Spanish words I enjoy...gringaderas..all things gringo looked at with bemusement...culero..literally ass chaser..guilty as charged....mujeriego..womanizer, yet in spanish almost sounds romantic....cabron..it once meant a cuckhold or some guy who shares his marriage bed with the neighborhood.. now is commonly used as bastard and depending on tone of voice and intention is even a term of affection

The word precioso....precious in english and rarely used yet in spanish what better way to describe a really hot car or an incredibly cute kid?

Ballena..actually whale but most of you here know it as the favored container for Pacifico Cerveza..I just wish I didnt have to bring the empties back they have a propensity to clone themselves on my back patio and my damn cat is always knocking them over in the middle of the night..

What are your favoritas?

La Madrugada...

I struggled for years to explain my gringo friends the true sentiment of this term because "very early in the morning" just didn't quite do it justice.

Then one afternoon at work, I was asking one of my employees to come in and start her shift early the next morning. "How early?", she asked. "I was thinking between 4 and 4:30," was my reply.

(This employee was from Georgia so her response resonnates even more if you can imagine the drawl) "Oh," she said. "You want me here at the butt-crack of
dawn!"

The translation of la madrugada has been simple for me ever since.
