another fmt question

Quick one, but I'm headed to Bahia de Los Angeles and maybe further soon, and I'm in Ensenada now. Do they absolutely give you a fine here in Ensenada if you don't have one yet and try to obtain it here?

BajaWarrior - 4-14-2011 at 04:20 AM

yes, get one at the border or don't get one at all.

woody with a view - 4-14-2011 at 04:49 AM

agree.

To be more clear, many many people arrive in Ensenada and every other port of entry as their first port of entry and they get a FMT without a fine. But, they do so while arriving at the border or the waterfront port office and in fact they do check in with passport and 'evidence' of your arrival for example by boat (name), that type of arrival has other implications in some cases, quarantine/boat inspection.

Every other port of entry also provides opportunity to check in and get FMT with Passport as your first port of entry, embarkation,

A fine is associated with a failure to check in at port of entry within a reasonable time frame.

(caveat: if you arrive by car and can show a time stamped receipt for example a very recent northern toll road receipt-along with a USA fast food receipt-showing you just arrived and have immediately proceeded to check in you may argue you have met the requirements-bring evidence. The agents are just trying their best to do their job and they want to follow the rules/which change often. Ensenada is not very helpful. Keep it in mind, if you arrived by boat you would be walking to the office, perhaps with your ditch bag and story of a sudden crew breakup-the boat (name) would have dropped you off-without touching/stopping/you jumped on a panga and left, if you arrive by car you would drive...)

I would not say that they will "absolutely" give you a fine. I did get a fmt there once without issue. I think it has more to do with some of their attitudes. There is one jerk there in particular - just hope you don't get him. I know I will not go there again because they were so unpleasant. Good luck!!!

Can you get a FMT at Algodones????????

BajaKeela - 4-14-2011 at 07:52 AM

You sure can!!! Get one at Algodonnes..We do it every year..Just leave your vehicle on the U.S. side..walk across, the office is about three doors down on your right ..give him your documentation, fill out the form..then go just around the corner to the bank .. pay the fee..return to the immigration office for him to stamp your FMT and return your documentation..Go back to the US and cross later at Tecate or wherever you wish.
The officer there is one of the most pleasant people I've ever met.
Works for us !! And takes very little time.

Every open border has an INM office... it is a bank teller nearby that is an issue for paying the fee, as government officials in Mexico cannot accept money :wow::lol:

Thank You,

I went past their last time to go to San Ysidro early one morning and the guy at the office did not show up and was closed at 5 A.M. so did not get one. now i will go over to Algodones. Have you ever entered at Algodones and headed West?

BajaKeela - 4-14-2011 at 08:05 AM

Not us ...Algodonnes is not great when you have a big rig ..If I was in a car or smaller vehicle I wouldn't hesitate..
My hubby says he puts up with enough back seat squeals when in Mexico
