Food at the Border

watizname - 4-23-2011 at 05:17 PM

Leaving on Monday O Dark Thirty for a month of fun and games with friends in the Mulege area. Crossing at TJ probably around 6:30 or so and I was wondering if there had been any foods confiscated by the Border Guards.

BajaBlanca - 4-23-2011 at 05:54 PM

no chicken can come south ..... it is on the picture board of no no food as you cross.

krafty - 4-23-2011 at 06:16 PM

wow-we bring chicken all the time-I thought you couldn't bring it back to the US??:o

Jim/Liisa - 4-23-2011 at 06:20 PM

I know you can't have chicken crossing to the US side. where did you see or hear about this?

DENNIS - 4-23-2011 at 06:30 PM

This links to Sign-on-San Diego so you have to be patient. For me, it's always been slow.

Tjuana crossing

BajaBlanca - 4-23-2011 at 07:15 PM

somewhere I probably have a picture of the sign, I will hunt to see if I can find it ...

I looked and I don't know where it is ... but we ALWAYS have to go to inspection because our truck looks just like those segunda trucks with stuff piled up high like there is no tomorrow .... and as I have time to look around the inspection area ... one of the newer signs has a chicken on it with a line thru it.

No one has ever asked us what kind of food or how much, we are bringing into Mexico and we've never given it a thought. They are concerned however when they see tires or boxes of wine!!!

redhilltown - 4-23-2011 at 10:54 PM

Egads 829, I do hope you mean "boxes of bottles of wine" as opposed to "boxed wine"... there are standards to be upheld on this board after all :tumble:

Bob and Susan - 4-24-2011 at 06:08 AM

boxed "whine" is good as long as it has 24 bottles in it:lol:

Why would someone want to have unmounted tires?

My experience is that they are the same price if not cheaper in mexico. Tires are definately cheaper when mounted and balances in mexico. Shop rates in the states are ridiculous.

It seems like a waste of space to me.

mcfez - 4-24-2011 at 07:07 AM

I always sneak in my Ribs and potato salad. ......usually we hide the stuff inside the spare tire in the trunk.

nbacc - 4-24-2011 at 09:20 AM

We have brought chicken every time we come down! AND they have often times checked out our cooler and it is right there. Never heard of that. BUt, nothing suprises me anymore. We always bring our own wine and beer and use it until we run out and then buy in SF. Just dont like to go and shop the first couple of days..........we get there and like to beach, golf and play not shop. Nancy

Bob and Susan - 4-24-2011 at 09:40 AM

hey..our chicken in mulege is WAY better than the states
eggs too

beer is better
wine sucks here

water isn't as good
i'd bring that

krafty - 4-24-2011 at 09:45 AM

Just re-read the article. Looks to me like you cannot go into the States with fowl and their ilk-think it is still ok to bring it into MX

watizname - 4-24-2011 at 10:27 AM

Thanks for the replys guys. I'm going to hide my three cases of two buck chuck in my MOUNTED spare.

lizard lips - 4-24-2011 at 10:53 AM

Yeah....that sign was hung there by the Tourist Bureau.

BajaBlanca - 4-24-2011 at 03:17 PM

hahaha

oh my goodness......the sign has a chicken with a red cross over it - I swear !!! we too brought frozen chicken across because we had never heard of this before. We had a cooler full of food and they never blinked at it - but the sign definitely says NO FOWL and I even asked to confirm this was true.

Oh Yes, This is a New Law

Gypsy Jan - 4-24-2011 at 03:29 PM

Jim/Liisa - 4-24-2011 at 04:24 PM

You can no longer take beer over either, I have been asked at the border.
Probabley because they want you to by it over there.

Bring Money

The Gull - 4-24-2011 at 05:26 PM

Bring money so you have somthing to put on the hood of your car when stopped by police.

BajaBlanca - 4-24-2011 at 05:41 PM

beer ??? see, that's a new one for us.

krafty - 4-24-2011 at 06:05 PM

We buy cervesa at duty free-don't think they can stop you from taking it over the border.

Thanks, Dennis

Was it a picture of a live chicken or chicken that was processed and cut up.......................:dudette:

Trueheart - 4-25-2011 at 11:00 AM

I've crossed into Baja many times. Always heading south to BCS. Always took lots of frozen foods ... ice chests with dry ice, and they are in plain sight. Usually two big chests. Items include steaks, ribs, chicken, bacon, hamburger, pork chops, etc. all individually wrapped. Once I arrive, they go straight into a freezer without ever thawing. I've taken in cases of beer too, in plain sight in the back of my pick up. The wine I take in I put in a compartment, so it isn't visible. Usually three cases or so. And I take in a case of mixed booze also, again, not in plain sight. I also take in one cooler for refrigerated items like cheese, salami, sour cream, etc. Never got questioned about any of it. The only questions I ever got was at GN crossing into BCS and they wanted to know if I had fruits or vegetables, which I don't bring. They would casually look into the tops of the coolers just to make sure I didn't. They are more concerned with collecting the $1 for the under spray of the truck.

I do buy groceries in BCS to supplement my stuff, things like fish, milk, eggs, veggies, fruits, etc., but I like to bring my own frozen meats, beer, wine and booze and that way I'm pretty set for awhile once I arrive with things I consider tougher to get down in BCS in remote locations. Just easier for me to fill in the gaps rather than find a place to do complete shopping.

Never been questioned about any of it.

Guess maybe I shouldn't plan for my good luck to always continue?

"I've taken in cases of beer too"

Wow, why would anyone take beer INTO Mexico? The best German crafted beers are made there! (sorry I couln't resist that comment... thanks for posting)

Look guys, I used to own a liquor store, and I now have a substantial credit from which I can draw. So #1, obviously cost is a factor, as I don't have to shell out $$$ for alcohol NOB. #2, I don't really care to spend time looking for the micro's SOB that are my personal choice for consumption.

Anyway, the thread is about food and beverages that are or aren't allowed to cross into Baja. I'm still curious about what the rules actually might be, and offered simply that I've never experienced being inspected for this, nor have I had any goods removed from my truck.

DENNIS - 4-25-2011 at 01:42 PM

Where is your liquor store credit? Perhaps a bit of Nomad assistance is in order. That's what we do best.....help each other.

Puckdrop - 4-25-2011 at 02:13 PM

Oh man, this answers the long asked question of Why did the chicken cross the road? Now we all know, to get to the BAJA:lol::lol::lol:

Trueheart - 4-25-2011 at 02:18 PM

Dennis ... LOL!

Thanks for your "offer"!

I bargained for the "holy grail" on exit, so if I pace myself correctly, and assuming my doctor doesn't interfere, I should have enough to "live comfortably on" for quite some time.

And the doctor, I don't see him regularly right now. Best to keep him out of the equation for a bit.

Here is the list...

Trueheart - 4-26-2011 at 02:00 PM

Jim/Lisa:

Thanks for posting that info. After looking it over, it seems to apply to someone moving into MX (Lake Chapala Moving?) as opposed to someone traveling into MX for vacation purposes in their own vehicle. Can you or anyone comment as to this?

Thanks,

Steve

You can go on line and pick any Mexican city or town listed looking for Mexican Goverment Regulations. Just select one I just picked one at random. Just keep in mind that as of 2010 the Mexican Conso in the United States no longer will help none Mexicans. go to one of there sites ne closest to you and click on sevices for none Mexicans.

bajalearner - 4-28-2011 at 05:30 PM

Maybe the sign prohibits choking your chicken while driving.
