Horse camps

mcfez - 4-13-2011 at 07:06 AM

Looking for a list of horse camps with all accommodations. In Northern Baja.....from San Quintín to BoLA to San Felipe

I was just informed that fishing is out...and horse riding is in...by the big boss, for next year :)

David K - 4-13-2011 at 07:37 AM

It was once a feature at Mike's Sky Rancho... I think they have been replaced by 'iron horses' now.

larryC - 4-13-2011 at 07:40 AM

Not sure if I know what a horse camp is, but I suspect if you rode into San Borja they could feed and water your horse for you. Out beyond San Borja is Aguaje, and there is water there but no rancho. And while you are in that area the San Juan mine is a really intersting area. No water there but it is only 5 or so miles back to Aguaje and then westerly to rancho San Gregorio, and just just a little farther to San Borja. Or on the way from Gregorio to Borja from Gregorio, turn left down the valley and go through Sana Anna, lots of water there. Lots of places to explore by horse down here in the Bahias area.
Larry
PS I just remembered rancho Meiling, I stopped there to help them with their starband system and they for sure could take care of your animals.

Oh, I didn't realize Deno was bringing horses to Mexico... I thought he wanted a campo/ rancho that rented them for riding...?

Larry, I want to ask you about driving up to San Juan (I have driven to San Gregorio, 10 years ago)... But, let's discuss it in another thread.

Pompano - 4-13-2011 at 08:07 AM

Check with Trudi in Loreto. She knows horses, mules, and Baja.

I've known her since the 70's. With her husband, she does all kinds of adventure travels in Baja.

I just assumed he had his own horses, maybe he means places to go and use their horses. He'll let us know what he is looking for. I think Jose at San Borja could still accomodate him.

mcpez:
start with mehling ranch, rancho la bellota, hacienda santa veronica. i think there are a good number of dude ranch type outfits in north baja (some market mostly to mex visitors), but i don't think the horsy set hangs out in nomadlandia.

try asking the astrobaja dude, he may know about dude ranches in his area.

also, try calling rancho la puerta (the pricy spa). they may be able to refer you to local working guest ranches.

something i have always wanted to do is a pack trip in high areas of san pedro martir plateau -- if you find someone that does that well, tell me.

4 pounds pinto beans, picked over and rinsed
1 pound horse (or burro), chopped
1 large onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
3 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons freshly ground black pepper
1 (12-ounce) can diced tomatoes with green chiles
3 whole jalapeno peppers
Directions
Place beans in a large pot with a tight-fitting cover and add enough water to cover beans by about 2 inches. Bring to a boil over high heat. Meanwhile, place bacon, onion, and garlic in a medium cast iron frying pan and brown the mixture, while stirring, over medium heat. Add bacon mixture to beans. Reduce heat and simmer until beans are soft, about 3 hours total cooking time, adding more hot water if needed. Add chili powder, sugar, salt, pepper, diced tomatoes with green chiles, and jalapeno peppers. Simmer for another 10 minutes and then serve.

chris....are you using horse meat in the recipe???

Maderita - 4-13-2011 at 11:03 AM

Rancho la Mentada - Sierra de Juarez foothills east of Ensenada

Rancho la Bellota - Guadalupe Valley between Ensenada & Tecate, a first class operation http://bajarancho.com/

I could use some help with my bean recipe. Is burro really better than horse for beans? Is there an easy way to cook beans on the trail? I mean without using all of ones fuel.

this festival looks interesting: http://www.diadelcaballo.com/
and this looks fun too: http://www.countrythrowdown.com/date/all/june_26_2011-4

chrisx:
perhaps you can put on a bike polo exhibition. do you play bike polo?

p.s. chris: if you can carry a cast iron pan, you can carry the necessary fuel or go scavenge up fuel in the bush. when you head up to SPM, you will find big pine forests and the dead fall alone is millions of cords of firewood awaiting you. remember that only you can prevent forest fires!

Some of the best mountain bike routes SE of Ensenada are bring watched by military personnel with machine guns. They hang around the water holes mumbling something about smugglers on horse back.

the horsy set hates mountain bikers even more than dennis the menace of punta banda.

Not Much Information on Baja Norte Horse Backpacking Trips

Gypsy Jan - 4-13-2011 at 12:40 PM

Maybe you should contact the Rosarito Tourist Information Office.

There are always rancheros in town next to the Rosarito Beach Hotel renting out horses to ride on the beach and they do tours up into the hills where one of Pancho Villa's Generals (according to legend) hid his loot in a cave.

You can learn a lot of interesting, allegedly historic, information on those rides.

Also, here is contact information about an American organizer of back packing trips in Baja Sur:

I forgive DENNIS for being such a menace when he typed "100% disability from the VA." I'm a little worried about that triple digit guy and his threads,
where do you live in the states?
where do you live in baja?
post your photo
where does your retirement income come from?

mcfez - 4-13-2011 at 10:51 PM

Sorry folks...to some.
Wife is looking for a ranch that offers horses as well. Taking ours on a 900 mile road trip would be cruel to the animals.

mtgoat666 ...txs too 4 the good info

In addition to Rancho la Bellota and Rancho la Mentada, I forgot to add Rancho Rodeo del Rey in the Sierra de Juarez a few miles north of Laguna Hanson/Parque Nacional.
http://www.rodeodelrey.com/
http://www.rodeodelrey.com/cabalgatas.html
The elevation is between 5,000' and 6,000' with pine forest, granite crags, and a mountain lake. Spring and summer is beautiful there, with mild temperatures. They operate a small hotel, cabins, and restaurant.
I can't vouch for their services; I've only driven past and read internet trip reports.

Baja.BBQ - 4-14-2011 at 03:27 PM

McFez, just saw on another site that the Melling Ranch in the vicinity of Mikes Sky Ranch rents horses. I do not have contact info.
