Then and Now

bajafam - 4-20-2011 at 05:37 AM

I came across some fun photos of some of our Baja trips. These in particular I found interesting ~

This is Bobo standing in a cave in a "secret spot" on Bahia Falso San Quintin, in 2007.

Here she is in the same cave, now covered with sand, in 2008.

I'm curious to see the difference in this spot today.

I find it fascinating how quickly the landscape changes along the coast. Does anyone else have any pictures of places with drastic changes in such a short period of time?

That's amazing!

I'm most positive that Pompano will have some images to share... Bob H

The absolute delight on that child's face is priceless.

thank you Iflyfish :)
THAT face is what Baja is all about

Interesting post topic... thank you!

Then and Now, but over 100 years!!

fixtrauma - 4-20-2011 at 08:25 AM

This isn't over just one year as in your pictures but it is a Baja "Then and Now" over a 100 year span.

This street is in La Paz.

Then.........

And now.

I wonder if the people on the left side of the first picture are ancestors of the guys who always want to wash your car when you park on that street!!
:lol::lol::lol:

Great!

100 years ago, weren't they in the middle of a Revolution?

woody with a view - 4-20-2011 at 06:35 PM

my "secret spots" don't count......

BajaBlanca - 4-20-2011 at 06:57 PM

the street without the electricity wiring is so much nicer ....

Bajafam,

Your then and now beach pictures show clearly how all that speculation about shell beach and global warming was sheer nonsense.

Thank you for the post.

David K - 4-21-2011 at 12:01 AM

What about Shell Beach? Is Russ okay?? :o

bajafam - 4-21-2011 at 06:07 AM

fixtrauma ~ great pictures. I love to see the way that people have changed their landscape, but I must tell you, I am absolutely fascinated by the way Mother Nature does it.

I vaguely recall the two beach days that I posted, but looking back at the photos I am amazed!! There is literally a 6 foot difference in the level of the beach. And the most amazing part is that this occurred in just under a year. Bobo was 1 year and 6 months old in the first picture, and the second one she was 2 years and 3 months. I can't wait to visit again soon so that I can see whether the sand has been washed back out or more has come in.

kind of makes you wonder what else is hiding under all that sand!!

Great smile that little one! Happy kids are from happy parents.......

Sand movement is due to currents. Currents are influenced by swell direction. Swell direction are due to storms and storms are influenced by the weather patterns (winter summer).

(ie) I don't think it is so much from one year to the next, but summer versus winter. Was one pict taken in summer and another in winter?

Very cute pict BTW, it is exciting to be naked on a secluded beach in Mexico

the typical cycle is beaches accumulate sediment in summer (small wave action), lose sediment in winter (large wave action), but each beach can vary.

the dynamic nature of beaches and estuaries is poorly (not) understood by a certain bloviating shell island booster, and his opinions of global warming on basis of shell island observations are utter nonsense.

bajafam - 4-21-2011 at 11:59 AM

I believe the first was in August the other was for sure in May.

Yup, instead of watching Algore movies, I actually GO to the beach... the same beach for over 30 years... and it is still there... the salt flats that are flooded by only the highest tides... are STILL only flooded by the highest tides... Concrete pads (that don't rise and fall) are still the same elevation above sea level... and this is throughout Baja (and the world)... talking about measurable change greater than the length of a cigarette.

I know it serves your masters to spread fear, create laws, raise taxes, restrict freedom... on the lie of man made climate change. I use common sense and personal observation and am not trying to scare anyone or take their rights away.

Beach erosion happens all the time... and it eats up property or it builds up sand... but the level of the ocean is unchanged... and in a place that has a 20 foot daily rise and fall in sea level... the length of a cigarette is unchanged!

Just the facts. Just the facts. No radio regurgitating here

My apologies for sidetracking your fine thread here, Bajafam.

Hopefully it will right itself with other examples of now and then.

Paulina has lots of Ensenada pictures from the 50's.

bajafam - 4-21-2011 at 03:09 PM

It's all good SkipJack :)
shhh ~ don't tell anyone that I kind of thought about that when I found the pics

As the world warms, sea levels could easily rise three to six feet this century. But increases will vary widely by region, with prevailing winds, powerful ocean currents, and even the gravitational pull of the polar ice sheets determining whether some coastal areas will be inundated while others stay dry.

Seriously, DK? Global warming is a joke, because it has not yet directly affected your life? That surprises me-hope you at least err on the side of caution.
