Tired of trailering - Been doin a little fabricating

Curt63 - 4-17-2011 at 08:55 PM

While trailers carry a lot of stuff, they slow you down and limit where you can go.

This is how I've been traveling the last several years. Works Great!

But this summer, I'm running light.

It even has a "special feature"

With this new rack, I can have a quad in the bed and gear on the cargo rack. When I stand on it and bounce up and down over the truck cab it only flexes a 1/2"

My friend Zeke did the welding and I was the designer and Gofer (cutting, grinding, painting etc)

I'm going south all the way to the tip for 3 weeks this summer.

What do you think?

DENNIS - 4-17-2011 at 09:02 PM

I think the Pacifico Popper makes it. Excellent design and job.

Bajaboy - 4-17-2011 at 09:03 PM

I assumed the rack was for the cases of cerveza

woody with a view - 4-18-2011 at 05:30 AM

looks good, but one ?

where does the board fit?

Bob and Susan - 4-18-2011 at 06:01 AM

the beer opener is too high...how do the small guys reach...ladder?

nice job;D

rts551 - 4-18-2011 at 07:02 AM

good job Curt. Makes a lot of sense

tripledigitken - 4-18-2011 at 08:01 AM

Very nice fabrication. Now if you just add an expanded metal trash can below that opener!

Lauriboats - 4-18-2011 at 08:49 AM

Wow, great job!

Von - 4-18-2011 at 09:09 AM

NicE!

AmoPescar - 4-18-2011 at 01:53 PM

VERY COOL IDEA!

Your design is great and your friend did nice work. I especially love the built in opener!

I've trailered a quad to Baja many times and having it in the P/U bed would definitely make it easier!

An idea for you...maybe you could get an upholstery shop in Baja to make you a custom made heavy vinyl cover to keep out some of the dust and bugs.

Miguelamo  :bounce: ;D

elgatoloco - 4-18-2011 at 02:18 PM

Helper springs?

Curt63 - 4-18-2011 at 08:45 PM

Thanks for your comments and suggestions amigos.

We had some good times making it.

Cheers, Curt

I had an opener mounted on the front basket of my Polaris quad. It was very handy when out on a ride. It got lots of use and was worth every penny I spent on it!

Miguelamo   :tumble:

TMW - 5-24-2011 at 11:15 AM

That is a great job. You did good.

Russ - 5-24-2011 at 01:38 PM

Absolutely a cool design. But I think you'll miss the canopy.

Mexitron - 5-24-2011 at 02:01 PM

Nice solution!

1bobo - 5-24-2011 at 04:46 PM

Add some portable ramps, stand your quad on its tail & double your bed cargo area. I did that hauling my quad down & it's easier than it might seem.

Curt63,

It was a pleasure meeting you and the other Nomad's on 30th & Grape! I always appreciate seeing DIY mods and your solution to your trailer dilemma appears to be well solved. The only concern I may have is with the bottle opener...what grade rivets did you use for the mounting and I would have attached some sort of lanyard to it just in case the rack was to fall off . Seriously though, good job and have a safe trip!

All loaded up and ready to roll

Curt63 - 6-18-2011 at 05:37 PM

Yep, everything for 2 guys fits.

Shrimp tacos at Tacos Fenix for breakfast, a ride out the San Quintin peninsula and dinner at Posada Don Diego tomorrow!

Life's goooood!

Happy Fathers Day Nomads!

Russ - 6-18-2011 at 06:07 PM

Nice job. Suggestion.... if you put the rod holders on you quad in front your reels will not get nearly as dirty.

BajaGringo - 6-18-2011 at 07:43 PM

Looks great!!!

Pacifico - 6-19-2011 at 06:39 AM

Good job Curt!!! Wish we could have hooked up in the coming weeks on your trip....I can't wait to hear your trip report! Your project turned out great and it looks like it will serve the purpose. Now you can get to that special spot much easier!:lol::lol:

CortezBlue - 1-15-2013 at 11:16 AM

Your buddy did a great job on those welds.

Question, I have a Snugtop Camper on my truck and was wondering if you could put a cage on the top? I have a Yakima system that I havent messed with on my truck as it is on my small car.

Yes, you can. I used to have a Snugtop shell...just be careful of the weight you put on it and put large "feet" to spread out the load at the attachment points. A lot probably depends upon which model shell you have....

wessongroup - 1-16-2013 at 08:15 AM

Curt63 ... way cool setup :):)

Ateo - 1-16-2013 at 08:19 AM

Yeah Curt, you got that rig dialed in. Nice work.
