A DIFFERENT TYPE OF MOTHERS DAY

DENNIS - 5-9-2011 at 12:00 PM

I have a photography book by Graciela Iturbide, a premier Mexican photographer, on this subject and thought it interesting.
Hope you do as well. [I know...not Baja]

Fascinating Look at a Different Culture

Gypsy Jan - 5-9-2011 at 05:48 PM

Thanks, Dennis, what a great, interesting and informative article.

I am sitting here trying to recall an episode on TV that I watched (maybe it was "Bizarre Foods"), maybe in Columbia, where the women were exclusively the wrestlers in Luche Libre exhibitions.

Sounds a lot like Roller Derby.

Here is a link to the New York Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/21/international/americas/21b...

I think that you do not want to insult them.

"Fighting Cholitas"

Thanks, Jan. It's a weird weird world out there.

In Oaxaca City I have met a few women from Jucitan and bought their beautiful embroidered Huipal tops. It is true, they are of amazing strong character and grand statue and their perspective on life does differ from most. To have a gay son is actually considered by a Jucitan Mother to be advantageous as he will stay home and take care of her.

What???

That's ABSURD.

Not as absurd as you might think. I know a few gay men in La Paz who fit this description (my wife's a hair stylist, a profession in which gays are well-represented). Mothers have, traditionally, been much more accepting of the gay gene than have fathers.

Too bad we don't have that type of deal going up north. I've a gay son, too, and haven't taken the time to properly plan for my retirement.

Do you mean by that you haven't fully come to terms with the issue of your son being gay?
'Splain please.

Jewish mother's delimma

Dave - 5-16-2011 at 11:41 AM

Son's gay but dating a doctor. ;D

Eli - 5-16-2011 at 05:15 PM

I agree that the concept of a gay guy staying home to take care of his Mom is absurd, but belief in tradition is strong in their community, so I expect that many (but not all) do.
I do think that any belief system that permits a parent to embrace their child's sexual preference is good for the family and their community.

Love the Jewish Mother's dilemma, cute joke, classic.

Gawd, no. I knew he was gay before he was willing to admit it to himself. That is one of the things he has always been most proud of; that I, unlike the fathers of most of his gay friends, have always accepted and loved him just as he was created.

What I was making reference to was Eli's comment about the native Oaxacan women who hope their gay sons will stay home and care for them in their old age. But you knew that since you have taken what I said out of context. I see signs that we're slowly getting our old, mean, nasty-tempered, foul-mouthed DENNIS back. Good. I was getting rather tired of this nice person pretending to be you.

Damn, Eli, I'm trying to stick up for ya, but you make it hard!

Geez. We are talking about different cultures here. I find it the opposite of absurd that a woman from a culture so different than the American version of Judeo-Christian would welcome having a son they loved and would be there to take care of them. Fundamentally, I see little difference between such a thing and the extended families that we find in current US culture simply because wealth has been hijacked by a few.
Just wish our culture could get beyond the homophobe thing. Gays have been written about throughout history. It's not some new thing resulting from fluoride in our toothpaste. Folks need to get over it and move on.

Oso - 5-17-2011 at 04:17 PM

Many years ago I visited Juchitan and a great beach called La Ventosa. I remember the women being on average taller than the men. They ran all the businesses and held all the local political offices. The duties of the men seemed to consist of playing guitar and making babies. The women were known by a Zapotec name I can't remember but it wasn't Juchiteca. I bought a great hamaca matrimonial from one. I remember many of them as quite handsome, wearing a couple thousand in gold and barefoot.

I remembered one word from a song; Sandunga. But that's not the one I'm looking for. I've been to google to no avail.

I didn't take anything out of context. To me, your context was indecipherable, so I asked.

So much for celebrating diversity.

Los Tehuana's are often big, stong, beautiful don't mess with um type Women. Tripper, I know you were trying to help me, and I thank you for it. It is simply that I realized I had generalized and created a blanket statment and when Dave called me on it, I felt I need to aknowledge that. I should have said that the Women OFTEN believe this, and it is part of their culture to believe it, and does OFTEN occur in thier culture that the Gay men stay home to take care of their Mothers. This doesn't mean that belief always pans out. It's like Oso said, Women run the business and the Men's principal purpose is reproduction, but of course there are always exceptions.
It is kind of like saying all Jewish people are good businessmen, or all Italins are good cooks, etc., ect., often are, as their tradition presents opportunity, but we can never assume our children will take a certain path because of our beliefs.
