Interesting concrete effect in old La Pinta in Catavina

We stopped by the Hotel in Catavina about a week apart and I noticed an interesting concrete remodel going on. In the courtyard and around the pool, they left the existing concrete but using an angle grinder with a concrete blade, they cut 'grout' lines about 3 or 4 inches wide, leaving chunks of concrete about 20 sq feet. The grout lines meandered like giant cracks. They then stained the chunks of concrete different earth-tone colors and grouted with very small pebbles in what looked like an epoxy mix and mounded a little higher than the concrete, not lower like in tile. The result was striking and something anyone could do with an old concrete slab. Of course, I did not take pics but stop in a check it out next time thru Catavina.
By the way, on This Old House a few weeks ago, I saw where they made a walkway using old chunks of concrete sidewalk laid like stone.

Broken chunks of concrete from a removed slab are often turned into 'pavers' for paths or seat walls/ planter walls in landscaping. It beats hauling the weight away to a land fill!

Hanson's, exit Harris Plant Road off 163, here in San Diego offers a recycling area for old concrete.... no need to take it to a land fill.

I once sawcut an old driveway into slabs and took them to another house---made a patio with them and used broken brick as a grout joint...came out great but oh my achin' back.

They are building a front covered area at Catavina - lots of noise and work - I did not take a picture though ....

I assume it will be similar to the portico they erected at the San Quintin location. Sound like it will be very welcome during the summer months.

Santiago I am so greatful for this post. I have been blinded by annoyance at the cracks in a slab that we have in our sitting area, I used a method similar to the one you described to fix a bowl (i was a potter) that kept cracking, I never thought to fix my cracked slab that way. It is going to be soooo cool. (i hope) thanks again.

The effect that concrete had on me was the sound of it hitting the ground in the courtyard and waking us both up at 6:30a.m. :lol:

Then to add insult to injury, having to follow the concrete mixer truck in the twisties south of El Rosario. That concrete came all the way from San Quintin.

Catavina is such a magical place.

We're headed North in a few weeks... we'll definitely stop for a look-see.
