gates and Buffet are quite a different thing than Slim.

Stickers - 4-7-2011 at 06:57 PM

I wonder if Slim pays any taxes?

One investment he should make is in a huge private army to try and retake parts of Mexico that have been lost to the mob.

ElCap - 4-7-2011 at 07:45 PM

If you could look into the future you might see that Carlos Slim may play a big role in how Baja changes in the next 20 years or so. He is buying more than just beach estates, from what I have heard (there's gold in them thar hills . . )

That's the best quote EVER!:lol::lol:

He can afford a whole lot of Viagra, but would it work? He looks horrible to me.
