Think of how the rising fuel and food prices (inflation) impact the locals. You don't even have to think about it really, you can see it in the rising petty crime rates. The Mexican people are being squeezed hard, but so are people north of the border. Baja is improving social programs to help them out- but the real solution for Baja is based on tourists returning, and those jobs being restored. Once tourism bounds- so will the real estate market.

Must be tough on the retirees down there with a limited income. Go back and forth to the states for med and family must truly be hurting.

Jeanette (big boss) and I have engaged in cost cutting efforts of our fuels. Doing "loops" ....line up all the stops we must do (grocery - feed store - vet - ect) on one day. Now taking Nicky to school in the Nissan (44 miles per day!).....and not in the company truck.

Buying a new smaller car...the numbers didnt work. New payments, insurance...bla bla bla.

Would appear that our production methods are somewhat more expensive...

Whatever the source of that was, many of those prices are totally wrong.

Here's a real survey of March 2011 European prices, in Euros per litre:

To convert litres to (US) gallons, multiply by 3.785. To convert Euros to US$, multiply by 1.44. So to convert Euros/Litre to Dollars/Gallon, multiply by (3.785*1.44) = 5.45.

Norway is really $9.84/gallon (not $6.82). Italy $8.34 (not $5.80). Etc. Big difference. Looks like a bunch of old prices on that list, although a few (like Canada, which seems about right) may have been added recently.

my factura says $2.57 usa a gallon yesterday in mulege for regular

i paid $4.09 usa in southern california last week

i think $4 usa a gallon is alot...of course i remember 25 cents a gallon

My understanding is that oil prices are based on the world market established in oil futures trading. American oil producing companies are selling their oil on the world market and enjoying that high oil price, regardless of the cost to produce it.

My point is this. If the USA's current oil production is always and only sold at the world market price, what good does it do us US citizen-gasoline consumers to have the USA oil companies drill more if all that oil production is just going to be sold back to the oil refineries at the world market price?

The world market price is controlled by supply and demand as reflected in the world oil futures market. The cartels control the world supply. All oil companies enjoy the profits from the high oil prices regardless of the cost to produce, and we peon citizens pay high prices at the pump.

I don't see how more USA oil production helps us gasoline consumers. I only see how it helps oil company profits.

I'm with Tom Friedman on this. The *only* effective way to reduce our dependence on oil (hey, there is *no* choice and the sooner the better) is a high price. He thinks it would be good public policy to maintain the price at $4.

I remember the "GAS WAR" days in the mid sixties. I paid .18c per gallon across from what is now the Arco building (near the corner of Ocean Blvd. and Atlantic)

Bob and Susan, what foreign currency exchange rate are you using to calculate your $2.57 USD/gal figure? Also, what is the peso cost per liter that you are using? Just curious as that $2.57 seems really low. I want your low price as I am going to La Paz later this month. Was in La paz in early March and I paid more than $2.57 USD/gal. Darn price jumped even during that trip.

We all need to drive smaller vehicles for basic transportation. I cringe when I see a 100 lb girl step out of a Hummer or Escalade at the super market.

These prices were a FWD from my CPA, I did not feel a need to SNOPES them, since part of his motto is to TRUST A CPA.
