Shoreline fishing on the sea of cortex

Denaca - 4-10-2011 at 09:30 AM

I am debating on whether to take the fishing gear with me in May. Is anything caught by fishing the shoreline?

woody with a view - 4-10-2011 at 09:45 AM

only if you don't bring the gear! then everyone will be hooked up all around you.

David K - 4-10-2011 at 10:01 AM

Umm... you are talking about a thousand miles of coastline on that side of Baja (Sea of Cortez/ Gulf of California)... WHERE are you going?

It certainly might be fun if you brought your pole and tackle box!

bajalou - 4-10-2011 at 10:03 AM

And no license required when fishing from shore. But even fishing from a kayak requires one.

backninedan - 4-10-2011 at 10:04 AM

If your coming to Loreto, don't bother. Shore fishing is not worth the effort of bring gear down.

bajabass - 4-10-2011 at 10:12 AM

Right now I have been catching small roosters, jacks, and cabrilla casting Krocs and Kastmasters from shore a few clicks north of La Paz.

I would say bring a good long distance casting setup, some spoons, and some small hooks for throwing bait. Just look for bait and birds working the shallows.

By May the further south you are going, the better the shore fishing will be as the water warms in close. Use some good polarized sunglasses and study the water.

I love sitting under a palapa and just waiting to see bait getting chased, then get on it! :bounce:

Thanks for the replies.
We will being traveling all the way down stopping along the way, eventually to visit friends in Pescadero. I'm not looking for the trophies etc. to take photos of - might be nice to catch a few fish for dinner when camping. No great expectations.

wessongroup - 4-10-2011 at 10:37 AM

Thanks for the report bass.. looks like it is working out just fine....

Have another good one...

Cypress - 4-10-2011 at 11:01 AM

Buckets of fish awaits you

mcfez - 4-10-2011 at 11:27 AM

Bring your tackle with you. You have nothing to lose and much to gain. Walking the shoreline is rewarding in itself, and the fish are a bonus.

bajajudy - 4-10-2011 at 12:02 PM

AND if you happen to find yourself in front of the San Jose estuary, you could catch a snook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pompano - 4-10-2011 at 12:04 PM

Skipjack is right...takes almost no extra space...a light castingt rig with 2-3 lures...it'll enhance your trip and give you lots of photo-ops.

The fish below were all caught within casting distance from shore....location was the outer peninsula shorelines of Conception Bay. Smallish, but delicious for dinners.

Fish whatevery looks good to you...but especially water with rocky points and dropoffs along your route. Good luck..Tight lines.

AmoPescar - 4-10-2011 at 01:10 PM

My son and I always had lots of fun fishing from the beach!

We would wear swim trunks and beach shoes and wade into the water to waist or lower chest level.

We used medium/light spinning outfits and smaller lures like chrome/blue
Krocodiles, fish replica lures and small feather type jigs.

With the water being so warm, it's a very fun and relaxing way to fish. With the right accessories (something to hold a cold one) you're ALL set.

Miguelamo  :D

Pompano! You have no legs?

Pescador - 4-10-2011 at 03:31 PM

I use both a flyrod and a spinning rod to cast from shore in the area of Santa Rosalia and depending on the time of the year, there are a lot of fish available. My favorites are Sierra, Corvina, Pargo, basses of various kinds, and even an occasional Cabrilla. I took a little boy out from our village yesterday since we could not take the boat out in the wind and we caught and released 25 or more Barracuda from shore. I used the flyrod and they were easy to catch even in the wind.

Skipjack Joe - 4-10-2011 at 03:42 PM

Way to go, Jim.

burnrope - 4-10-2011 at 03:46 PM

I would recommend LSD or Mescaline for fishing in the Sea of Cortex.

I forgot to mention Peyote.

sure. doesn't take up much space.

if you bring SUP or kayak you will need fishing license

55steve - 4-10-2011 at 04:00 PM

Halibut are commiting suicide in BoLA right now....Silver Kroc or Kastmaster gets the job done.

redhilltown - 4-11-2011 at 12:32 AM

Everyone definitely has you covered on this one! A few lead heads and plastics are also a nice addition if for no other reason, than to see how the triggers mangle them! If you wrap it carefully for the cooler (I'm sure we all have our horror stories) some squid as bait almost guarantees you dinner. Spotted Bay Bass (in the north) are so plentiful they are often scorned but their firm flesh is better than 99.9% of the "fresh" fish you can buy in any market in the states. Ok...maybe I exaggerate but not by much ;D

TMW - 4-11-2011 at 08:50 AM

I have had good luck with the Berkley artifical bait. I've been using the saltwater peeler crabs.

How do we make through the day without having a correction?

I would have been looking on Google to figure out where in the world the Sea of Cortex was.

But, being in the IT biz, we call it the Sea of Core Techs

Perhaps you didn't see Dennis' post, or you are affraid to confront his 'correction'... it wasn't me. I was asking the OP where in the sea (spelling it correctly, but not pointing out the typo).

Curt63 - 4-12-2011 at 05:14 PM

Damn John! Nice shore fishin

805gregg - 4-12-2011 at 05:53 PM

I've seen them catch Dorado off the pier in Puerto Escondido, but that was a couple of years ago 1973. Get the fishing book Baja Catch by Kelly and Kira, it will tell you all about the tackle, fish and fishing spots, that you will ever need.

Gregg...

I did exactly that...off the pier in Puerto Escondido south of Loreto in the early 70's. Dorado, cabrilla, yellowtail...all kinds. Take your lawn chair, a filet knife, some ziplocks, and a cooler...spend the day.

I haven't been to too many, but I kinda suspect this may have been the best pier fishing there ever was!!

Skipjack Joe - 4-12-2011 at 07:38 PM

Yes, that was a fine pier.

Everyone camped along Escondido (before the marina) would head for the pier after supper and spend the eve fishing and socializing. It was a magnet. There was no launch ramp. You just tied your boat to your palapa.

Momma told me Pier Fishing is like a box of chocolates...

It wasn't a correction. It was a "play on words" and harmless. My only regret is that it wasn't the first in this thread.
Jeeeezo...lighten freakin' up.

Just read an article about a sierra shore fishing tournament in WON on line

http://www.wonews.com/Blog.aspx?id=1308

Anybody know where this beach is and what time of year is best?

Thanks

Skipjack Joe - 4-13-2011 at 03:48 PM

Given that it's Gary Graham's blog I would say it's between La Paz and San Jose Del Cabo on the Cortez side.

The "giving them to a local orphanage" was a nice touch. He covered his bases.

Oso - 4-13-2011 at 04:35 PM

While Krocs etc. are good and fun if you like a lot of casting and cranking, I am one lazy SOB. My idea of surf fishing is to cast out a two drop rig with circle hooks, bait, and a pyramid sinker if sand, a Bull Durham sack full of sand if rock. Then stick the rod in a holder, settle back in a lawn chair with a cold Pacifico and wait for them to catch themselves.

My favorite bait is the one Earl Robitaille taught me about. Get a lot of squid, preferably from an oriental market where they're cheap, ahead of your trip. Split them and dry them in the sun. Cut into triangular pieces (so the small end acts like a tail), then pack them in salt (water softener salt works well) in a ziplock bag or tupperware tub. They'll last for months without refrigeration or taking up valuable cerveza room in your cooler. the pieces will be ready to use without cutting or the messiness of fresh bait and seem to work just as well once wet. Triggers go crazy over them.

Actually, that sierra tourney was the Pacific side.
Considering that each angler can legally take 5 sierra, there wasn't any need for the author to cover his bases. I bet the fish really did go to the orphanage. The better question is did they make the orphans fillet that whole pile!
