New outboard to Mulege

mulegejim - 4-14-2011 at 08:07 AM

Anybody bring a new motor into Mexico lately? I've got a buddy who is thinking of buying a new Yamaha motor and bringing it to Mulege. Can you cross at TJ or do you need to go through Otay - any idea what percent the duty would be? Also, are there dealers for Yamaha outboards in Baja? Thanks, Jim

Put it on a boat. There must be Yamaha dealers somewhere because they are so popular in Baja.

If it's a replacement motor for a boat that has an import permit there is a process for importation without paying taxes.

Thanks, problem is the boat is in Mulege with the current motor and he is here in the USA. Couldn't find dealers on the Yamaha web site but that may be my fault. I agree, there has to be dealers in Baja. Jim

An import permit? I was told that you didn't need an import permit any longer. ???

I saw a trailer with Yamaha signs all over it along Hwy 1 in downtown Sta. Rosalia last week. I hadn't noticed it before, and my impression was a new dealer. Just north of Boleo as I recall.

I've brought 4 outboards down, including a 90Hp 4 stroke..

Have never had a problem, but then again, I've never been asked a question going across...........

YMMV tho......

I'm always just taking my motor back after having a tuneup/repairs in the states... Thats gonna be my story if I ever get asked.

It's a problem if the motor is not attached to a boat, a friend of mine got dinged for duty and a fine by aduana a few years ago trying to slip one in.
