BAJACAT - 5-22-2011 at 02:43 PM

AS manny of you know, I will heading to Gonzaga Bay for memorial day.One of the people just drop from the trip because a friend of a friend toll him that he just come from the SF area and said that somebody was pick up while in the beach by a commando, he didn say where the beach or campo is located, can some of you SF full time residents tell me if you have heard anything realted to this. Baja is as dangerous as you wanted to be.Be safe friends and stay alive...

Bajaboy - 5-22-2011 at 04:15 PM

I fear I have a few more weeks until I can go to Baja

bajalou - 5-22-2011 at 04:18 PM

Not in Baja now, but haven't heard of anything from friends that are there.

krafty - 5-22-2011 at 04:40 PM

Bajacat, we have friends that have been visiting for a week from NY and they had never been here before. They had many concerns relating to safety as well due to what everyone was telling them. We have had a worry free week and their only complaint was the weather-had a great time and will now visit often! As long as you all pack your common sense while traveling, all will be well.

woody with a view - 5-22-2011 at 07:11 PM

you have to be a nut to not entertain the thought of cartel/tweeker violence while in baja. that said, for me anyway, i usually leave it in the rear view mirror around Maneadero or Santo Tomas.

surfdoc - 5-22-2011 at 07:21 PM

Wow............I'm just the opposite. I start looking in my rear view window once I cross back north..

BTW........anyone coming to Asuncion for Mem day ?? My daughter has a Box for me..:D

Outstanding Woody...thanks !

BajaGringo - 5-22-2011 at 07:58 PM

I have been through this a couple of times over the years and have simply stopped trying to convince people that they should come down. If somebody tells me they're too scared, I just shrug my shoulders and invite somebody else. I have too many good friends and family that love coming down here to waste my time on the few who think this is Beirut back in the 80's with rooftop snipers...

BAJACAT - 5-22-2011 at 08:02 PM

What Woody said.
I can force them to go, but I will prove them wrong when I get back all happy and stress free from Baja.
New plans for trip, since only 2 cars are going we will leave friday morning with Lunch and refuel in SF,a short visit to BajaWarrior's house. Then on to Gonzaga Bay (campo Beluga),stay Friday Saturday and leave Sunday by noon to spend Sunday night in SF so I can have Dinner at El Nido for my B-day May 28th,a walk in the malecon afterwards,Monday morning hit the road to cross at TECATE.. pretty basic.
I will make a sidetrip to Coco's Corner on Saturday and maybe la Turquesa if I can find it, I think is close to Coco's place...

Bajafun777 - 5-22-2011 at 08:04 PM

BajaCat, I have a similar problem in that a relative that was going to visit us in July backed out. They heard that a Preacher and his assistant was killed at church in Rosarito. Told them I had not heard of anything like that happening and hopefully it is not. To think someone would take a live is bad enough but inside a Church would just show how much of a low crawling animal they are. Can't stop the rumors and like always some of these stories are true unfortunately. Every day is a risk and adventure but hiding is just a short trip to total BOREDOM!! Jim/Liisa - 5-22-2011 at 08:07 PM

Have a happy Bajacat, mines the 27TH.:D

Curt63 - 5-22-2011 at 08:11 PM

I get the same thing too. Honestly, some off the offroading my boyz do is way more dangerous than Baja. Numerous serious injuries broken equipment etc.

Also, the crap some of friends eat is a sure death sentence (heart attacks).

I would rather die in a firefight or driving off a cliff than dying a slow miserable death from an illness.

I just torture the nay sayers with great trip report E-mails full of pics.

I do wish the tourism would pick to help the Mexican citizens.

BAJACAT - 5-22-2011 at 08:15 PM

Jim/Liisa, my son's B-day is May 4 my Mom's is May 20,My brother May 21, My two niece's may 27 me May 28 and my sister may 29...Gemmini's rule...

I have the GPS waypoints, if you have a GPS. The road to La Turquesa Canyon is about 3 miles north of the site of Las Arrastras (a wide clearing overlooking the arroyo (about 3 1/2 miles north of Coco's Corner)...

Map Datum is NAD27 Mexico:

Green Pools, La Turquesa Canyon: 29°33.72'/ 114°23.89'

Las Arrastras driveway: 29°32.96'/ 114°20.35'

Coco's Corner: 29°31.00'/ 114°17.42'

On the 2003 Almanac, see the road shown as a trail just north of Las Arrastras going off the left edge of the map:

Have fun doing so... The road looks like it ends by the green pools as it drives on top of a giant rock floor... but you can keep driving up the arroyo. The turquoise mine is the hole you see up on your right, a ways west of the pools... and the grade on the far away mountainside... that only Roy 'The Squarecircle' has driven all the way from Hwy. 5 to Hwy. 1 here!

trouble deciphering your english (perhaps you can clarify your story, or write it in spanish?), but if the story is real, that military attacked someone, seems prudent for people to worry.

First mistake

Why do you tell everyone where you are going?
You may get some nut case on here that will hunt you down just to mess with you? I'm not paranoid, but I never tell anyone on here where and when I am going.

For example this weekend we are leaving Phx and crossing the border at about 5pm. Going to our casa for a bit and then spending some time at Shell Beach, but I would never let anyone know that!

When I lead a 4WD event/run through Baja, I always post the when/where on-line. Why? Because, people want to know where the Jeeps will go off-road.

David K - 5-23-2011 at 05:33 PM

It is a long drive from San Felipe to "Shell Beach" (that's next to Punta Chivato near Mulege)!

I bet you are refering to Shell Island... ? No confusing where that is... :light:

(actually, I know a lot of local gringos who have come to the region in recent years have called it Shell Beach, as well... )

Have a nice day on the island!

Goat, my brother inlaw was going to go with me to Gonzaga, but his best friend toll him that a friend of his went to Sf and that he was told by someone that a commando(bad guys not military )pick somebody in one of the SF beaches, do details of where this beach is located..so therefore I think is a rummor,

4 Found Dead In 100 Block Of Parkcreek Court In Bay Terraces

UPDATED: 11:23 am PDT May 24, 2011

SAN DIEGO -- Four people found dead at a home in the 100 block of Parkcreek Court in the Bay Terraces area were identified as a family by friends and relatives Tuesday.

» Sign Up For Breaking News Alerts
A man, woman, and a girl were found dead in a backyard pool at the residence and the body of another woman was found in a bathtub inside the home. All four appeared to have drowned, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Maurice Luque said.

Friends and relatives who showed up at the scene told 10News reporter Melissa Mecija, that the deceased are all members of the same family, the Pimientas: Alfredo and Georgina Pimienta and their daughters Priscilla -- a 17-year-old senior at High Tech High -- and Emily, a 7- to 9-year-old.

Those close to the family said there were no signs anything was wrong.

Authorities responded to the scene before 7:00 a.m. Tuesday and a homicide team was called to the location by police.

The view from Sky10 showed three bodies covered by tarps near a pool behind the home.

Good point doc. So, if your name is Pimienta and belong to a family that is part of a murder-suicide pact, you should avoid San Diego as Mexico would be safer.

I like you doc, you really know how to drill-in to the core of the issue on Mexican safety. Now grab another beer and sit back down. You must be tired from all that thinking.

surfdoc - 5-24-2011 at 01:45 PM

Jenny Jenny Jenny.............you must be a blonde..??

My point is, equating this crime in San Diego as making it Unsafe to travel to SoCal/SD is the same as saying a Cartel hit in Nogales makes it unsafe to travel to La Paz.

But I'm thru..... if you don't have the common sense to understand the difference, or to figure out how to travel safely from the borders to your destination, well maybe you just don't belong in Baja.

I'm thru trying to convince people of the safety... and you are right... all this thinking is tireing.

So I'll go get that Tecate, and sit back and watch the dolphin swim thru the bahia.

JoeJustJoe - 5-24-2011 at 01:45 PM

According to Mexico's President Felipe Calderon, Mexico is a very safe place to visit for American tourists. Calderon also said in another article that, The Only Shots Tourists Receive in Mexico are Tequila Shots." Amen to that.

I agree while Mexican drug cartel violence is off the charts mainly because of Calderon's drug cartel policies of waging war against the drug cartels. The fact is American tourist deaths in Mexico are very light, and if the American tourists themselves aren't involved in illegal activity with the drug cartels.....then you can probably count the deaths of American tourists on one hand. ( you might have to exclude the car accidents, and tourists being ran over. You might want to exclude the health problems too of older Americans dying in Mexico before you get out your fingers and start counting.)

On a more regional note. Mayor Carlos Bustamante of Tijuana was saying that Tijuana is no longer a violent city and has become a mature and civilized city, but he was talking about the recent soccer games in Tijuana, where despite thousands of fan, only 48 incidents were reported, and only about five people went before the Tijuana judge.

Mexico prez says country 'safe to visit'

LAS VEGAS, May 20 (UPI) -- Mexico's president declared his country is "a safe place to visit" despite ongoing accounts of bloody drug cartel wars.

In an interview with CBS at the Global Travel and Tourism Summit at the Aria hotel in Las Vegas Thursday, President Felipe Calderon said he wants Mexico to become one of the top 5 international tourist destinations by 2020.

"you could count on your fingers" the number of drug-related events involving tourists in Mexico.

BajaCat,
Went down there mid April, stayed at Papa Fernandez'.
Everything was great, all the way. ALL the check points - totally friendly.
We crossed the check point between Papa's and Rancho Grande store almost Daily (we need lots of... um ... ice?)
These guys were relaxed, friendly, and professional, as usual... In direct contrast to what we find meets us at our 2 north of Border check points home.
If you are worried any about camping safety, Cruz knows of everybody who passes his gate to enter the Papa Fernandez property/campground.
Also, If you like fishing, you are in a better place than BeLuGa.(my experience)
-GRoUper
ps: there Is a New Border crossing a few miles east of the original Mexicali/Calexico crossing... Heading home it was 25min when we crossed (mid-week around 3pm)

You're absolutely correct, doc. It makes much more sense to compare apples-to-apples. So, then, if you wanted to point out the crime in San Diego as compared to where you are, you would then make your point by comparing the two places. I can do that.

Let's see, the current homicide rate in the city of San Diego is 2.0 per 100,000 people. There's no reports on that sand spit you are hanging out at, but the entire state of Baja California Sur, where La Paz is, has a homicide rate of 10.4 per 100,000 people this year.

I don't know about you, doc, but that looks like where you are has 5 times the murder rate as San Diego. By the way, BCS has only one-half the population of the city of San Diego. What do you think? Is that a fair apples-to-apples comparison?

While you are contemplating all that, and being that you are an expert on all things Mexican, why don't you read this and learn about what is happening right under your nose down there.

I am on another van travel forum also. There was a woman and her husband three months ago that wanted to see Baja but were frightened after the responses they received (mostly from forum members in Arizona that were reading the news and have NEVER been in any part of Mexico).

Someone referred them to me. I told them of my experiences off forum. I was just leaving for Baja Sur and I go Tecate then the SOC side and hook-up with the hwy after Coco's. They were in a Roadtrek and did not have the ground clearance of my vehicle so I suggested they cross at Tecate and make El Rosario the first night.

They just returned and are singing the praises of Baja after two and half-months of happy, trouble free travel and camping among wonderful people.

If someone does not want to go say, "Adios Ese", "catch you later and hasta la bye-bye", leave it for the rest of us.

I have been traveling in Baja for 15 years. Woody said it best (paraphrasing) - you would be an idiot not to consider the dangers of traveling there. Any OBJECTIVE observation of the news will tell you that things have gotten more dangerous. Is it enough not to go? Or classify it as "REALLY" dangerous? Those are subjective evaluations. But comparing safety on the road south of the border to what happens in San Diego, or some parts of L.A. is ... silly. It's not a religion - it's Baja, a trip, a vacation.

P.S. I still go. I have a place well south of San Felipe. I love it. But I AM also more careful because there IS more danger.

BajaGringo - 5-24-2011 at 07:45 PM

Lots of places have higher murder rates than San Diego or the USA in general. The USA has a higher murder rate than many other countries. Israel has a murder rate of something like only 2 per 100K yet many people do not feel safe traveling there right now because of the potential for violence where most of the victims are random targets on buses and in public places.

At some point you just evaluate the risks and make up your own mind where you are comfortable going and accept that others may not share your opinion...

It's a process

From what I gather, no part of The Baja is safe. This innocent angel was walking home while talking to her mother on her cell phone, she told her mother that a van was following her. She never made it home, unfortunately none of the media has published this intil 7 months after the incident. God help this angel.

As an old Timer{Since 1967} when I made my first trip in my Airpplane to Baja Sur, I have Never, Never, been in Fear.

I flew in and out of Baja Sur over the years aquiring approx. 2,000 Hours of Flying time,

I set up a Mexican Corp. and bought and Sold Proerty.
I built and lived at Rancho Sonrisa in Loreto full time for 16 years.

I put 167,000 miles on a 93 Cherokee Grand the last ten years before I left .

I and my Wife got excellent medical Care from the Doctors and Hospitals.

The only FEAR {or should I say awarness} that I had those many years and trips was on the LOS ANGELES FREEWAY when the Freeway shooters were active. As a precaution I started going through Pasadena then through Tecate.

If you have FEAR then stay at Home and keep your Mouth shout about something you know nothing about!!

I laugh when I see posts like the one above as it's proof Baja isn't safe for anybody.

From what I gather Southern California isn't safe either when white guy John Gardner was on the loose looking for young white teen girls he could savagely rape and then kill. And although Gardner is behind bars probably for good now. There are many out there just like him. Just take a look on the "Megan's Law," or the "Registered Offenders list." You'll probably have somebody from that list not to far away from you. Does that mean people shouldn't visit you if somebody from that "Megan's" list lives close to you?

I know I would never move to Poway, CA. It's probably too dangerous and that's where Chelsea King was from. I hear lots of sick insane people live in Poway too:
________________________________

John Albert Gardner III (born April 9, 1979) is an American convicted double murderer and sex offender.[1] He confessed to the rape and murder of 14-year-old Amber Dubois from Escondido, California,[2][3][4] the February 2010 rape and murder of 17-year-old Chelsea King from Poway, CA. Additionally, he attempted to rape Candice Moncayo of San Diego County, and had been previously incarcerated for the molestation of a 13-year-old girl.[5]
____________________________________________

Poor Amber Dubois the innocent angel. I wonder what went through Amber's head before she was killed by an American sick child molester killer the US authorities knew about but yet allowed to walk the streets in search of their next victim.

Do you think Mexico should put out a warning in Mexico warning about the dangers of visiting the US espeically if you have young daughters? Should we all move out of California and the US because of these serious incidents?
________________________________

THE DETAILS

On February 13, 2009, Amber Dubois (age 14) disappeared while walking from her home in Escondido, California, to her nearby high school. At approximately 7:10 a.m., someone saw Amber walking hurriedly toward her school in the direction of the school's athletic practice field. Shortly thereafter, Amber was seen walking about a block further at a normal pace. She was in the company of an unknown male. It is possible that this male may have been the last person to see Amber before her disappearance.

Additionally, there was a red pickup truck that pulled into a parking lot on the school grounds near where Amber was last seen. This truck was parked only for several minutes before leaving the area. Law enforcement is interested in interviewing the driver of the truck.

The truck is described as a newer model, possibly a Ford, GMC, or Toyota, with chrome both above and below the grill. The vehicle is a full size, four-door crew cab pickup truck, red or maroon in color. The truck has chrome wheels and running boards and may be equipped with chrome rails or capsalong top of the bed sides. The truck may also have a fifth-wheel trailer hitch.

Ok Skeeter, just keep going down there and cross breeding creatures that I'm sure YOU know nothing about. I don't care who says what, we don't have kidnappings (except for Phoenix AZ.)and beheadings, massive prison breaks, corrupt police and authorities unwilling to solve murders nob. Mexico is a failed state, unfortunately the government has done a very good job at keeping the poor people poor and unable to aquire arms to defend themselves. Now as for your hostility toward me, I simply comented about an article that was brought to my attention by a co-worker, hopefully this article can raise awareness of this child's dissapearance and maybe she can be reunited with her parents, whom I can't begin to imagine their pain.

Next was learning to "Read" People.

Welcome Aboard.

paranewbi - 5-25-2011 at 04:04 PM

I can remember coming home from work, flipping on the tube and seeing our ex-mayor who had an afternoon show asking the chief of police here in San Diego, "what should a citizen do when driving in the city"? The police chief responded, "they should keep their doors locked, leave space between them and the car in front for escape room and if someone approaches their car they should leave immediately". This addressing the carjacking situation.

We were in San Felipe 2 days ago and it was terrible...fearful...all of these little kids screaming through the streets on Quads with big smiles on their faces!!! All of the motorists, walkers and cops just gave way and went on their way. Funny, we don't even let our kids walk to school anymore.

Traveled Baja, Mex and Central America since the 70's. Put about 250,000 miles on the roads between Panama and my front door in that time ('71 vw bus). In Nicaragua and El Salvador during the Reagon wars, surfing. Got back 48 hours ago from Baja. yep, shakin in my boots.

Easy-peasy to "gather" all types of info these days.

How'd that 'Rapture' thingy go? :?:

BAJACAT - 5-25-2011 at 06:56 PM

come on guys, danger is everywhere, Baja never the less. You just have to be smart about, no night driving,no picking up strangers in the rd(that sucks it maybe a nomad in distress, you never know). On my last trip to SF, we where having some tacos on the outside of Mexicali, and a guy walk to me and ask me if I was going to San Felipe, he wanted a right, I told him that My truck was full and I could do it(off course I lie)...
I don't have a problem with my trip, my sister and brother inlaw do, so thats why they are not going..Just me and my little sis..

While you are contemplating all that, and being that you are an expert on all things Mexican, why don't you read this and learn about what is happening right under your nose down there.

shari - 5-26-2011 at 07:41 AM

while baja sure aint what it used to be...it is still a relatively safe paradise. Many good points have been made here on both sides of the issue. Due diligence is necessary anywhere you travel but thinking about safety and reflecting on the village life here, I wouldnt trade baja for anywhere else.

As mentioned our children walk to school unaccompanied and nobody worries, no metal detectors in the school...you even see teachers walking hand in hand with students which I find lovely...people dont lock their doors or cars and leave stuff outside all the time. Kids run around the streets after dark...I wouldnt think twice about walking home at midnight alone... I dont think anyone has a security system here.

but I do agree with the point about not telling the world your travel plans in detail on a public forum...trip reports after the fact are great but to be safer...dont give the bad guys a chance to screw with you...there are alot of crazies out there....watch your back.

I personally love all of the "fear-mongers" that won't go to Baja! It makes it a lot less crowded for the people that do go down. I do however feel bad for the Mexican people that need the tourism dollars.

I constantly have people telling me how dangerous Mexico is and that I am crazy for going down there. Of course, it is always from people that have never stepped a foot in Mexico and beleive all of the media BS. It's funny to me how these people believe that they are totally safe here in the states and think that nothing can happen to them north of the border! I've heard more gunshots in the city where I work than I have ever heard anywhere in Mexico. Bad things can happen anywhere....

Preach on, Pacifico!

Thing is, in the states where we live, we know where not to go. In Mexico, Baja, we may not be aware of where we don't belong. We unknowingly raise the risk factor.

One day a long time ago, when I lived in Memphis, Tenn, I was lost while riding my motorcylce in "the wrong side of town."

I pulled over to ask an older gentleman walking down the sidewalk which way was it to the freeway. But before I could utter a word, the man said to me "Mister, I don't know where you're going, but you're heading the wrong way." I took that to mean I needed to hang a u-turn as the answer to my unasked question.

Times are changing

skipowell - 5-28-2011 at 01:37 PM

Just got back from going into town (Rosarito) certainly looks a lot different from the previous year. At our favorite taco stand on the North End of town we counted 6 gringos while we ate.
Traffic was heavy through out town didn't go all the way to the hotel so not sure what activity is going on down there but saw lots of California plates.
As much as I want the locals to have work I am going to miss the quiet days if this continues.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-28-2011 at 04:46 PM

One time a song time ago when I lived in Memphis Tenn.{ Going to naval Aviation School at Millington} i went as often as possible to Beale Street to listen to Jerry Lee Lewis singing "there's a Whole lot of Shakin Going On"

I watched as the Buses came in and picked up , mostly Black Folks, to take to the Cotton Fields to Pick Cotton, You were told :"Don;t go into the area off of Beale Street!! They don;t like "White Folks"!!

It is the same in Tj. Dont' go into the Bad Mexicano Places. Ask if you are not sure!~

I go to Tijuana on purpose.:!: I know lots of people there. I also speak Spanish.

wessongroup - 5-29-2011 at 09:04 AM

Ken, thought your pictures on the posts of you guys four wheeling (where one can see the bull ring in the back ground) showed that there are a lot of really good people down there in TJ ... who make it every day, and live there and have fun..

Can't remember which of your posts it was or I would put a link to it...

The "event" starts out with very few people playing with the 4 x 4's.. by the end there is a Taco cart, and others selling food and drinking to all the people that showed up to let everyone see how "their" ride "looked" and how theirs it could make it through the obstacle one had to traverse ...

Thanks it all helps ... and certainly your being with the "people" does nothing but strengthen relations with Mexico ... for all ....

Stay safe and tell your wife to cheer up....:lol: ... you're a very lucky man you both enjoy life very much.. and live it full tilt... good for you...

Cristina has family in Tijuana and we both have a lot of friends there. Tijuana is a big town and like other large cities, you just need to know where to go and where to avoid. Speaking Spanish fluently is a big help when you get outside the tourist areas.

Never had a single problem in decades of travel and time spent there. Common sense and street smarts goes a long way...

Cypress - 5-29-2011 at 12:49 PM

Fear?:tumble: It's all about dollars and cents. Baja is getting to be a little too expensive. Food? About what you'd pay north of the border. Rent? Depends upon where? Fuel? :D Not really a bargain. I'd be afraid of running out of cash.

Tijuana is a fun place - especially if you are in a 4WD club!
