High Court Spanks Carlos Slim

LancairDriver - 5-4-2011 at 02:01 PM

In a move that could bring more competition to the Mexican cell phone business, the Mexican Supreme Court in a 6-4 ruling will force TelCel to sharply reduce their rates charged rivals to use it's networks. TelCel was slapped with a one billion dollar fine for putting the squeeze on rivals for exorbitant interconnection rates. The move should put smaller rivals in a more competitive posture. TelCel has a 66 million user base.
This will barely put a ripple in Slim's 82 billion dollar fortune, made largely by the telecommunication business.

I heard that Mexico's rates are the highest in the world.

Slim deserves more than a slap. but at least it is a start and sends him a message.....maybe.

Telhell could definitely use some competition.

On one level, I admire Slim, in that he really is a self-made man. You can read his bio that shows his parents were Lebanese immigrants to Mexico, and that he actually drove a cab in Mexico City when he was young.

And, he heads several huge charity foundations.

But, as folks such as Bill Gates have come to realize, you can't take it with you.

In my opinion, it is beyond the time that Slim, with his obscene wealth, give something back.

Without appearing to be a socialist, why couldn't Slim, at this point in his life, just give away bandwith to eager competitors? After all, given the charity work he has done, such a move would serve to cement his legacy.

If Slim's gonna donate assets to charity I 'd like him to start with giving Hershey Chocolate back to the people of Hershey, PA... ;)

We always get dinged 40-60 pesos each phone bill for making/taking calls to cell phones. Vonage has a new $55/month plan with unlimited landline calls to 80 countries and unlimited calls to cell phones in 40 countries- including Mexico. The 40-60 pesos works for me...

Good idea, but I don't think Slim collects money because of what it can do for him. It is not about the intrinsic value of money--he just has a pathological obsession to collect it. You can't expect altruism from that type.
