After a steady diet of yellowtail for a couple of months I was lured offshore yesterday by persistent reports of billfish in the canyon. In six hours
of trolling east of Isla Catalana in glassy water where a tail would have been visible for half a mile I saw no sign of marlin, but did find some
early dorado willing to bite on marlin feathers in 68 degree water. Although not big enough to be keepers in July, some were bigger than the peanuts
that usually swarm up the canyon in April, and I brought home a couple of 12 - 15 pounders for friends with a taste for some early season mahi.

There were several pods of frisky pilot whales in the area.

Thanks, Chris. May is a good rule of thumb for sails out of Loreto. Usually schoolie dorado and a few stripers show up outside by mid-April, and by
May the dorado are bigger and sailfish have joined the party. Seaweed paddies usually don't develop, if they do develop, until June or July so it is
necessary to burn some gas and troll for the early dorado. Local pangueros don't troll, as a general rule, and usually fish for yellowtail until
