Security devise against breakins

A thought to share. I've always wondered if anyone has ever installed 'shutters' on windows on hinges. When your home. They are flat against the exterior wall. When your gone, they are folded over the window. You then take rebar, bend it into a u shape on each end,(distance will depend upon the width of your windows. You will need an electric drill. You will drill on each shutter an upper hole & a lower hole. (You will need to drill through the exterior wall) You will insert the rebar into the left & right holes. You will need a threading device to put threads on the interior portion of the rebar. You will need washers and wing nuts.
I saw this done on a summer cabin and was also used over the doors, but only way that would work would be having a crawl space in the floor, and secured somehow that would be fool proof. Sounds simple???? Anyone used this device for your home? Minus the "crawl area" as Baja homes are cement slabs. How would it work for doors, as you need to be inside to secure it?????

Fairly common down here to put bars over the windows and doors. As you pointed out the big trick is leaving a place to get into the place yourself. I have done the same but my innovation on the main door was to bolt it using special tamper proof bolts that need a special wrench to turn them, similar to locking lug nuts on a car with expensive wheels. Nothing is perfect, all we can do is try tjo make our places harder to get into than our neighbors, so the banditos will go there.

Yes...I put shutters on our home.....but not for security....to keep the sun from beaming into the house, and to protect the glass from breakage. Works great.

For security....I doubt shutters will do anything. A handy crowbar does wonders.......

Window bars. I be afraid of a interior fire...with me roasting like a stuff pig in there. One just coundn't get out.

Motion light sensors and bells/sirens might be your best bet....

If they want in...they'll get in. We dont keep anything of value in our vacation house down there. Our place is simple.....so we dont have to worry about these sort of issues.

We have very little in our house of great value. When we are there we have security that barks. Nancy

Barking security is good, barking and biting security is better!!

I have a Rhodesian Rhidgeback that is police dog trained, as well as the latest addition...a Fila Brasiliero/ Dogo Argentino...probably the gnarliest mix on the planet. Both breeds are banned in many countries. In fact the Fila is one of the only breeds that gets points if it bites or attempts to bite a judge at a dog show.

Step one:

"dont keep anything of value"

that was a big one for me, when we came down... I like to play the guitar... and bring any of my kids down was of concern... as everything else wasn't worth that much ... not really..

We shared and bought folks food and drink when down... invited locals and their children and dogs to our house ... they all saw what we had, used to let the kids play my guitar... on a little Gibson amp... I brought down too ...

The kids had a blast.. and everyone knew I had musical instruments and electronics for same... even the folks at the music shop in Rosarito ...

including copper wiring and plumbing...they have been breaking into houses and stripping out the electrical/plumbing systems. What a mess that would be.

If someone has a few minutes by themselves they can get in anywhere. Run a vehicle into door, house wall etc. connect chain to bars on windows other end to vehicle.

Good neighbors, friends in area, and year around neighbors, and good relations with the full time campo manager, owner. Most effective ways I know of.

A tweaker (meth addict) with a big sledge hammer can go through a block wall in no time.

I second that!
We have a frig, table, sleep mats. cheap shelves for our cheap wares (!) in our house. No TV...nothing. I dont worry about break ins while we are not there :)

But again...we do spent much of out time traveling or just plain ol outside when we are there.
