It's that time of year again... Grunion

BajaWarrior - 4-12-2011 at 04:20 AM

Just got back from a week long trip to our Beach House below San Felipe and witnessed daytime Grunion runs. They were as thick and as far as the eyes could see at least two days in a row.

Tyson got his fill too, I had to tie him up after two dozen or so...

here's a "secret". get the fishing pole and hook one on every pole you have. all of the halibut and other predators are gorging in about 5-8' of water. think they don't know the grunion are running?

man, that is some really tasty eating!...i be gorging right alongside the halibut...they are soooo easy to clean and cook.

Another grunion benefit is to use them as bait! We have collected grunion and froze them to use them on a later fishing trip to Laguna Manuela... Man-o-man do the yellowfin croaker and halibut and calico bass bite on them BIG TIME!

Chuck, that is an awesome photo of the daytime Cortez grunion run!!

Does anyone know when it is on the Pacific side? I recall it was late May last year

next run is 17, 18, 19 and 20 of april, about 10pm and later. april and may are observation months only, no catching. there are 8 days of expected runs in may.

I've seen it during the day on the Pacific side as well, near Punta San Jacinto (Shipwrecks) just North of Camalu.

Grunion...
I would collect them and make fertilizer / compost.
Salted down for bait too.

snip their heads off with scissors, roll em in flour and fry em in hot oil quickly...some of the best snacks around...just like NW smelt.

A Grunion is not to be missed and will give you a chance at the finest beach fishing to be had until the next run on the SOC or the Pac side.

They will stage for a day or two before and after the run which gives you a chance for several days of great fishin, all kinds of critters join in on the fun, when staging tye on a blue/chrome K/M and your in business.

When they are on the beach put the K/M away and stick a live one on and hang on. everything eats those things,I caught two thresher sharks so you never know what to expect.
