How's the water over there on Talk Baja?

I sure hope I'm not one of the problem newby's.

That's really a damn shame. Why not turbocharge your delete key and allow those of us who enjoy your posts to continue doing so? "Illegitimi non est carborundum," or something.

LancairDriver - 3-28-2011 at 07:10 PM

Pompano, I sincerely hope you will reconsider. Unfortunately there are a number of lowlifes butting in on the forum who have made a lifetime mission of being negative as they have nothing else in life going for them. Your posts are by far the most informative and entertaining on the board. Many of us unable to spend as much time in Baja as we would like and get our daily exposure to Baja through your excellent posts will miss your input. The forum will not be the same.

Bob H - 3-28-2011 at 07:10 PM

Roger, you have GOT to be kidding here! A newbie would never get under your skin.

Sometimes, some things that are posted hurt the heart.

The Internet does not have a culture of etiquette.

Not that I know anything about that.

It is getting rough in here lately. Lurking is safe and peaceful- but contributes nothing to the discussion. I've been stung recently as well but it seems newbies with abrasive agendas eventually trip over the threads they fray.

Noobs with attitude don't stand a chance here. We eat them alive. That's why I don't understand what Roger is going through. I think it's something else and we should leave him alone for a while.
Not forever. We won't tolerate his unexplained departure.

the worst is the old posters (old, as opposed to newby) that think their post count equals seniority and wisdom and allows them to cop an attitude toward newbies.

Roger. I for one will miss your great photos. Also your diverse interests, and profound love of mankind. It hurts me to think that someone here on this forum (the greatest form of communication of Baja I might add) Heal, and come back as the "new Pompano" Look forward to your next communication.
And may the 'bad person" get his/hers in the end!!!!!!!!

soulpatch - 3-28-2011 at 09:08 PM

That's a shame.
Roger didn't strike me as the type.......but, then again, I only know the side of him he shows us here.
Well, his posts took a lot of work and maybe he's just tired of it.
I think a lot of us come and go and re-think things....it's the human condition.
Granted, there are some serious buttcracks that post but I can't imagine caring that deeply what their opinions are.

BajaGringo - 3-28-2011 at 09:16 PM

Pompano?:o Your humor, wisdom, advice, pictures, etc. gone from the forum? Hope not! You must have had a reeeel bad day. Never thought any newbie or oldie would cause you to step aside. This must be one of your jokes. I'm waiting for the punchline.

Sorry..bad word choice.

Pompano - 3-29-2011 at 06:18 AM

Sorry..my bad, folks.

I mistakenly gave you the wrong idea....through my bad choice of a term. I meant 'newbees' in another context...as in 'new to Baja' newbees. Not the newbee commonly used on Nomads to refer to a new poster.

I am going offline and my life will become more private due to personal matters. I have lost something dear to my heart and it has nothing to do with this forum or any BajaNomads. It's more of a loss of a certain Baja feeling…like a life-long love affair...and a realization that times will never be like they once were...nor will the newbee-strangers be the same as us Old Farts de Baja.

This loss I brought about myself, so don't waste any sorrows on my account. I sometimes put the whole leg down my throat...along with too much demon-rum! Not to worry, I will handle it...along with apologies to the appropriate parties.

Hah…I do get myself into the damnedest situations! Like my compadre, Randy, often reminds me, “Roger, I know you well, but I love you anyway.” Thankfully, I am blessed with true friends…and the love of a good woman.

These nostalgia events are inevitable in most situations, I suppose, and doubly so if you are active in life. For me, it's time to step aside and reflect a bit, then move on.

Like Carl Sandburg said.."The past is but a bucket of ashes, so live not in your yesterdays."

Thanks for all the kind words. I've always enjoyed posting here.

In the meantime, just take a vacation from Baja instead of to Baja... Baja will win you back as it has everyone who has spent any time there. Your contributions here are very valuable to so many and improve the quality of the Baja experience to us all!

While you might take a break from Baja, please don't take a long break from Baja Nomad!

See you down the highway amigo!

Life always takes unexpected turns and it's good to take time and reflect. I always find after I have finished my assessment I can vigorously pursue my new path. I hope yours leads you back to Baja and the family you have created with all of us.
Keep your powder dry and a bend in your rod.

Pompano, thanks for all you great posts sharing your stories and travels. On our honeymoon in 1999 you cruised by our camp at Coyote and we chatted. You invited us over to your casa for some adult beverages but we were already two days late returning home and did not make it over. Always regretted the chance to talk story. Take care and best of luck to you in the future.

I don't drink anymore..but obviously did enough damage as a youth...as I posted this in the wrong thread. It was supposed to go on Santiago's "nailed in Baja" thread. How it got here I have no idea.

I drank enough until I went to sleep that night, but not enough that I slept in the bathroom...thank god those days are behind me.

Roger, I have loved your posts, your photos, your sage advice and your wonderful stories and great sense of humor. You helped me get my water color of your avitar through your sister. All I can hear is Paul Simon's "Graceland" >> "She comes back to tell me she's gone". I think he'll be back, again and again to tell us he's leaving.

I don't really know the guy because after the first year or so I learned to tune him out because of zillions of pictures of him at age 14 catching muskie in the frozen north. Everyone else seemed to be following the rules about "Baja Subjects".

He needs a lot of help. God bless him.

It's a shame you couldn't have contributed even a fraction of the enjoyment he has provided Nomads through his pictures and comments. If you were to go away I'm sure you wouldn't be missed. The man has done more to promote Baja and particularly Mulege than you could accomplish in a lifetime with your sarcastic comments. The evidence is in the number of supportive posts that keep coming in.

Thanks, Igor. I was about to say that George (whose tongue was likely planted firmly in cheek) would definitely be missed, at least by me. Same goes for Roger, whom I've never had the privilege to meet, as well as a number of other posters here. Seems like there's a lot of room under the bus today.

Pacoderm, Wow, that's going back quite a few years. How long, I don't know. I'm going to have to do a search now.

Pomp, you'll be back. Let's just call it a sabbatical, or maybe an approved leave of absence.

All the best,

I had a dream. I had a dream that Roger told me he would, in time, return to the Nomad board to share his experiences.
"But," he said, "I won't if I have to see one more slobbering, embarrasing, pleading testimonial from the Rank and File. It's a new day. Today is a new day and we have to move on."

Yep....That's what he said. That's exactly what Roger said. He said that.

I think we should honor his last wish here.

"Tell General Howard I know his heart. What he told me before I have in my heart. I am tired of the trolling. Our chiefs are trolled. Looking Glass is trolled. It is the young men who say yes or no. He who led the young men is trolled. It is cold and we have no Wi-Fi. The little children are without laptops. My people, some of them have run away to the hills and have no laptop, no wi-fi; no one knows where they are -- perhaps they are without power. I want to have time to look for my children and see how many I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the trolled. Hear me my chiefs. I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, "I shall post no more forever."

Complete insanity has finally resettled in here and life is, once again, good. I can resume my normal posting position, one hand on the keyboard, the other slid down the front of my pants like Al Bundy watching TV.
We all have our heroes.

Perfection

And who has not.... or when not intoxicated.... throw the first stone...

Don't know about you, I go back and look at all his posts with the pictures, along with Ken and a lot of others "pictures" ... for me ... its an escape into Baja ... or a loop through the entire United States in a motor home... something I will NEVER be able to do... or do a strafing run about 10' off the deck.. et al...

Too many great things posted already... however, must say I will really miss the wealth of great times this man, I don't even know... shares... with us all...

Its too bad the "bell shaped" curve exists... as one extreme.. seems to have, overtime .... just gotten old to someone...

Thanks for all.. and its all good... :):)

Pretty good Bwana.

You ommited the part "My people are tired of eating mice and juniper berries". Or something to that effect.
