It is just north of the arroyo crossing on Hwy. 1 about 2 miles north of Cataviņa. A wide road drops to the east side of the highway and down into the sandy arroyo at the base of the boulder hill.

Here are all my trips to the Cataviņa painted cave, in them are GPS and photos from below the boulder hill you must climb up. The cave is at the very top, across the arroyo from Hwy. 1:

If you are going north towards El Rosario, the parking area is just after you cross the arroyo (that sometimes has water in it) and go up the other side... It will be the first turnoff to your right. There used to be a building there.

The side road goes down to the arroyo... park... walk across the arroyo to the boulder hill... and climb up to the top. There is/ was a sign at the top by the cave that you could see from the highway. Photo of the hill in the last link (2006 trip) with Josh in it.

I saw the photo and will try to find it again ! thanks so much. when you say there was a building, is it where the "museum" used to be or another one ?

As you approach the direction of the cave, look for the INAH sign that is posted outside the cave. This sign can actually be seen from the highway. (The sign says, roughly, respect your heritage ...).

The sign is up on top of the rock hill, across the arroyo from the highway... way over and up there. The cave is right behind the sign, actually a boulder room more than a cave. This hill is above the junction of two arroyos that meet before crossing Hwy. 1 (the big dip with water sometimes in it, about 2 miles north of Cataviņa). Let me know if you need some Google Earth images of it!

Las Pintas Petroglyphs

David, David, David........

If its painted it is a pictograph, if its scratched or pecked it is a petroglyph.

I just found my notes on the kilometer marker by the Cataviņa painted cave turnoff... it is Km. 176

Cataviņa is at Km. 179
