Once more into the breach....

In the past, I've suffered mightily for regaling the virtues of box wines but, folks, this is a wiener. My local connection at Total Wines told me they sold out the first day after an in-house tasting. At $9.99 for 3 liters, I can see why ($2.50 a bottle for you comparative lit majors).
It took me a week to get to the bottom of this box and I've gone back to stock up.
Make sure you get the Carmenere. Somewhat Merlot-like without the added shame of admitting you're actually drinking Merlot. Inexplicably has some aphrodisiac qualities for those over 60, so proceed with caution.
Even Hook will like this.

I like the granite countertops and the tile backsplash!

DanO - 3-11-2011 at 01:17 PM

Any reason you're warming it on the range?

If you hadn't blown all that money on fancy tile and kitchen appliances you could be drinking the good stuff.

Muscadine wine is a real treat and I don't usually drink wine.

Of all the varietals I've been "forced" to discover (as a result of living in Mexico and no longer being able to buy any varietal I want), Carmenere has been the most pleasant surprise.

Prior to moving here, I had only had wines blended with Carmenere. Down here, there are many 100% Carmeneres; mostly from Chile. I really like Carmenere when it's a more dense version with some tannins. Some can be less interesting than ".....*&!@#*% merlot", as Miles would say. It is somewhat similar to Merlot in taste.

Some of my recent favorites:

Chilensis
Casas del Bosque
Santa Carolina Barrica

i'd try it but Bevmo has their 5 cent sale going on now so plenty of steals on good qual cork finished stuff.

Was it Mike Humfreville or Travel Pearl who taught me how to use the empty bag inside of the box as a pillow? If assembled correctly, the box also makes for a swell hat to keep the sun out of your eyes.

Those were the good days.

P: If TP told you then SHE got it from Mike I'm betting.
Hook: Do yo think the 3 you recommend are available somewhere in Ensenada?

That's funny, I thought it an added bonus.
You know, I think you're two up on me.
It would be appropriate for you to post a photo of yourself in Amo's thread WITH that special T-shirt on. You didn't actually throw it away, did you?

Testing to see if it will handle BOLA in late August/early Sept.

I actually found Chilensis at the Costco in Hermosillo. It was a 2 fer 1 special, so I took a chance. I think it was around 150 pesos.

Probably wont find the del Bosque. My new retailer in HMO bought quite a bit of it and got a good deal on it, which he passed along. I got it for 156 pesos.

Santa Carolina is a pretty common winery at most retailers. There is a Barrica (around 220 pesos) and a Reserva (about 90 pesos).

Wine life has gotten really sweet in the last couple months. The owner of my retail wine source in HMO saw us coming in every few months and dropping some serious coin on wine. He asked if we lived in San Carlos (well, yeah, where else do 90% of the gringos live around here?). He pointed out that he delivers wine to restaurants, bars and markets in the Guaymas/ San Carlos area each week. So now, whenever we need wine I just send him an email on Tuesday and it's at my door on Wednesday. No delivery charge. This is saving me about 130 km. in each direction.

His prices are generally 10-40% off the list price of the wines. He's beating Sams and Costco and Walmart.
