Trash from tsunami coming our way

Bob H - 4-7-2011 at 07:15 PM

This is an amazing article (and video model). All the trash/debri from the recent Japan tsunami could hit Hawaii in a year, the US coast in 3 years and eventually Baja before surging back over Hawaii again.

And, they say it will take may more years for it all to decompost in the ocean!! All the while, surging back and forth.

Can you just imagine what the coastline of Malarrimo will look like? WOW!

What a disaster!!!

Wow!

Meet you at Malarrimo Beach October 2014?

Bob H - 4-7-2011 at 07:28 PM

I didn't even think about this until I read the article. Just unbelievable what might happen over the next 15 years (or more).... Bob H

According to a News Flash TODAY Radioactive FISH are swimming our way !

I'm not sure HOW they KNOW that, but it must be true.

Guys with Geiger Counters are following the Fishes ?

Just wondering, But ? "Maybe" they'll Die before they get to us ? Of course, they'd likely be eaten by OTHER Fish who would continue, THEN they'd be eaten, then .........

It's probably BEST to stay out of the water just in case. Who Knows ? Radiated Fish may turn "Rabid" (so to speak) and ATTACK !

Meanwhile, I read today of REALLY Terrible News resulting from the Sushi Shake and Surf.

Disney World is CLOSED !

Not enuf of dat Lectric stuff.

Just as well. What E-Ticket ride could compare to the BIG Wave ?

Bob H - 4-7-2011 at 09:16 PM

Ohhhh... here's a whole lot more! Unbelievable!!!!!

Mateo,

You got it. Dern said that it will have to be ultra military with only a 20 gal holding tank. We may all need one after dragging in all the treasures we find on the beach.

Firemood ?

MrBillM - 4-7-2011 at 09:46 PM

Don't know what it's like today, but when I visited Malarrimo back in the 70s, Firewood (or Firemood as the sign outside San Felipe used to say) was in HUGE abundance.

Second in abundance were myriad U.S. Military Olive-Drab Plastic Containers.

It was clear how the U.S. Navy handled Waste-Disposal.

mcfez - 4-7-2011 at 09:57 PM

My neighbors at our campos, all had just gotten back from Malarrimo Beach last week. Said there are "crews" from the area towns doing routine savaging of the area. Being done day in...day out. Nothing left to be found.

I'm down. Let's go! I've been wanting to do a Malarrimo trip for years.

fishabductor - 4-8-2011 at 08:30 AM

radioactive fish?

Does this mean I need to replace my fish finder with a geiger counter?:saint:

Sooo... the road in and out of there must be greatly improved! I can imagine that when some of this depris comes in in about 3 or 4 years that it will take more than just small "crews" from area towns to reap all the great savaging that will be available then.

Salvaging Nothing Left

MrBillM - 4-8-2011 at 11:00 AM

When we first went to Malarrimo in 1976 there was no town and, for that matter, nobody along the way after you left the Rancho, BUT even in the Cliff Cross Baja Guidebook, he mentioned that permanent residents living in a camp down the beach would scour the area, especially after a storm, and retrieve anything of real value. The most valuable thing we found were those Japanese Glass Fish Floats. Could have filled a Semi-Trailer with those.

It was fun digging through the Crap, though. On a subsequent trip (in 1978), a friend brought back a load of Whale Bones (which mostly destroyed his roof rack) that are still in his front yard.

Try that today.

woody with a view - 4-8-2011 at 11:03 AM

got any floats? i'll buy 3.

All those tuna trollers that got wiped out won't be bagging all the tuna in the sea of cortez anymore.

No...it is NOT. Kirk got stuck attempting to get to the beach, It's a walk in currently

slimshady - 4-10-2011 at 10:36 PM

I will take one of those tuna processing ships that will be part of the debris field when it its the beach.

Pompano - 4-11-2011 at 07:44 AM

Laguna Manuela - west of Jesus Maria (about 25 miles north of Guerrero Negro) -

-- will be a real beachcomber's delight. It's a place where we have found many 'treasures' thrown up by the Japan Current. Plan a camping trip there...but don't forget the Geiger counters.

I'm no Nuclear Physicist but ...

Here's the true scoop from someone that are one:
Uranium is the element used to make the first atomic bomb used on Hiroshima. It is also the material used to make nuclear power plant fission fuel U-235, which has a half life of 700 million years. This means if an explosive accident like Chernobyl occurs, the surrounding land will be contaminated for many generations, but only locally. A reactor typically holds 700 pounds of U-235 and is immersed in water that boils to make turbine electrical energy. A single uranium fuel pellet the size of a fingertip contains as much energy as 17,000 cubic feet of natural gas, 1,780 pounds of coal or 149 gallons of oil.

The water used to cool the core is irradiated and made slightly radioactive in the form of radioisotope Iodine-135, which is what is leaking into the ocean near Japan. The radioactive half-life is 8 days which means it rapidly disperses both in radioactivity strength and concentration (there is a lot of water in the ocean)

There is ZERO likelihood of an explosion that would release radioactivity beyond the borders of Japan. The radioactive water that is being released is of little concerned to any country outside of Japan.

Plutonium PU-139 is the element that is used exclusively for the making of fusion bombs. It has a half life of 24,000 years. This is what is being produced in the North Korean and Iranian enrichment facilities. It isn’t used for nuclear power, and has no other purpose!

So do not fear what is happening in Japan – it can not affect the US. Pay attention to the Axis of Evil who are making WMD’s solely aimed at Us!

Cypress - 4-11-2011 at 11:46 AM

durrellrobert, Thanks for the info. Yea, it's just a matter of time till the North Koreans or Iranians turn one loose on us.

well,... the radiation releases are already measurable in north america.
i suppose it is arguable whether the releases measured in north america were from steam emissions or one of the half dozen explosions in the first week after the initial plant failure...

"is of little concern..."
says who?

Radiating Concern ?

MrBillM - 4-11-2011 at 02:30 PM

So What ? It's a DONE Deed. IF it's coming, it's coming.

Que sera sera as Doris would say.

even though this is getting way off topic, I will try to explain this so that even you can understand:

A rad (meaning radiation absorbed dose) is a unit of measurement used to measure the level of radiation absorbed by a mass.

In our world, the rad is a real unit, being equal to 0.01 Joules per kilogram (1 rad means 0.01 Joules of radiation was absorbed by 1 kilogram of matter). The term "rad" is largely obsoletoutside of the field of nuclear physics, having been replaced by the "sievert" (Sv) for equivalent dose, and 1 rad is equivalent to 0.01 Sievert.

The radiation level detected in British Columbia after the Japan incident was more than six times higher than the normal background at 7.88 milli Sievert (mSv) = 0.000788 rad per year.
[Vancouver’s normal background radiation level is about 1.19 mSv (0 .000119 rad) per year]

Some parts of Europe have normal background radiation of more than 50 mSv per year and in Ramsar, Iran, annual exposure is more than 200 mSv per year.

This chart shows the various radiation hazard levels for humans:

Rads Level Effect
0-199 No Effect
200-399 Minor Radiation Poisoning -1 END
400-599 Advanced Radiation Poisoning -2 END, -1 AGL
600-799 Critical Radiation Poisoning -3 END, -2 AGL
800-999 Deadly Radiation Poisoning -3 END, -2 AGL
1000+ Fatal Radiation Poisoning DEATH (HP: -10,000)

Hence, the radiation detected in B.C.(0.0000788 rads) is 253,808 times less than the minimum amount required for minor radiation poisoning IF YOU WERE EXPOSED TO IT FOR A WHOLE YEAR
