Quake in Coyote Bay

Pompano - 3-23-2011 at 07:11 PM

Sitting here at my desk in Coyote Bay.

We just had 3 quick tremors in the last few minutes.

Cedric the Beach b-tch is howling.

Pompano is howling.

Small aftershock and all done now. Move along, nothing to see, move along.

akmaxx - 3-23-2011 at 07:12 PM

Thought that might have gotten a little worse. Japan jumpy I guess.

There was a thread on here about a west coast quake this week. I was a predictor skeptic, butttttttt.........

krafty - 3-23-2011 at 07:13 PM

hang tight!

Well I guess we can all just live the quake via Pompano's pictures. You got pics, right? ;P

Phil S - 3-23-2011 at 07:14 PM

Better secure the booze cabinet!!!!

mulegemichael - 3-23-2011 at 07:19 PM

roz said she saw the curtains move...i was talking at the time so didn't notice. ...how selfish of me!...i can be that way!!!

ecomujeres - 3-23-2011 at 07:21 PM

Coming from the San Francisco Bay Area, I´m used to the sound of a truck hitting the side of a building before the rattle or jolt.

So it took me a bit of time to figure out why all the windows in the house were rattling and picking up speed. Then about 5 seconds later, it stopped, only to do it again. That´s when I jumped off the couch and ran out of the house!

Stood around a few minutes outside with my partner and the cat. She´s nuts (the cat, that is), so who knows if she was rattled by it.

We both walked back inside, only to encounter the windows rattling again. Back outside...

All is cool now.

Pompano - 3-23-2011 at 07:21 PM

Phil S...I did lose one bottle of Jack Daniels..just not to sure when that was, though...

woody with a view - 3-23-2011 at 07:22 PM

the end is near!

mulegemichael - 3-23-2011 at 07:22 PM

pomp's pics from him flat on his back right now...the quake pretty much put him down...so lots of photos of ceilings for awhile...he is so resilient so he'll be back..i promise you.

mulege marv - 3-23-2011 at 07:26 PM

where did it start

It started in the Earth, I'm guessing.

akmaxx - 3-23-2011 at 07:30 PM

Just kidding. I looked at the USGS earthquake center but it hasn't updated yet.

mulegemichael - 3-23-2011 at 07:30 PM

right up here in #45...roz dropped the blender on the tile and it exploded!...i've never seen such.. an explosion!...i took a chunk of glass in the eye and had to be flown out in a chopper......i'll get back to you tomorrow about the ceviche..m.

Pompano - 3-23-2011 at 07:35 PM

In the past seven days, there have been 53 earthquakes of at least 5.0-magnitude around the world, according to the US Geological Survey.

Of those, 28 struck near Japan.

MAMMOTH earthquakes tend to strike across the world in a cluster but scientists do not know why.

This one was a puppy.....so far.

LaTijereta - 3-23-2011 at 07:49 PM

All calm down in Loreto..
I was working in the shop out in the garage around that time.

landyacht318 - 3-23-2011 at 08:40 PM

According to the USGS.

There was no earthquake, and you are all insane.

Interesting that there is such a delay in the USGS reporting of earthquakes in the SOC.

Just a thought: does anyone if the Sea of Cortez is capable of a tsunami or is it not "wide" enough...certainly is deep enough. And I guess if it COULD cause one, you'd have about...oh...say...ten seconds to get to higher ground?

The linked page also shows there was a 3.9 in just about the same spot on Saturday 3/19 as well.

Bob and Susan - 3-24-2011 at 05:55 AM

Hmmm....We had 3 separate shakers here in Coyote Bay..rattled us good.. and all of my neighbors windows, too. A few of us went outside to inspect any damage. I think I got a fresh crack in my firepit.

David K - 3-24-2011 at 07:58 AM

Bob, go to the top of your lighthouse and see if you feel them up there.;D

Phil S - 3-24-2011 at 08:21 AM

Pompano. What do you use your discarded Jack Daniels bottles for when empty. Wind Chimes? Storing shells collected from the beach? Target practice with sling shots? (no guns allowed. Right?) ????? Do you need a replacement?????/ lol\ Should we bring one down when we come through next trip???? Or would you settle for a The Singleton Single Malt Scotch?? Not quite as good as Glen(whatever) but then for an $80.00 scotch it should be good (Glenwhatever) Ever dip your bait in Jack Daniels before casting out?

toneart - 3-24-2011 at 08:50 AM

I felt one last night, about 1 or 2 in the morning. It only lasted about 5 seconds. Not a big one.

Phil..I confess that it's time to put to rest this idea that I drink a lot of booze. I'm actually a tee-totaler, as anyone in Mulege can tell you.

But for the sake of Nomad's adoration to the stuff, I have in the past presented a personna of being an imbiber.. nothing could be farther from the truth. So help me G...

From an earlier thread

Tsunamis are cause by large, quick displacements of water. The fault running up the center is a sliding fault, not a subduction fault, so a Tsunami formed in the SOC would have to be caused by an underwater landslide.

Pacific plate very active right now. Hang in there!

mulegemichael - 3-24-2011 at 07:02 PM

i was on the couch watching the recently fun clips on cnn regarding libya...gosh, that looks like fun over there!...fab vacation!...anyway, roz is adjusting the drapes or something in the same room, and she suddenly turns around and goes, "look, look, the tv is jumping around"...i didn't feel ONE thing...not one thing...what goes first?...i'm scared.

BajaRat - 3-24-2011 at 07:10 PM

Its quite possible that the plate will be moving more frequently during the near future.

I use the USGS near real-time Google Earth KMZ (on my desktop) to check daily in 3-D.

Here's a screen snapshot this morning. Right where's supposed to be on the fault line (jagged line), closer to Santa Rosalia than Mulege.

Very nice!:light:

bryanmckenzie - 3-25-2011 at 01:33 PM

Thanks, David. Here's another.
All quakes, North America, during past 7 days, continually updated.
Color denotes age (0-7 days).
Size denotes magnitude (1-6 or greater)
Tectonic plates are shown. You can see that movement at one location COULD clearly affect another location.
Note plate movement speed & direction.
If you do the math, Bahia de los Angeles will be a suburb of Las Vegas in exactly 42,187,501 years.
That will be a great time to sell your BOLA real estate.
I haven't yet worked out the price escalation based on inflation.

Interesting Brian - thanks.

There is a seismic station N of San Felipe in the hill El Chinaro near the intersection of Hghy 5 and 3.
