After shopping at Mega, I noticed that my usual grocery estimate was off by over 100 pesos. Looking at the receipt showed me that a bottle of
Presidente brandy was taxed at 53%.
Beer and wine are taxed at 25%. Ouch!
The taxes seem to be levied on the wholesale price or something, because the math still didn't add up.

I'd hazard a guess that these taxes may be part of the war on borrachos.
Mexico has long grappled with a problem of drunkeness. As part of their pro-active campaign, several years ago, they undertook a program to lower the
alcohol content in alcoholic beverages.
I'm sure many folks recall when many Mexican beers contained anywhere from 6-7% alcohol. Today, it's under 5%. Similarly, domestically produced
liquor, including tequila usually runs in the 35-37%, as opposed to the 40% standard.
So, if you go into your Mega and buy a bottle of Hornitos, it will probably contain 35% alcohol. That same brand, for export, will have 40% NOB.
Just my opinion on it.

Most shelf prices include taxes. Following the lead from US merchandisers, stores in Mexico are now going to the bare-bones price on the shelf and
adding taxes.
53% and 25% bother me. That seems excessive. Do your local homework.
On the other hand, you could consider quitting drinking 
OK...forget that one.
