tv tuned on to the wedding ?

BajaBlanca - 4-29-2011 at 11:53 AM

Just wondering, did you tune in to watch the royal wedding today ?

I thoroughly enjoyed watching it - but i am a hopeless romantic !! and my husband is a naturalized Brit, so it is closer to home for me.

DENNIS - 4-29-2011 at 12:26 PM

This thing will go on longer than Kennedy's funeral. Of course, they could break the monotony with a few web-cams in the royal bedroom. :saint:

24baja - 4-29-2011 at 12:33 PM

I was up until 4:30 this morning watching. I watched HRH Prince Charles & (she will always be HRH to me) Princess Diana, the day they brought the boys home from the hospital, the death & funeral of (HRH) Princess Diana and I am so pleased to see her sons carrying on as she would have. I know that some may think it is silly, but I feel as though they are part of the extended family. I look forward to seeing the to the next generation of Royals and to HRH Prince Harry finding his match. I was so very impressed with how calm and serene HRH Prince William and HRH Princess Katherine appeared and how the love they feel for each other shined through.

I did think that Victoria "Posh" Beckham could put a smile on her face and show some happiness towards the occaision. Too bad for her!

I wonder if HRH Prince Charles will ever become King or will abdicate......the British people seem to have changed how they feel about ( I can't bring myself to use her title, I am sorry if I offend)Camilla and that mess. I believe that HRH Prince William would better serve as King and will move the British into a new era.

It was fantastic

mcfez - 4-29-2011 at 12:58 PM

I was invited to attend by the Royal Family.

I had front row seating as you can see. I am........so special.

Think I will get some Fish n Chips once I get out of this church.

Yes, I Watched

Gypsy Jan - 4-29-2011 at 01:12 PM

Woke up and turned on the TV just as they were finishing their vows and stayed up for all the show after including Wills and Kate driving off in Da's Aston Martin convertible with the "Just Wed" sign that Harry had fixed on the boot.

Oso - 4-29-2011 at 02:51 PM

Too busy grinding broken light bulbs into my eyeballs.

Bajahowodd - 4-29-2011 at 03:35 PM

Meh.

I actually got a kck out of a bit on the Daily Show last night. Correspondent John Oliver (a Brit) did a bunch of man on the street interviews that purported to show that by and large, the Brits are totally over this monarchy thing. Biggest complaint was that given the wars being fought and that were draining treasuries, and the overall dismal state of the economy that has prompted austerity measures in Britain, the amount of money spent for this spectacle, which fundamentally comes from British taxpayers, was appallingly inappropriate.

And then there's this thing about the British royal family actually being Germans!

monoloco - 4-29-2011 at 04:01 PM

I can't even imagine why the British would watch it.

Fred Astaire, Jane Powell, Peter Lawford.

A lot better than that other stuff.

Everyday.

Or is "their" history somehow more important than the day to day life of us lowly commoners? Maybe I am out of step but I just don't get myself all worked up over this stuff. Much more pressing matters that we should be concerned with today, to say nothing of a ridiculous use of taxpayers money in these difficult times when so many there are struggling to make ends meet.

I would have had more respect for them if they had eloped and got married in a Vegas wedding chapel.

But that's just me...

Blanca................History being made ????????? I seriously doubt it.

Maybe History repeating itself again and again and again to the tune of many $$$$ pounds!

IMO (only mine) who cares ???

dtutko1 - 4-30-2011 at 06:22 AM

Hate is not the opposite of Love. Indifference is and I'm about as indifferent as a person could be about this event. I turned off any channel that was covering it. I'm wondering why I care enough to even respond to this post.

Not to mention vulgarly ostentatious for this difficult time. A bit of well publicized restraint would have gone for high PR mileage.

Yes, but the wedding generated 100's of times that in revenue for London and the country.
I am very familiar with London and enjoyed seeing the streets and landmarks.

BajaBlanca - 4-30-2011 at 08:47 AM

very interesting to read everyone's opinion on the event ... and here are some of my thoughts on the subject:

is it any less history in the making here than a president being sworn in ? Is there that much money spent on a presidential event ?? I have no idea. I think us commoners life is just as important as their life, but their life is no less important either...It was impressive to hear that they are involved in 100's of charities. which is wonderful.

things I learned about bizarre rules of royal procedure - Kate can no longer be called Kate - it must be her full name Katharine or title. she can never carry a purse. her hair must be up at all times. she can only be involved in charities and may never hold a job (one of my sons asked if he could sign up for that one)

all in all, I enjoyed living a real life fairy tale for a day.

Fairy Tales

MrBillM - 4-30-2011 at 01:45 PM

Those fascinated by Fairy Tales should come to California. Our daily news is FILLED with Fairy Tales.

Seriously, though, ANYONE who is a firm believer in the American Ideal should view Royalty with contempt and antipathy. Or, at worst, Disgusted Indifference.

Our nation was based on a rejection of the entire concept of Title and Privilege to the extent that the Constitution specified that no Titles of Nobility would be allowed.

Until the WWII period, there was still a strong Anti-Royalty mood among most Americans. It was one of the Most serious impediments to our participation in WWI and was repeated prior to our being attacked in WWII.

The Class-system resulting from a Royalty-Based society has been repugnant in the past and still should be.

Beyond that, the (economic) defense of maintaining a special-class of token Royals is like those dubious studies that purport to show how much benefit derives from having a Sports Team, a Super Bowl, etc. Filled with questionable premises and unlikely math.

Perhaps the most ignorant statement I've seen on this forum. Unless it was said in jest. Unless you have an extremely short attention span, you may wish to consider all the crap that the press put out about candidate Obama attending (for many years) the (yes) Christian church headed by Jeremiah Wright.

Whew!

Here's, at least in my mind, a very succinct assessment of what;s wrong right now. For those of you with ADD, please forward to about the two minute mark.

And what say ye to that?

DianaT - 4-30-2011 at 04:40 PM

One of my favorite quotes about royalty from the famous Thomas Paine ---

"...could we take off the dark covering of antiquity, and trace them [kings] to their rise, we should find the first of them nothing better than the principle ruffian of some restless gang, whose savage manners, or pre-eminence in subtilty obtained him the title of chief among plunderers."

And he was far more a Brit than a Colonist---he came to the colonies at the request of Ben Franklin and did not live here long.

McFez---loved your photoshop work. :lol::lol:

Attending Crazy Jerry Wright's Church was a cover.

You WOULD have thought he'd pick a better cover church, though.

After the years that I've witnessed what were seemingly over the top rants, I really have to admit that I still don't have clue as to whether you are a gifted provocateur or just a giant dirt bag. I'm leaning toward the dirt bag.

Tell me. Is it A or B?

ODD Choices ?

MrBillM - 4-30-2011 at 08:50 PM

One from column A, one from column B ?

Decisions, decisions. All depends on the Slant ?

But, we were talking about Kenyans, not Asians.

It's OK, though. Being Disliked by a Lefty is an honor to be worn proudly. If I were EVER to find myself in agreement with an ODD Loutish Legionnaire, I'd REALLY worry.

And, I don't need any more worry. The DC Moslem Mullah has me maxed out on concern.

Willam and Catherine Have Postponed the Honeymoon

Gypsy Jan - 4-30-2011 at 08:54 PM

So he can return to work.

Say what you will, but this whole magilla has been handled brilliantly.

One million people marched down the road to cheer the kisses.

Now, the couple are postponing the honeymoon so he can return to his military obligations and a domestic life without household servants.

It was a masterful piece of an state pageantry. referencing history and grounded in genuine emotion and practical public relations.

Maybe, but I still wonder what would be the difference if instead they had just eloped off to a Vegas wedding chapel. They could even have gotten Elvis to perform the ceremony...

Paula - 4-30-2011 at 10:11 PM

Being a dedicated follower of fashion, I looked at several online videos after the event, just to see what people were wearing. I was enthralled~~ captivated, fascinated, entertained, moved and carried away for half an hour from the sadder events of the day. The royals inspire us, expensive addiction that they are, and we Americans don't have to pay a dime of our ever-so-precious tax money! Long live the prince! And the princess! And all of their friends and relations!

And to remind up that they are all just folks like you and me, watch "The King's Speech". Human, touching. Amazing.
