Property Crime in Loreto - Boat Trailer Stolen - Epilogue

bill erhardt - 3-12-2011 at 12:38 PM

Yesterday when I returned to the ramp from fishing I found that my boat trailer left hitched to my truck less than 100 yards from the marina in Loreto had been stolen. Actually, I had been advised of this fact by my neighbor on VHF radio while fishing for yellowtail 20 miles south of town. I would say that I was the most recent victim of the property crime wave in Loreto, but with the rate of crime as it is, it is very likely that my loss, although less than 24 hours old, is not the most recent. In the past year or two there has been an explosion of property crime. Burglaries from houses both occupied and unoccupied, stolen cars and trucks, kayaks, bicycles, motors from boats, and most recently, boat trailers. Few who live here, even those who live behind walls and security fences, have not been affected in some way. It is a completely different town than when I moved here eight years ago.
Enough said of that.
I am offering a reward of $10,000 pesos for the return of the trailer. Possibly more if the thief is identified.
The trailer is a Boatmaster made to fit a new Bluewater 23T last summer. It is aluminum and "BW 23T" is stamped into the tongue a foot or two back of the hitch.
(The flip side of this story of life in Loreto is that after I was advised of the loss on the radio within an hour two Lorenatos who overheard the call had offered loaner trailers to get the my boat out of the water and home, and until I get a permanent replacement, or the original is returned. This, too, is part of life in Loreto.)
Attached is a photo of the trailer taken on the trip home with it from Florida. If you should see it, or hear of somebody trying to sell it, please contact me.

Bill,
Sorry for your loss.. Heard about this yesturday:mad:

Will get the word out about your reward being offered..
Hope these guys get caught..

mcfez - 3-12-2011 at 01:57 PM

Big bummer. Hope you get it back. Got the reward fliers in the hood(s)?

Alan - 3-12-2011 at 02:07 PM

That really sux! The last time I had my boat in Loreto someone had taken the rubber mounts that secured my trailer taillights. No damage, left the lights, just took the grommets. I assumed it was a gringo ( the local mexicans never seem too concerned about even having lights) who saw the CA plates and figured I could replace the grommets when I got home easier than he could find those grommets for his trailer in Loreto.

I just couldn't imagine what I would do if I came in to find my trailer gone and I needed to get back NOB.

bigboy - 3-12-2011 at 02:08 PM

I'll keep a lookout for the trailer in Ensenada! I always fear the same fate when I go fishing in Mexico and the states.

Just horrible!

djh - 3-12-2011 at 02:14 PM

Sorry you got hit.

I was a victim of some very ugly property crime a few years back and I was uncertain whether it was because of:

1. The huge number of non-local guys hanging around town during the Loreto Bay development "heydays"

or

2. The then-emerging meth problem,

or

3. Just some very twisted punks who were not satisfied to simply steal, they had to do such horrible vandalism, vulgar graffiti, and a few other repulsive unmentionables.

Probably a combination of at least two of the above. My ONLY relief came from the kind words of some of our Loreto friends and neighbors (and also knowing that SOMEONE(s) involved drank (I assume) nearly a quart bottle of DENATURED alcohol !!! I found the empty bottle. I have heard that would make someone VERY sick and possibly even blind or kill them ? ? ?)

I was so close to giving up in dusgust on both Loreto and Mexico. I learned alot from that, and hope never to repeat anything similar.

I wonder if perhaps some good old fashioned local vigilante "work" would take care of a few of the worst offenders . . . ? At least that's what I was wondering when I read of the motorcycle theft and fiasco in Mulege / Loreto that was posted about a month back....

Anyway, Bill.... NObody deserves that kind of crap. I hope you find your trailer and the thief.

It's great to have friends when you need them. Sorry for your loss, Bill.

BAJA.DESERT.RAT - 3-12-2011 at 02:33 PM

Hola bill erhardt,

sorry about the theft of your trailer. thank god your boat wasn't on it !!!!

may i suggest you sign onto and post on " bajaponyexpress3@gmail.com " and also on " bloodydecks.com " with a full description and pictures of the trailer including the license plate number.

both are free and have a huge audience.

the ponyex is a very good website for baja, especially baja sur.

bloody decks is a worldwide fishing website and it does include baja very much from the border to cabo and onto mainland mexico and is extremely active. lots of the different baja fishing outfitters post on it as well and it may give you a whole host of eyes watching out for you.

as people are starting to head into baja, perhaps a post on the vagabundos del mar website might be worthwhile too.

to hell with a reward....let's hope you get the trailer back unscathed and they catch the bast***s.

BIEN SALUD, DA RAT

Posters

bajaguy - 3-12-2011 at 02:54 PM

Don't forget to get posters to your local/state/federal police and any army checkpoints near you, also PEMEX stations.....let them know of the reward!!!!

monoloco - 3-12-2011 at 03:11 PM

That sucks, the sad part is the idiots will probably cut it up and sell the aluminum for scrap. A trailer like that would stick out like a sore thumb down here, I'll keep an eye out around these parts.

BornFisher - 3-12-2011 at 03:12 PM

Bill-- so sorry to hear about your trailer. Hope you get it back!
I was wondering if it was in daylight, did anyone witness anything, and how was it locked on the hitch? Thanks, that`s a shame about Loreto.

absinvestor - 3-12-2011 at 03:17 PM

Good luck. I lost a tv once and offered a reward that I posted at the local post office in Punta Banda. Got my Tv back in about 3 days. What I really wanted was the bandit to be caught and punished but he got away. Somebody knows who has your trailer and hopefully the reward will flush them out!!

UnoMas - 3-12-2011 at 03:20 PM

Maybe Someone in San Carlos and Lopez- Mateo can put out some flyers too as it is off the radar sorta,:light:
Hope you get it back, that really sucks!

Bajahowodd - 3-12-2011 at 03:58 PM

Sorry for your loss.

On one hand, crime can be found almost everywhere. On the other, the economy in the Loreto area has been in the toilet for several years.

In noting the prior post about non-locals, I would wonder just who is working on the Ensenada Blanca project.

When Cabo began to really take off, a huge number of laborers were brought in from the mainland and were living in awful conditions, at least for the first few years. Desperation breeds anti-social activity.

bajario - 3-12-2011 at 06:37 PM

My friend Jon had his two waverunners taken on with his trailer in Nopolo about two weeks ago in the night. Even had one of those locks in the tongue.

Hope you get your trailer back. I'm guessing his waverunners are in Cabo.

Loretana - 3-12-2011 at 07:40 PM

Bill,
Someone knows about this, there are always some sets of eyes around that marina, and somebody there knows who did it. I'm checking with my people down there.

I usually see your truck and trailer parked over there in front of Joe Licha's/Sandy Harrison's places right there on the malecon. (yes, Sandy is no longer with us, but I don't know the name of the new owner)

and I bet if you really push that reward you may get some information.

Buena suerte.
Diane

bill erhardt - 3-12-2011 at 08:17 PM

Desert Rat.....Thanks for the other sites.

bajaguy.....I don't have posters yet, but plan to. Because of the talk on the radio yesterday most local gringos knew about the theft before I got back to the marina. I spent a couple of hours at the marina today talking to pangueros about the theft and the reward.

monoloco.....There is only one buyer of scrap metal in town. A Mexican friend is going to check for remains of the trailer.

Bornfisher.....I had no lock on the hitch and left the rig overnight while I anchored out keeping bait alive near where I fished yesterday. For the past eight years I've left my truck/trailer near the ramp in Loreto, or near the river in Lopez Mateos countless times during 2 - 4 day trips with no problems. I was lulled into a false sense of security

Unomas......A friend in Lopez Mateos is keeping his ear to the ground in Insurgentes and Constitucion for anybody with a trailer for sale.

Loretana......I spoke to many pangueros today who are all familiar with my boat/trailer, emphasizing the no questions asked reward. If the thieves are inept enough to keep it around Loreto and in one piece somebody may well spot it.

bajacalifornian - 3-12-2011 at 08:20 PM

Really sorry Bill. Stuck in San Quintin tonight. Will work with those I know on return. See you soon.

wakemall - 3-12-2011 at 08:31 PM

Wow. I am sorry for the loss. Guess I better start locking the receiver hitch and boat trailer to the suburban.

monoloco - 3-13-2011 at 06:40 AM

It would also be good to post photos at the military check points north and south.

Pompano - 3-13-2011 at 07:38 AM

Bill, sorry about your trailer theft. Makes one really pi$$ed, I know. Boats and gear are such personal things and we all hate to lose them.

You did the right thing...rewards always help in Baja. I had a house burglar many years ago when was gone for a few days. He stole a bunch while invading my domain. Ticked me off so much I offered a ten grand usd reward..recompensa..for the guy's capture and imprisonment. The police nailed him within 10 days...he was trying to peddle my stuff in Loreto. Turned out to be a gringo career criminal from California. He lived to regret his crime in Baja. Prison life in Baja is damn harsh... what it should be in the USA.

I'll keep my eyes and ears open for any word on your trailer in the Mulege area. Good luck.

Pescador - 3-13-2011 at 05:54 PM

Pompano may have hit the nail on the head. We have had a real rash of petty crime crap in the last two months in San Bruno and one of the guys got really fed up and walked in with some cash to the local commandante at the police station. Within a day, they had a good lead and made two arrests. Turns out the guy was working with 3 guys who live on San Marcos Island and they had managed to break into about 6 houses and the easiest picking was the Gringo houses on the beach. Well, the money got the interest up and things came together really rapidly.
The other thing that you need to do is to talk to the Policia Minesterial. They are like the FBI and have much more power than the local policia. They also scare the crap out of the local punks who usually do this kind of thing. I understand that their interrogation tactics are much stronger than the local police and they usually get to the bottom of things very quickly.
Sure hope it turns up and we will keep a good lookout in our neck of the woods as well.

And you paid ten grand to the policia municipal in Mulege after this?

Phil S - 3-13-2011 at 07:53 PM

Sorry about your loss. Having lived in the winters in Loreto/Puerto Esc. & Nopolo for over twenty years, theft was a common occurance. Theft of a boat trailer is quite brazen. Posting at the two nearest military stops is a great idea. And a sizeable reward for the return of the trailer even without conviction would be good news. conviction would be the icing on the cake.
Hoping it turns up very soon

BajaBlanca - 3-14-2011 at 08:36 AM

sad indeed. sorry fro your loss and hoping you get the trailer and the culprits.

No. Every law enforcement official from TJ to Cabo was looking. The federal police, etc. The money went to the Municipality of Mulege authorities, which covers a very large area....not just the village of Mulege..and to Loreto officials after the recovery of a very expensive movie camera and arrest of the perp.

Note: Posting a reward paid only in Mulege would greatly narrow the field...much as the general reward offered by Bill can be earned peninsula-wide. Fight crime by fighting back.

I was thinking about this....

I never would had considered someone stealing my trailer while I was out fishing. That would be pure hell to deal with.

Here's what I am bout to order in a few minutes. Just wanted to share this with others here that may not have thought of this lock.

Well...I guess you could get a set of those special-socket lugs at Pep Boys. I think they come in a set of four. Put two on each side.
It's just another deterrent.

With no boat on the trailer, and all the dirt roads around, You could just skid that wheel to where you are going to work on it.

bajacalifornian - 3-14-2011 at 05:50 PM

I like your thinking soulpatch.

Phil S - 3-14-2011 at 06:28 PM

Tire boot is a great idea, except when they remove the tire & wheel, and put your spare that was attached to the trailer on it.

Insurance isn't a deterrent, but it helps.

Diver - 3-15-2011 at 08:16 AM

I use a locking hitch pin and a padlock on the receiver/ball.
For even more security you can buy lockable ball guards.
Then you just have to make sure they can't take the truck !

I'm hoping you'll find it in one piece.

My trailer was insured against theft if attached to my truck, which mine was when it was stolen, by a policy I bought through Lewis and Lewis. An adjuster was by this morning to commence action on my claim. As is the case with many, I have been buying insurance for years for various types of coverage while rarely filing a claim. It will be interesting how L&L/Qualitas responds to this one, and I will report back here.

That's good news. Hope it works out, Bill. I think the insurance companies down here are becoming more professional all the time and should treat you well. Best of luck.

fishabductor - 3-19-2011 at 10:08 PM

I drove the entire length of baja today and yesterday and kept my eyes peeled for your trailer...any aluminum trailer. i thought i saw it at CCD attached to a white chevy...but it turned out to be steel:(

I hope the a-holes cut their weewee's off when they are cutting it up for meth money.

bajajurel - 4-3-2011 at 09:19 PM

What a bummer Bill. I can't imagine the feeling. I wish you the best in recovering it. As you are so well known it is surprising that they would target you but stranger things have happened. Wish I could help some way. If you need anything done up here in San Diego let me know.

grizzlyfsh95 - 4-5-2011 at 11:23 AM

I met you in Mateos a couple of years ago. I will keep an eye out in the East Cape. Hard to miss a trailer like that. That Mulege-Loreto corridor seems to be a high crime area. We are having some problems with panga thefts down here in both Los Barriles and LaRibera

bill erhardt - 10-7-2011 at 11:03 AM

Last week I received a check from Qualitas for payment in full of the claim for the stolen trailer. A couple of months ago after four or five months of unreturned email messages and phone calls, requests for superfluous information about the loss, and general foot dragging I contacted Jim Lewis (Lewis & Lewis Ins.) to see if he could light a fire under Qualitas. Jim sent a two line inquiry on my behalf. It may or may not be a coincidence, but shortly after Jim's inquiry Qualitas advised me that payment had been approved and six and a half months after the claim was filed their check has cleared my bank.

In the meantime the beat goes on in Loreto. In two different thefts from my boat while parked in my driveway this summer I lost the batteries, three radios and a satellite telephone. In a third theft the battery was also stolen from the boat of friends who left it with me while in the States.

Last Sunday the lock was cut off the gate of two other friends who are due back from Idaho next week. The outboard motor was stolen from their boat, bars were removed from a window of their trailer, and the trailer was rifled.

The night before last the door of my neighbor's palapa was broken in with a makeshift battering ram and his palapa and trailer were tossed. Bolt cutters were used on a padlock securing his bodega.

Last month my housekeeper's sister, who lives in Colonia Zaragosa, was taking a shower in the middle of the day when her house was burglarized and appliances and furniture stolen.

It is getting more and more expensive to live in Loreto. Everyone, Mexican and foreign alike, who has anything that might strike the fancy of bandidos is taking steps to secure it. Many are hiring guards to stay at their property while they are away.

Very sad commentary Bill.

Doesn't sound like the new Mayor is doing much to improve the quality of life down there, or is a Mayor powerless to make a difference?

At what point do we collectively agree that respect for private property in Baja has changed for the worse, I suppose mostly due to economic conditions? never?

The boat tour operators are saying they have zero business in Isla Mujeres, Q Roo. Maybe they don't like "gringos" having boats that "take" their business?

Sorry to hear about your loss Bill.

The same things started happening after the building of the then presidente Hotel at nopolo back in the late 70's/
Hope you find it soon.

It use to be that you could hire a Mexicano like Rodgrigo to watch your things when you were away from Home.
Look around, maybe ask Alvaro if he knows someone who will Baby Set your trailer when you go out of Loreto.
Also you can look into Eletricfying your boat that will at least give them a Shock they want forget.

Is Col. Zaragosa a neighborhood of Loreto, or was this in the small town North of Insurgentes that's named "Zaragosa" ?

Si, Col. Zaragosa is a neighborhood of Loreto.
Not to be confused with the town of Zaragosa North of Insurgentes.

BajaBlanca - 10-10-2011 at 08:44 PM

This is really terrible...to see a neighborhood change so quickly right in front of your eyes is horrible. I can't imagine being at home and being burglarized ... scary stuff.

The good news is that insurance came through for you ...

Loretana - 10-10-2011 at 10:38 PM

The pilfering and small time theft has always been part of the Loreto scene, at least as long as I've been down here.

But now the thieves are getting bolder, more desperate, and the lack of police presence and enforcement is unfortunate. The patrol cops have told me there is no money for gas to send officers out on watch.

I've even had my light bulbs stolen from the outdoor fixtures, not to mention two nice bikes taken from inside my property wall in broad daylight. A sign of the times.

I'm learning to keep stuff chained up and locked down, and my dog out in the perimeter on duty. I just ordered a DSC Home Security Package with lots of motion sensors and giant siren. Hopefully, we can keep the thieving bums at bay!

fish101 - 10-11-2011 at 05:54 AM

One of your neighbors (Loretana) woke up last Friday morning around 4 AM and caught a thief coming up his stairs..Scared both of them I guess..It was Roger, just down the street from you..Gary asked me to drive by his place once in a while, so will make the loop and check on yours as well. It is really getting out of hand lately. The police are patrolling more and during the night as well, but of course there are not many of them on duty at one time..They did catch a thief in my neighbor's yard two weeks ago and he has a light on in his yard at night, but it still doesnt stop them. They know when you leave and for how long..someone is watching us every minute down here..Lets face it, the Mexicans don't want us here any longer and it shows every day...

Howard - 10-11-2011 at 06:05 AM

What happened to the thief that they caught?

bajabass - 10-11-2011 at 06:11 AM

Hi fish, welcome to Baja Nomads! Do you really think most of the locals in Loreto want the gringos, Canadians, ect., to leave in a mass exodus???? I sure hope not! That sleepy little town would be in permanent hibernation after that!!!!

Bill, really sorry for your very traumatic and time consuming loss. Nothing like drawing the pain out for a long time:no::fire:
I've read this thread since the beginning, and hope I never have to deal with a similar situation. I use a sturdy padlock to secure my trailer to the truck while I'm out, but a big hammer or some boltcutters, and adios.

Welcome, fish.... Easy on those broad stroke generalizations... I have quite a few good Mexican friends in Loreto.... A few who are quite generous in helping us with our challenges... And a few who have ALSO been victims of crime... (theft, vandalism...). There are bad actors everywhere, and there are kind, honorable folks as well (which I believe most of Loreto's people to be.

Some might remember a few years back when my HR TT was broken into and vandalized (lots of graffiti... Yuk)... It was during the Loreto Bay "boom"(faux, eh?...). My elderly Mexican neighbor Maria was also broken into, and lost MUCH more than I did... Her son-in-law and I commiserated and worked together to clean up, close up, and find what we could of the scattered valuables, etc. It gave us both more empathy, understanding, and solidarity against this type of crap.
