Document for my Dog

Hello Folks, Depreator here. I have not posted in a while on here as I have been busy with school. Lots of good conversations and topics. Anyhow to my question. I live here in Tijuana and I have recently got a dog. My question is what papers do I need to take my dog with me accross the border. I am in the Sentri program and I have reviewed the rules and regulations and could find nothing about pets. The only paperwork I have for my dog is the shot record from the local pet store. Any help would be great. Thank you all in advance. Respectfully,

Mexico probably won't ask for anything unless he buries his teeth in the agents hand.
The US, on your return, may want to see his shot record and a certificate of health which your vet will provide.

shot record and health certificate.......always have it and never been asked. the first time I don't have it they will ask me. BUT, I will always have it. Nancy

According to the US Customs and Border Protection importation of cats and dogs is regulated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Bringing a Dog into the United States
A general certificate of health is not required by CDC for entry of pet dogs into the United States, although some airlines or states may require them. However, pet dogs are subject to inspection at ports of entry and may be denied entry into the United States if they have evidence of an infectious disease that can be transmitted to humans. If a dog appears to be ill, further examination by a licensed veterinarian at the owner's expense might be required at the port of entry.

Going into Mexico may require one but since I've never been asked I never get one. It costs a lot and all the times I've been back and forth with my dog it would literally have cost me a couple thousand. It's around $35 for the vet app. and $45 for the health certificate. When I do get asked going over I'll just find a vet by the border and get one. It'll be a hassle but worth the savings I've had so far.

That sucks. Kinda makes you want to get a bit creative with your computer and printer.

My vet here charges nothing.

Seems kind of silly. Theres no proof that the certificate belongs to that dog, no paw print no mug shot ..... nothing

We just had a pretty comprehensive thread on this very subject, about two weeks back. If I recall, the overwhelming (as in 100 percent) personal experiences reported by Nomads heading north with a dog was that they've never been asked to produce a document for their pet.

I'd check there, too. That thread is at the very top of the second page under Baja Questions and Answers. If I knew how to make a link to it, I would. But I rest assured that someone else will.

Whatever you do, don't take dog food with you heading north. Another thread indicated that that isn't allowed under any circumstances.

Wow, I sure do love this site. Thank you everybody for the information and the link. I have everything mentioned. Now at least I know what to expect when my dog goes with me, which will not be all the time. As some of you that have pets know that having your little buddy with you sometimes make getting stuff at the local petco easier. Thanks again all, now since I have not been on here for awhile i'm off to the political threads and other interesting topics.

yes.....dont take the dog food northbound.

I take dogs to our places all the time. Only issue coming back is the military check points. have the dog on a lease BEFORE you hit the checkpoint.....the guys really appreciate that a lot.

Been crossing the border for many years with dogs. The only thing I have every been asked is if they bite? I tell them only if they send me to secondary...

Reminds me of the guy who asked about the dog that was always running loose in the bar. He ask the Bartender....does your dog bite? Bartender says no...not at all. So the guy goes to pet this running around the bar' dog.........and he gets bitten by the mutt. "Hey....I thought you said your dog don't bite"?! Bartender responds....my dog don't bite.....and this running around in the bar dog' ain't mine!
