handguns

absinvestor - 6-5-2011 at 08:05 PM

I know the rules about no handguns etc. In fact it seems the only questions I get asked at the military inspections is if I have any drugs or guns. Our home is in Colorado and when traveling in the US I always carry a handgun. In the past, when I have been coming to Mexico, I just leave the handgun in Colorado. This year I am traveling in the Pacific Northwest (with my handgun) and do not plan to return to Colorado before heading to Mexico. We are driving down the coast of Oregon and California and we don't have any friends or relatives along that route. I'm wondering how those that travel in motorhomes and typically carry a handgun (especially those coming from Canada or full-time rv'ers) handle a trip into Mexico. Would there be any benefit to removing the cylinder etc?? (I have no intentions of putting the gun together in Mexico and would gladly leave it in the States if I had a place to leave it.) Surely other travelers have had this problem and I'm wondering how they handle it. Thanks Ron

Can you ship it to someone to hold it for you? It would be a shame to come across an in-depth vehicle search. I know that ammo alone is enough to ruin your life.

bajalou - 6-5-2011 at 08:38 PM

I rented a storage unit in El Centro to leave things I didn't want or couldn't take into Mexico. About $30/35 a month but a lot safer than taking a gun (in any condition) into Mexico. IMHO

absinvestor - 6-5-2011 at 08:50 PM

Thanks. Both great ideas. Ron

goldhuntress - 6-5-2011 at 09:03 PM

That's a really good question. I have no experience here but I thought if you bank at a nationwide bank maybe you could get a safe deposit box in a branch in San Diego before you cross over. Or a Nomad you trust near the border. Or you could bury somewhere safe and secluded and pick it up upon your return.

bigjohn - 6-5-2011 at 09:13 PM

If you are traveling through Orange County, California, I could keep good care of it/them for you until your trip back North. Just let me know.

John

dtbushpilot - 6-5-2011 at 09:23 PM

I'd be happy to keep it in San Diego for you....dt

drarroyo - 6-5-2011 at 09:27 PM

The illegality of carrying firearms into Mexico is a complete urban myth!!
There is absolutely no problem for you to be carrying protection for you and your family. C'mon ... haven't you heard about the killings / beheadings of RV'ers that is currently taking place!!?
I would suggest displaying said peace on your dash.
C'mon down bro, the water's fine!

bajamedic - 6-6-2011 at 12:16 AM

I can just see it now, walking into a bank with a pistol in your hand... a great way to meet your local law enforcement. JH :tumble::tumble::tumble:

the simplest solution is to leave it at home. really, you don't need a handgun to travel in the US.

capt. mike - 6-6-2011 at 05:59 AM

in most towns you can go into a police station or sheriff's office and they'll bail your firearm for you at no charge.

Of course not, do like Goat and pull up your silk panties and call 911. Then hold your breath.

I found out years ago the safest place to leave my guns while traveling was THE HOCK SHOP they are kept in a safe and when you get ready for your guns pay a small interest fee and retrive my guns:coolup:

I live in Sacramento, which may be on the route of your travel.....you may leave the weapon here with me for safe keeping.

BTW.....I used to travel with my 30-30. Became an issue. Now I carry wasp spray :light:

Bajajorge - 6-6-2011 at 09:10 AM

:light:A handgun would easily fit into a safe deposit box in a bank near where you cross into Baja.

PEACE Brother ?

MrBillM - 6-6-2011 at 09:54 AM

From the dr:

"I would suggest displaying said peace on your dash.
C'mon down bro, the water's fine!"

Would that be a PEACE sign displayed ?

rts551 - 6-6-2011 at 10:30 AM

If you knew the rules you shouldn't have to ask the question. Leave it in the states lest you become someones butt buddy.

First sentence "I know the rules". Later "any benefits to removing the cylinder"

Don't get your panties in a wad.

Typically, Carrying a Gun

MrBillM - 6-6-2011 at 12:42 PM

BTW, those that "Typically" carry a gun in an RV are in violation of the law in any U.S. state that prohibits carry in your vehicle.

That is a great idea if you do not have any one near by to hold it for you.
I'm in Oxnard Ca., and you can keep it in my safe, if that works for you.

Why Bring a Hand Gun

Gypsy Jan - 6-6-2011 at 05:49 PM

to Baja?

And risk being sent to a Mexican prison?

Sorry tp interrupt all the jokes, but why would a reasonable person feel that they need to take a hand gun with them here. (Sorry, Mr. BillM, you have made a life choice, but I assume that you have fulfilled the registration requirements to carry arms.)

There are so many other legal choices for self-defense including the much discussed usage of bug spray.

The military checkpoints have dogs that are trained to sniff for guns, as well as drugs.

How about a bank safe deposit box?

absinvestor - 6-7-2011 at 11:07 AM

Thanks for all the advise and offers to store etc. I just found out that I have a nephew who works at the shipyard in Bremerton that is leaving today for a 3 month work assignment in San Diego and I can leave the gun with him. Thanks again for all the offers. Ron

Assuming ?

MrBillM - 6-7-2011 at 11:42 AM

Sure Thing. You Betcha. A-OK.

ALL is in order.

Spearo - 6-7-2011 at 01:27 PM

I have two rules for foreign travel:

#1) Stay out of third world prison

#2) Remember Rule #1

absinvestor - 6-8-2011 at 12:13 PM

To BillM- Most states consider a motorhome to be a residence and the same rules apply. I don't know the rules for every state but in the states I normally travel a handgun in the motorhome (not my towed vehicle) is legal.

Debra - 6-8-2011 at 02:11 PM

Good question,

Not long ago I got a carry permit in WA I did this because I do alot of camping in out of the way spots in the Olympics (absinvestor, I'm 10 mins. from your nephew) and I was worried that with the current political climate I'd better get it while I could.
.

This has make me wonder, since I'm legal in WA, when traveling in other states am I still legal? (I know better that to take it to another country, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER!) I'm going to have to check this out.

Thanks for the thought provoking question.

Spearo - 6-8-2011 at 04:01 PM

Debra

CWPs are state specific. Your WA permit is good for WA and some other states that have reciprocal agreements with WA.

I have a Utah CWP which is good in 32 states, considered to be the best one out there.

absinvestor - 6-8-2011 at 05:00 PM

Debra- I grew up in Bremerton. Graduated from West HS in 64. My mom and two sisters still live there. I get up there a couple of times a year. Love to visit and I too enjoy camping in the Olympics.

In California, an RV is a Motor Vehicle...........

MrBillM - 6-8-2011 at 05:06 PM

AND, if you're on a public roadway, the rules apply as such.

In a well-publicized event a few years back, some deputies noted a Motorhome with one of those "Protected by Smith & Wesson" Bumper-Stickers. Asked the owner "Is that True" ? "Yes".

Handcuffs on.

Convicted.

Darwinian selection.
