Pemex Boycott

rhintransit - 5-30-2011 at 06:37 AM

just got this interesting message on the La Paz Gringos Group...

"Today May 30 the population is invited to participate in a boycott of Pemex, by not purchasing fuel today. Regular gasoline has risen to 9.08 per liter. In 1997 a one day boycott happened and the price of fuel was lowered within hours of the start of the protest.
This information is a distillation of an article appearing in today's El Sudcaliforniano newspaper, link here: http://www.oem.com.mx/elsudcaliforniano/notas/n2089672.htm"

DENNIS - 5-30-2011 at 06:57 AM

Makes no sense. Eventually, drivers will go to the destinations they avoided today and the same amount of gas will be burnt. Pemex has no competition.

Eli - 5-30-2011 at 08:12 AM

Oh silly Me, all by myself, I am been doing what I can to boycott the Pemex for years now. I walk and ride my bicycle whenever and where ever I can. So far over the past 12 months I have bought 2 tanks of gasoline. Of course, I happily live a very simple life, use some public transportation. O.k, really, the truth be known, I'm not really protesting, I just hate to drive, the concept of the internal combustive engine blows me away, there just has to be a simpler way, well, for me anyway.

Yeah....it blows me away, too: especially when placed in a motorcycle frame.....takes you to great places otherwise missed when walking or bicycling....

J.P. - 5-30-2011 at 01:13 PM

Isnt the cost of gasoline in Mex. tied to a cost of living index I know its heavily subsizided by the goverment.
To boyacot is usless its owned and controlled by the goverment.

You probably saw the natural gas stations. There are a couple different brands. As far as gasoline and diesel goes its Pemex only for all the Republic.

Bajahowodd - 5-30-2011 at 04:10 PM

Boycott Pemex??

Simple fact is that not only is Pemex a government operated entity. And, the government sets the prices of fuel, much as they have historically done with many commodities, including tortillas.

However, the Pemex station you patronize, or in this case boycott, is independently owned by a franchisee. If you choose to not buy gas, you are fundamentally harming a (usually) small businessman, who is obligated to post a pump price dictated by the government.

It ain't the same as in the US. In the US, at least theoretically, one could avoid buying gas at any station supplied by BP, for instance. In CA, that would be ARCO. One would still have the option to buy at Shell, Chevron, Mobil, Etc.

Not the case in Mexico.

Doncha effing get it??? You arn't harming anybody. People don't just get in their car to drive around burning gas any more. They normally have a destination and purpose. If they boycot with this method in mind, it will be meaningless.

Don't drive there today....drive there tomorrow.

Point is....the gas will be used to accomplish that very special goal....today, or tomorrow..

If you're peeed off at a gas station.......burn it down.

The Sixties are long gone.

Boycott??????

I Guess.

It's the only reason I can think of whenever someone comes up with another Consumer Boycott Brainstorm.

Be sure and let us know if this one works out.

Making it the First in History.

That's something to shoot for.

I Guess.

Another hilarious one..........The American Banknote Company in Los Angeles used to print all their money. Don't know if they still do, but I guess the deflated peso came from the states as well.

Cheap Gas ?

MrBillM - 6-1-2011 at 07:58 PM

Of course, the only valid comparisons of Gas prices would be minus the TAXES.

BTW, I Boycotted the gasoline stations both Yesterday and Today.

Probably tomorrow. Maybe Friday, but the Boycott likely won't last through Saturday. I wonder if Shell and Chevron will make it through without me until then ?

Speaking of EXPENSIVE Gas, I bought a Gallon of Coleman Fuel at Walmart Hoy. $9.44. THAT was a "W-T-F ?" moment.

And, it turned out I didn't need to use it.

They quit printing the Mexican Peso Notes in 1978. Here is one of the last ones printed:

What's amazing is that they still print the Cuban Peso Notes despite the emargo against doing business with them.

AhhhSoooo...good bit of research there Bob. Ya still got it.

Kinda like the scene on Van Nuys Boulevard in the 60s and early 70s. Eh?

It's the car culture, stupid!

Not meant for anyone in particular. Just using an iconic phrase.

Yeah...I know, but it's all downhill and they just coast along with the engine turned off and their foot on the brake. A well-tuned vehicle will actually make gasolene under those conditions. Betcha didn't know that.

Bajahowodd - 6-2-2011 at 04:00 PM

You really need to patent that, Dennis!
