My Prescription Badly Needed --- Mulege

Hi Y'All,
From out of the blue my #4 lumbar disc herniated very badly (worse) and has left me in agony. I found a walker and can hobble around 20 feet then collapse. I am pretty savvy about this problem and I am taking NSAIDS, and the strongest medication in Mexico but it isn't working. The med is called TYLEX a controlled medicine and is a 30mg. Codeine / 625 mg. Tylenol preparation. I have taken THREE capsules at a time with little if any effect. This is a "flagship" medication so it isn't bogus. TYLEX costs SIX HUNDRED PESOS for 30 capsules plus it needs a new Rx every fill which costs another several hundred pesos. It is breaking my social security piggybank.

I do have medical coverage in California. I just have jumped through several hoops and a triplicate Rx is being mailed to my "local" CVS Pharmacy there. I can have that Rx TRANSFERRED to ANY CVS pharmacy.

Now the trick is to get the med from "any" CVS Pharmacy to me, here in Mulege. I need a courier and within reason, the sooner the better. The med center is mailing it and I would guess that it will take three or four days before my "local" pharmacy gets it hands on it.

Is there any kind soul BAJANOMAD out there that is planning on driving down say from the 8th of May, onward? I am easy to find in Mulege and the prescription is pre-paid --- not a cent needed when it is picked up.

This would not work too good unless the kind soul had a local CVS pharmacy (nearby).

I realize that this is grasping at straws, but thanks in advance. The pain of this disc is a solid "9". I have trouble sleeping more than a couple hours at a time, cannot prepare food, have placed a chair to sit in in the shower and generally am gritting my teeth.

SECONDLY...

If someone needs a RIDE, NORTHBOUND from Mulege to as far as the San Francisco east bay area on the THIRD OF JUNE, I am offering one. All I ask is that they be of reasonable character and have the means to secure their own (most) economical room at Baja Cactus in El Rosario, and then optionally at BUTTONWILLOW on I-5. I pay all car expenses. The rider should have the ability to drive in order to spell me. No night driving in Mexico. I would ask them to fill the tank at the gas stations in the USA, and help me wheel in a small suitcase at the hotel(s).

Now all I can do is pray... Thank you.

1. It is illegal for anyone to bring a controlled substance into Mexico, even with a prescription, unless the prescription is for the person who is carrying it. You are asking somebody to risk years in a Mexican jail.

2. If you cannot walk more than 20 feet and you took 3 pills with 30 mg Codeine and it had no effect, you need immediate medical attention, probably surgery to repair your disk or fuse the vertebrae. Since you have medicare, you need to get your burro up NOB immediately. You should leave today.

As your doctor, I recommend that you take the strongest pills you can scrounge with massive amounts of tequila.

The chances of being ASKED about this are between ZERO and ludicrous.

I am TRYING to get to a facility which is SIX HUNDRED MILES distant. This would mean driving, or going 84 miles to Loreto, then taking an airflight, WALKING through customs with BAGGAGE, then catching a SECOND airflight with associated hobbling.

Even under the effects of a narcotic I am hard-pressed to believe your comments are serious. I have repeatedly mused every single scenario and permutation and have arrived at the only one that makes any sense.

BTW, it is also illegal according to a 130-year old law still on the books to shoot ducks from a moving streetcar in Pensacola, Florida. Have a nice day

Shes actually correct. That medication is a controlled substance in Mexico, and having it in your possesion without the proper permits, could land you in a lot of trouble.

How the hell is anyone going to "stumble across" an object smaller than a roll of dimes? The PFP, SSP, marinas, ADUANA and ejercito look for non Rx prescriptions, meaning large bulk medications, boxes of them, packages of meth, heroin, and mota. They do not EVER audit individual bottles of medication. ANYWHERE IN MEXICO. Not in my last 47 years of travel and living here. NEVER has been a long time. NEVER has been a lot of years.

Got any other tidbits that are irrelavent and serve to cloud an issue?

David, i sympathize with your situation, but just because you never been audited when traveling with these medications, it doesnt mean they are legal to carry around for someone who doesn't have a prescription. Now, if someone wants to do it, thats fine with me, but the should be aware of the potential implications of doing it. Don't you think thats fair?

david....i have almost the exact same condition and there is a medication available in the pharmacy across the counter that will work better than what you are taking now...i have purchased it many times at diegos place across the street from el candil..it's called Tramadol and it really really works...it comes in 50 and 100 mg...i take two 100s twice a day and am for the most part, pain free....give it a shot. m.

That's what Ged took and was able to ride his motorcycle and hobble around for 5 days on a broken leg......dt

many people thought the same thing about transporting high grade coke or heroin, or even personal-use pot, before they got a few years in a mexican prison.

Gotcha about Tramadol and I'll try it.

There is a heck of a difference between a head's-up that starts out with something like "Just be aware that..." rather than ominous doomsday proclamations of hellfire and brimstone. Most folks wouldn't travel Mexico with a class II opiate medication velcro'd to the roof of their vehicle for all to see.

I'd do it for someone in a heartbeat and I would worry about a collision with low flying buzzards a hell of a lot more than having an unprecented shakedown to-the-frame highway inspection. Maybe it's because I have spent more than 20 of the last 40 years of my life down here.
Get it straight: NO ONE, no cop would pause 10 seconds and read an Rx label unless you ran up to a cop clutching the bottle and shouted. "Es medicina controlado y no es mio ni nuestros!"

Coming northbound, at CBP, US Customs, it is a horse of a whole different color. It is SPECIFICALLY declared that NO MEDICATIONS of any type can pass unless they are for use by the specific person declaring them. The chances of a non-declared Rx being discovered at US Customs is very real and it would be foolish to try and pass the medication without declaration. Notice above where I said VERY real. Talking apples and oranges.

Good luck David! Hopefully Tramadol can help until you can get up to San Diego! Airstream Willy at Cuesta Real was looking for a courier to bring a camera?! Maybe... Tramadol certainly took the edge off my pain with a broken fibula and it didn't seem to make me feel or act any stupider than I am normally....and no prescription was needed.

I also suffer from periodic low lumbar trauma and would also follow the advice offered above to get good medical attention once you can get yourself north.


And, David....that was 10 days, not five :biggrin:

You were obviously under the influence of the Tramadol if you think that you weren't acting stupider than usual.....that said, I guess I really don't know how stupid you can act and still consider it normal.....

Les had major back pain and ended up operating - Until we reached the hospital, the only thing that worked (mind you, he even tried morphine) was tylenol 750 mg. Just double up til you reach that number ....

I hear your pain, and hope you get better soon.
