My Cirhuelo in La Paz

Bajatripper - 4-14-2011 at 12:43 PM

Around this time every year my cirhuelo (plum, although there's nothing "plummy" about its fruit) springs to life after it's winter sleep. Although we also have other fruit trees on the property, the cirhuelo always catches my attention in a special way.

It's our only deciduous tree, so it spends a few months a year looking dead. But what makes me take special notice of it is the way it produces its fruit. Unlike my other trees, which have obvious flowers, the cirhuelo has such tiny ones that the fruit seems to spring from the naked branches, even before the leaves.

Once the fruit has grown a bit, it gives the tree an unusual aspect and reminds me some of the Christmas tree we once had made from a palo adan from the Mogote.

Thought I'd share some pictures, now that I'm getting a handle on sizing the damn things!

The tree with fruit.

Nice Pics. I have a plum tree at my home in California. About 3 weeks ago it blossomed with white flowers and looked like a cherry tree blossoming. Then, within about two weeks, the blossoms go away and the fruit shows up about 3 months later.

The tree is very delicate looking, very "feminine" looking, it's beautiful.

Bajatripper, That's not your run of the mill plum tree. Thanks.

What perfect pictures and great description of a Cirhuleo. I have seen some old ones that have great twisty turny gnarly characters, truly they are a most magnificent tree for us here in Southern Baja. Sure glad you learned to down load pictures onto Nomad. Thanks!
