BB guns in Baja

805gregg - 4-14-2011 at 06:29 PM

In the light that they are legal in Baja, I just happened upon a BB pistol on sale at Big 5 a Smith and Wesson gas powered 19 shot semi auto for $39. I had to buy it just to see, 480fps, wow this would totally stop most intruders animals etc. Shot right through a 1/4" thick catalog. Just a thought, plus it's fun to shoot.

mulegemichael - 4-14-2011 at 07:43 PM

yeah....we've got a couple of really powerful pellet rifles down here....i want one of those handgun deals tho....i want the guy that ripped us off a couple months ago to KNOW i have it, too.

BAJA.DESERT.RAT - 4-14-2011 at 07:47 PM

Hola 805gregg,

i have friends in the east cape that have pellet guns that i have understood to believe 177 and possibly 22 calibers are legal to posess and shoot.

i have a 22 caliber beeman but it's on the noisy side so i don't shoot it in l.a.

however, i do also have a daisy bb gun that's powerful enough but doesn't do a lot of harm to intruding animals but gives them a pretty good sting and keeps them out of my yard.

BIEN SALUD, DA RAT

woody with a view - 4-14-2011 at 07:52 PM

i got one of them, they look real in the dark. i don't think a tweeker would be detered, but 19 bb's in the face/neck/chest to a mere mortal would give you a chance at 25 feet. and by chance i mean "the chance to kick his nalga while he was cowering on the ground wondering WTF just hit him, before you REALLY did!"

:light:

Bwana_John - 4-14-2011 at 08:00 PM

I believe it has to be less than .22 caliber.

And while someone you shoot can very well die eventually without medical attention (usually when their abdominal cavity is puncture by the tiny projectiles coming out of the new high velocity guns), he is gonna be really mad for the next couple of hours and not really incapacitated.

The ER doctors hate the new guns.... little tiny holes and kids too embarrassed to tell why they arent feeling so well.

so the ER docs would rather see gaping wounds?

and the punks? well, who gives a crap what they think as long as they "think"?

Bwana_John - 4-14-2011 at 08:33 PM

If it means they can find and control the problem faster, yes they would be rather be able to see big gaping wounds.

Im guessing you have never been shot by a air gun. While it might shoot your eye out it wont stop anybody.

There is a huge difference between something eventually lethal, and instantaneous stopping force.

MikeYounghusband - 4-14-2011 at 09:55 PM

the one I carried on my trip was a Daisy pump. 750 fps and you can buy pointed gold plated 177 ammo that increases it to 1000 fps. Never met an animal that didn't respect the sting it gave. Although I never used on a human.
Army checked it many times and had no problem with it. Don-Kay finally stepped on it and and it wasn't much good anymore.

Maybe Don-Kay thought you might use it on him and decided to make sure you didn't.

Another reason they hate that type of wound, especially ice-pick wounds, is they have to cut the victim wide open to clean them. I heard that somewhere.

As for pellet guns....Cabela's sells one, a rifle type, that travels 1600 FPS. That is one badass pellet.

Bajaguy, forgive my ignorance, but how do you use a green laser for self defense? Shine it in the asailant's eyes? If so, what is the immediate effect?

Dennis, do you know what the model is for the 1600 fps rifle you mentioned at Cabela's?

fella's

if "they" come at me or mine i will put at least 10 of 19 in their face, for starters.

that gives me enough time to collect my wits and grab my "tool", ahem, MACHETE and go Bruce Lee on their assess.

at that time, if they are still in standing, i have a green laser that i will happily pry open their eyes and experiment, Neptune willing!

UNLESS they pull a 9mm. then i will post a trip report.

you all can pick apart my response, how it is not a good self defense strategy. do what you will but don't get in my range. if you do, post a trip report.....

Right off hand, Mitch, no I don't, but you can find it. Just go to Cabela's and start looking through the pellet rifles. They all give the FPS.

Or....I haven't tried this, but Google 1600 feet per second pellet rifles...buy.

MitchMan - 4-15-2011 at 10:38 AM

Thanks, Dennis, there is alot of material out there on the web. I want a pistol at 0.177 that can shoot at least six pellets or BBs rapid fire and has more than 900 fps capacity. I want one.

Pompano - 4-15-2011 at 10:40 AM

BB and pellet combo...cheap, simple, pump..find lots on Craigslist for $75 or less.

Little more power and cost..Gama 'Hunter' model w/variable scope...high velocity. $$$ But not for stopping a human..never. Get yourself a street-sweeper for that...12ga. 00 buck ...but it'll be real messy to clean up.

Use hunting points...good to go for quail, rabbits, doves, mapache

The best protection is a wild woman with a mop.

Just research "Green Laser aircraft" on the web.

Over 1/4 mile range......close up intimidation factor, and applied to the face/eyes causes immediate temporary (prolonged application may produce permanent) blinding.

Not a toy, but a serious weapon. Will take someone out of the fight.

Glad I'm able to own a real gun in the good old USA, a Ruger .44 caliber 10 1/2" barrel single action revolver. BB-guns?:D

why don't you learn how to use a knife?
slash horizontal across forehead, the victim will be blinded by blood in eye, and you won't do much damage (avoid murder rap).
but even before slashing, if you brandish quickly, he will keep eyes on knife, allowing you to kick him in balls.

805gregg - 4-16-2011 at 05:52 PM

I have a Beeman pump air rifle that is single shot and 1000 fps but I'm afraid that would be lethal. A simi auto pistol that would sting or harm but not kill is what I was looking for, the best part is that 480 fps you can see the bb's for a tracer like effect, after 3 shots your right on the target.

bajaguy - 4-16-2011 at 06:04 PM

I would think that if you point something that looks like a real weapon at somebody and pull the trigger, it better do something more than sting.

You had better be ready to take them out of the fight, not p*ss them off

woody with a view - 4-16-2011 at 06:47 PM

dont think, react. at night a realistic bb gun in the face of a tweeker looks like a realistic gun. put 5-8 in his face for effect. then a well placed Beckham to the nards and let your wife finish him off while he squirms on the ground-while you stand ready with the tool, AHEM, machete!

or just give up....

I'm thinking of the 10 yr old that came to the E.D. with a pellet lodged in his myocardium. He survived but it was not a good day for him! You are right.....little hole.....lot's of trouble!

MitchMan - 4-20-2011 at 07:54 AM

Most of these BB guns are about 400 to 500 fps. Is that fast enough to actually do any damage to an intruder or assailant? 805gregg said that 1,000 fps would be lethal. Can anybody corroborate that?

What I am looking for is a legal .177 pellet pistol that is NOT a single shot pistol but can shoot 6 pellets or more, one after the other, then reloadable quickly. Would like to see at least 650 fps. I don't know, does that exist?

Looking for something that is very effective for self defense. Thinking of using a combination of pepper spray and a
BB or pellet pistol. Saw a canister of pepper spray for a bear, shoots 30 feet, costs $35 USD, big as a tall can of spray paint. Maybe even a taser.

MikeYounghusband - 4-20-2011 at 07:59 AM

I saw them in Walmart in LaPaz. Didn't read the fps or how many pellets they hold but you can get that info on the Walmart web site

Bwana_John - 4-20-2011 at 08:56 AM

Projectiles are commonly rated by "Foot Pounds" of energy.

177 pellet @ 500fps = 4.5 ft lbs
177 pellet @ 1000fps = 17.7 ft lbs
22LR = 67 ft lbs
9mm pistol = 255 ft lbs
45acp pistol = 413 ft lbs
5.56mm rifle = (M-16, US rifle) 1100 ft lbs
7.62mm rifle = (G-3, Mex soldado's rifle) 2428 ft lbs

Nuts. Now we have to do the math. I always thought FPS was Feet Per Second. I guess I'll just continue thinking that. :light:

mcfez - 4-20-2011 at 09:24 AM

Wasp spray can shoot up to twenty feet away and is accurate aim. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote.

Cheaper. Legal. Easy carry.

Wasp killer spray is VERY effective, but it can causes permanent problem for the receiving end.

Spearguns, flare guns, pepperspray, and wasp killer spray would all be more effective than a air pistol under .22 cal IMO.

FPS does mean Feet per second.
To find Ft lbs multiply the product of the weight of the pellet (in grains) times the square of the velocity and divide that number by 450240. That last number is a constant created by multiplying two times the acceleration of gravity by 7,000 - the number of grains in a pound.

Great info!

Bwana-John, great info, I like and understand numbers.

McFez, the more I think about using pepper spray or even the wasp spray, the more I like the idea because of the reliability of the effect of pepper spray while not injuring the assailant, thereby not incurring any liability due to injury. Is there any risk of actually poisoning an assailant with the wasp spray, as far as you know? Ooops, Bwana-John just answered the question.

Dennis, found a Crossman C11 C02 BB pistol, 480 fps, many good reviews and only $36 USD.

Foot pounds is actually a archaic unit derived by the old practice of using a ballistic pendulum to quantify energy.

The projectile could swing a X pound hanging plate back one foot when hit.

The modern SI equivalent would be Joules.

Here's my simple take on the subject of self defense: I dare not let harm come to my family....... or towards me. Crankters to the the guy with criminal intent ...who cares about their well being as they walk towards you .......with their eyes displaying violence?

Pellet rifles will not help you in time of duress. It aint some John Wayne movie where every shot hit's it's target and kills instantly. I'm 244 pounds...you best aim and succeed in shooting my eye out to stop me!

If any one here has ever been involved in a face to face situation....you'll agree with me that a little ol pea shooter aint going do much good :-)
