Truck breakdown - any inexpensive hotels in Los Barriles?

standingwave - 5-1-2011 at 07:11 AM

We're vehicleless after discovering yesterday that the right rear axle, bearing and seal need to be replaced (& the oil contaminated brake shoes...). :(
At the moment we're staying at the Hotel Los Barriles, at 1200 pesos a night it has me looking around for an alternative...we may be here for awhile.

Osprey - 5-1-2011 at 07:32 AM

Hotel Calafia in Buena Vista (adjacent to Los Barriles to the south) might be a shot if you can call them or get a ride over there. They have a nice restaurant as well.

woody with a view - 5-1-2011 at 07:54 AM

find out why it failed. on my truck the rear diff breather gets plugged and blows a seal and ruins brake pads.

good luck!

BajaBlanca - 5-1-2011 at 08:31 AM

good luck ...what a huge bummer. I would ask the workers at your hotel and also, believe it ornot, the MOTELS or AUTO HOTELS right outside of town are usually much more inexpensive - to the tune of 300 pesos a night. spotlessly clean. safe. and usually very quiet. again - we wish you the best of luck in getting your wheels back real fast.

??? Last time amigos stayed there it was like $55 / night ??
Ask around re Hotel Pescadoro (sp) in btwn the two arroyos north of downtown ... or Hotel Azteca!
suerte

bajafreaks - 5-1-2011 at 10:20 AM

I've stayed at the L.B. Hotel a few times and never paid that much ??? There are some little "yurt" type rooms near spa buena vista that are very reasonable. Good luck... you could be stranded in alot worse places.

shari - 5-1-2011 at 11:17 AM

dang, that really sucks amigo...that poor truck has been getting you to all those secret surf spots though!!! hey, maybe there is a nomad in that area who might put you up....I can vouch for my bud Ken...he cooks and does dishes!!! best damn potato pancakes in the world and excellent company!

Bill Collector - 5-1-2011 at 11:20 AM

Go across the street, to the South and check out Martin Verdugo"s..

bajamigo - 5-1-2011 at 11:31 AM

S-wave, isn't it a giant pain in the a$$ to be vehicle-deprived? I hope you're closer to civilization than we are!

Just what I was going to say

gnukid - 5-1-2011 at 01:30 PM

Also, Lil 'Chico' Martine who lives on the entrance road just up from Chapitos on the same side, he has rooms and they are inexpensive and rustic. It has a little palapa out front and a driveway that goes down into a dirt yard. lil Martine is Martin Verdugo's old bartender.

Eli - 5-1-2011 at 01:30 PM

I think Little Martin has rooms w/bathroom for around $350 pesos a night. I have never actually checked them out. It is tucked back a little on the main entry road into town, just down a little ways from Plaza de Pueblo on the same side of the road. Easy walking every where you have to go in town from there.

woody with a view - 5-1-2011 at 01:35 PM

WOW! lotta good advise.

Osprey - 5-1-2011 at 01:44 PM

Woody, that's what I was trying to say on a previous post about how the forum can help. Where else would the guy seeking help get that kind of first hand info. Nowhere! Viva Nomads.

BajaBlanca - 5-1-2011 at 02:07 PM

Viva Nomads !!

windgrrl - 5-1-2011 at 02:12 PM

Maybe consider a home rental?

VRBO website has a few that offer per night rentals or maybe check the local rental property management offices.

If all else fails...you can construct a palapa or lean-to camp on the beach (near North Beach) for free!

Yup - you could head out to North Beach and maybe score a vacant Palapa or rent borrow or buy a tent from some of the folks free camping out there.

You're IN the perfect spot regarding your circumstances.
Your just paying twice the normal rate. (????) Sure that wasn't for two nights?

tiotomasbcs - 5-1-2011 at 05:22 PM

These are the Adventures that make The Baja Experience! I always remember the breakdowns over the regular visits?! Now I know all the local info regarding economical hotel/pensiones in LB. You can hang out in the abandoned 2nd Arroyo palaps left over from wind/air winter events. Vacant beach palapas, Yurts, Bartender diggs. Hemmingway still lives!:O Hope the repairs/parts are made withn a week! If not, send for reinforcements!! Sale Tio

Hotel Los Pescadores 624-121-8786 Patti is the owner of this new hotel - all new furnishings and a great bar. Inexpensive.

Eli - 5-2-2011 at 06:08 AM

See Shari, You are right, I would not have even guessed. I haven't been at the gallery much as of late. Ken, are you still in here? Was that you that tried to call me a week ago at home? I will be at the gallery Tues. about noon until 3 p.m., please try to call me again if you can.

Not sure where your truck is being repaired, but, on the highway next to one of the repair places, Banana's, is the Cactus Restaurant and Jose the owner has a motel just behind. Great inexpensive food and walking distance to where your repairs are being done. I think he rents the rooms for 300 pesos a night, I am sure you can get a rate for a week.

Great lead!! Jose is THE man!!

Success!

standingwave - 5-2-2011 at 09:42 AM

The truck is repaired (much to my surprise and pleasure - I thought this was going to take much longer) and we're on the road again. Next stop, El Chorro for a soak in the hot springs, then on to Playa Higuera near Nine Palms for some surfing.
