What is the new Toll Booth looking thingy South of Maneadero?

estebanis - 5-31-2011 at 08:30 PM

Just back from a quick trip down for the weekend. I looked to see if there was already a thread. What is the deal with the toll Booth going south and Military check point going north. It is located a mile of two north of La Grulla. There were signs about the Military Checkpoint going north but no real hints heading south. I failed to take a photo.

Probably a new Military Checkpoint. The new one on Hchy 5 at Hghy 3 looks somewhat like it could be a toll booth.

I second that. Traveling through the narrowing lane at 50 m.p.h. was kinda fun! WOoHoo!:o

I was there 1 month ago, thank you. It looked like a Military Checkpoint that was either not in use, or had just been constructed.

Ken, I know you go all the time.

I was stopped there a Mexican thing. They have always been polite and considerate.

I love it when people try to figure out what Mexico is doing.

A month ago the temp. military check was south of San Vicente at the Valle de Trinidad road jcn. The new 'thingy' near Uruapan is where they will be located once the highway widening is completed through there. It is not a toll gate.

New Checkpoint Structure

Headed South this past weekend.

You mean when the widening is completed through San Vicente? It's already done from Maneadero to just north of Acambaro/Uruapan and they are doing the grading now on the next stretch south to Ejido Ajusco, just north of Santo Tomas. It looks like they're going to replace the old blind switchback curves on the hill above the Santo Tomas winery with a straighter drop into the valley.

Thanks for the photo, Juan del Rio. Now I see what all the excitement is about, that would have caught my attention, too.

Its the starting gate for the "Baja Cannonball Run".

I've been working on my Burt Reynolds mustasche for weeks now.

It's pretty similar to the one 30 miles North of San Felipe and that is now a Military Checkpoint.

For sure. The deeper they dig in, the better the roads will be made around them.
Gets them out of the hot sun though.

If you tell the guys at the second checkpoint that you just came through the other one, they generally just let you go. Unless, of course, they feel like a guided tour of a nice air-conditioned RV.

BajaRat - 6-2-2011 at 06:33 AM

I'm pretty sure that"s the starting gate for the new horse racing venue.
Trump is turning the Urapan hot springs/laundry/bathing location into a high rise time share all inclusive, exclusive golf and tennis resort. Tiger is reported to be the course designer. You'll be able to fly in to avoid all those pesky local Mexican people.
P.S. Do any of you people even go to Mexico?

When coming from Ensenada through the first checkpoint they have a special lane (coned off) so you can get through the second one leading to San Felipe. But not from San Felipe towards Ensenada so yes you have to get inspected by both (unless they let you slide)
