Waterboy2,

Welcome to the Nomad board. I hope someone will come along who will be able to answer your question.

I'd bet that no one here has ever gone through this process. That would explain the eerie silence. Maybe ask a fishing or beer question. You won't know what hit you.
Anyway....welcome to BajaNomad.

The short answer is yes you can if you have a drivers license from Baja California (north).

We did the reverse with a car, sort of. We imported a vehicle from the US at Tecate, took that paperwork to the local offices of transito and registered it on the off-chance that we might have gotten asked for documents along the way. We were told it was technically illegal to drive it with only the import paperwork. When we got to La Paz, my wife had no trouble getting the vehicle registered in BCS.

So, I'm going to take a chance at soiling my good name once again and say that you shouldn't have any problems registering it up there with valid paperwork from down here that hasn't expired yet.

The biggest issue I've heard of is on the first time a vehicle is registered in Mexico. That's when they usually catch the VIN numbers of vehicles stolen in other states or the US. I would think that if yours has passed that test, it shouldn't be a problem up north.

And I also agree with what Bajagringo says concerning the driver's license.

I have a feeling they don't check those VINs too thoroughly, if at all. They might see that as doing US police work which probably doesn't have their interest.

we did the reverse process...bought a car in ensenada and registered it and got plates here in baja sur. We needed to go to the motor vehicle branch to get the "baja" of the plates...called dar la baja in order to dar la alta in baja sur...kind of complicated but not too bad...just go to the vehicle registration place where you are and ask them what you have to do...better to get it from the horses mouth.

Shari is right on the money. Thats how its done down here. Here you go to the state registered and turn in your plates. You then get your baja and a temporary permiso to get you to the state of choice. Then give them the paper work and you get your new plates. But being this is Mexico who knows if its the same there?

If you are already in Baja norte the agency here can request the plates be retired from Baja Sur. I did it with a vehicle plated from Sonora...
