Pemex is a bargain...but, then again, so is Baja!

Ken Cooke - 3-28-2011 at 08:00 PM

I just received this info from Carol of Discover Baja:
Gas prices are: $2.87 for magna---$3.24 for premium --- $3.00 for diesel.

Prices here in Riverside are hovering around $4.05/gallon Unleaded 87 Octane...:o

for a total price per gallon of

so it is even better than you think

I just drove down in a new truck and the highest I paid was $4.12 in O'side. The new-to-me truck got 14-15mpg.

$2.31 was very welcome...it was good to get back home.

In San Felipe magna is 8.77 per liter - where are you finding it under 7 pesos a liter?

Leo - 3-28-2011 at 08:54 PM

the price is 8.77 pesos per liter and you are lucky if you are not ripped off 10% of the volume. So what is the saving?

I just pulled out my facturas dated 18/3/2011 and 19/3/2011.

I paid $7.86450/liter in los barriles, guerrero negro, el rosario(baja cactus), cuidad constitucion and ensenada.

(7.86450x 3.8)/11.5= $2.598 or $2.60/gal

Are the facturas before IVA?

Somebody please tell me where I can stay in the United States for 3 nights (for the price of 2), order 2 breakfasts for $6 (Huevos Rancheros w/warm tortillas), and park at the beach for free???

I rest my case...

I was just trying to make it even more tempting with $2.31 gas.

The states are so expensive...after living in baja for a long time you get sticker shock on returning to the states. O'k some things are cheaper NOB, but not everything.

I don't think anything is cheaper NOB. Plus, the people of Baja are friendly, my wife and I speak Spanish so no language barrier, lots of Mexican food, cheap gasoline, 'Economy' and 'Budget' aren't dirty words, etc. (okay, 'Barato' y 'Bajo precio')..

offroad parts sure are.

bilstein 5160's are $300/ea here, in the states they are $150/ea. Tires are cheaper here, due to mounting/balancing.

hope all is well with you and your beautiful wife Ken.

Let us not forget the price of Propane is half of what it is in the states.

how about electronics, automobiles, clothes, many groceries, etc.?
many consumer goods are much less expensive in US relative to Mexico. that is why so many Mexicans shop here in US.
i also note that the average wage in US appears to be relatively better than mexico: the average joe six pack gringo has higher standard of living and can afford more luxuries than the average joe six pack mexican.

re your original topic, price of gasoline is peanuts in the face of life's other costs. your obsession with fuel costs is short sighted and silly. if you are so sensitive to fuel cost, why did you buy a gas guzzler in first place?

ken:
re fuel pricing, you are loving the difference between socialism and free market economy.
you must be a socialist, eh?

woody with a view - 3-29-2011 at 05:46 AM

paid $28 for 10 gallons when i topped of in ensenada a week ago. they even gave me dollars back in change, which was like a winning lotto ticket, sorta!

Woooosh - 3-29-2011 at 08:32 AM

We're getting pretty comfortable with the peso hovering around 12:1 for so long. It would seem the usual fluctuations have flattened out. So long as this excahnge rate holds, Baja is a bargain.

Ken Cooke - 3-29-2011 at 06:24 PM

In San Felipe, Leidys and I stayed at Hotel Diamante for 3 nights - we only were charged $29/night for 2 nights. The closest I have stayed in a hotel of that calibre was in Colombia a few yrs ago.

We're both hyped about going back to San Felipe where the weather is warm and we can relax and have our family vacation for less descretionary dollars than we could afford here in the US.

As for gasoline, that all figures into the vacation equation as cost. The Honda Pilot I drive 90% of the time barely gets better mileage (city) vs. the Jeep, but with front wheel drive (2wd), the Jeep is the only way I roll in Baja!

Cyanide41 - 3-29-2011 at 06:34 PM

In Tijuana the Magna is $9/liter. In Ensenada last Saturday it was $8.6

Bajaboy - 3-29-2011 at 07:36 PM

In all fairness, you should include the cost of Mex insurance, tourist permits, etc. We camp out in Anza Borrego all the time and don't pay a dime. Both places have their merits.

CDB - 3-29-2011 at 07:49 PM

Finding a place where you want to live is like finding a mate. The goal is to find one who's faults you can live with.

Camping on the beach vs. camping in a canyon -- I hear you, but Baja is worth the extra travel $$.

Cantamar is Seven Pesos Cheaper Per Liter

Gypsy Jan - 3-29-2011 at 08:26 PM

Than Tijuana or Rosarito.

Ensenada is not very much cheaper, according to our gasolinero in Cantamar today.

Thanks for the information! David K always said that the gasoline from the AM/PM south along Hwy 1 was where the cheaper prices began...

David K - 3-31-2011 at 08:23 PM

The border zone for Pemex dealers was 20 km (I thought) or 12.4 miles. Rosarito South (the Am/Pm?) is south of that point... it should be the same from there all the way to Cabo San Lucas!

Very good information. Thanks again!

Bob H - 3-31-2011 at 09:59 PM

$4.49/gallon in Maui during our recent vacation and going up every day there!

Today, here in San Diego, bought gas at a Shell station for $4.03/gallon (plus, I get a 5% rebate on my Shell platinum card). Big deal! Someone is making lots of profit on this crapola!

Cypress - 4-1-2011 at 05:11 AM

The bad news is that everything else is going up in price also. The inflation index doesn't include energy and food costs. :?: How's that for voodoo economics? Getting the deja views! It's the '70s all over again. Only thing going down in value is real estate.

8.6 pesos/liter x 3.7854 liters/gallon= 32.554 peso/gal divided by 11.923 peso/$ (todays official rate) = $2.73/ gal if you purchased pesos at official rate

Good for the environment

So, that is 40 centavos difference per liter (1.51 pesos per gallon difference)...
