I know it is possible, but has anyone taken a bicycle
on a Mex long distance bus? Do you break it down
a bit, handlebars, wheels, etc.?
thanks for your time

I've taken my bike on Mexican buses a few times. I used a bike bag made for transporting them on airlines and broke the bike down to fit it and then asked the drivers/loaders to please handle it somewhat gently and never had any problems.

A problem I could see happening without a bike bag would be getting peoples' luggage dirty with oil from chain and gearing

For ABC bus in Baja
remove both wheels
load bike on driver side of bus
insert bike upside down
make sure wheels are standing, leaning on bike
use your cable lock through both wheels and bus frame supports
if no lock use a bungee cord to keep bike frame, wheels upright
set your bags against your wheels
bike theft from bus does happen, not a lot
if you like, just lay your bike in the possum belly
on a long ride things will be piled on top of your bike
well worth the three minutes to stand the bike
