RV Caravan's need to go!!

I saw a caravan today between ccd and loreto that was 20 strong and stretched about a mile long...WTF? Do you people have any idea how many people you pee off and slow down? Didn't effect me as I was heading south, but the locals stuck behind you didn't appear all too pleased.

If you must caravan, please be courteous to others and leave space between you so traffic going the speed limit or over can pass.

Think of this of it as a fish ladder, where regular traffic can jump from spot to spot to clear the obstacle. The way you guys were rolling up hiway 1 it would be the equivelent to a salmon trying to jump Niagra falls!!!

I bet the lead was DENNIS. Was there a bike mangled on the front bumper? I have been wondering why Chrisx has been so quiet

I was thinking about Dennis/chrisx when I passed several bikers south of GN.

Monoloco...did the soldiers visit pescadro too and go through the homes looking for drugs/guns? They did out here on the eastcape, they had a electric sniffer and about 40 soldiers.

no notices...just searches. The didn't enter the home but they spent an hour walking around with the sniffer thingy. They went to a bunch of places out here.

I was up in the states when it happened.

Nobody gets more upset than I about a long caravan that does not share the road with others.

With that being said, do we not all complain how slow things are in Baja and we want more money to be spent so the economy can get better?

I would assume that the majority of people in a caravan are first timers. Lets assume that at least 1/2 of those people liked Baja and plan to return. They will tell their friends, etc., etc.

I for one would like that the wagon masters make sure that there caravan is respecting the rights of other vehicles and then we have a win-win situation.

Besides, when it gets down to it, what the damn hurry? Isn’t it why were down here? (But it still peees me off so I must try and get rid of the hustle, bustle mentality but it’s so damn hard to do so!)

Living the Baja Life, choosing my pace to enjoy the scenery is what it's all about. I can get impatient, however, when others in a caravan are choosing my pace for me. When it gets too overbearing, I'll pull off the road for a cold beer....or two.

I think the electric sniffer is the thing iflyfish got busted with for smuggling bacon across the border with. I didn't see it, but they walked around sniffing for drugs/guns with it. I just did a quick search and they say this device will put drug dogs out of a job!

Caravans and large groups in general

As we all share the joy of Baja, and the road, I don't mind caravans. I am also sympathetic to the fact that there are not adequate highway pull-outs. However, I enthusiastically concur with the recommendation for more spacing between individual vehicles within the whole group, and maybe break the group up further into sub-groups.

We were in Baja five weeks, and just returned home a week ago. We drove behind one of two Canadian caravans as they were heading into Los Barriles. We couldn't see the entire line of vehicles, but it was an estimated 10 to 15 large rigs. It took over an hour to drive ten miles from Las Cuevas to Los Barriles following the line of vehicles up the highway, and waiting for the local police to direct traffic on and off of Hwy 1 into and through the town of Los Barriles.

Beyond the highway use, much of Baja's infrastructure and local businesses can be overwhelmed by any large group. On more than one occasion over the last 20 years, we have been "scooped" by large special interest groups on camping, food at restaurants, cash at the ATM, and in the old days, fuel.

Enjoying the Baja in smaller groups (all groups), more widely spaced in space and time, may have a lighter impact on people, facilities, and the environment.

Personally, I have no problem with these caravans, as long as I don't end up behind on in the high country. :rolleyes:

Amazing, as their website notes, they will take up to 15 rigs at a time. And for just $1495 for a month's tour, they throw complimentary margarita parties.

I kid. Not my cup of tea. But, apparently Barry & Vanda make a living from these folks.

Is there a limit on the margaritas? There are enough pro drinkers around to bankrupt them...for $1495 that is only about 300 margaritas at $5 ea.

I think multi RV caravans are a major safety hazard not unlike cyclist traveling along Hwy 1. They risk every ones lives as impatient locals and vehicles that travel the highway for a living try and get around them. They should be seriously held accountable for any accidents they cause.

15 rigs at a time. And for just $1495 for a month's tour
