My Baja vehicle is in San Antonio, Texas. Had taken it to Mainland from La Paz by ferry late winter.....and down to Oaxaca and then back to Texas
where I had a temporary use for it.....Anyway, it is time to get it back down to southern Baja...Lookin at my Guia Roji, there are a number of
options. Of course $ is a factor. I could work my way down to Mazatlan from Nuevo Laredo and then ferry to La Paz....My destination is San
Juanico....north of Constitucion...
Perhaps it would be better to cross the border at Agua Prieta or Nogales and on down to Guaymas and ferry over to Santa Rosalia.
Finally, I could go out of my way to Tecate and down from there... that way I would not have to bother with car permit and ferry fees etc....

In my opinion, you already answered your own question. Driving from Tecate will save you the permit fee and the ferry charge.
Just a wild guess, however, that doing so would add a day to your trip, which would mean fuel, lodging and meals.
Do the math.
Have fun.

Safest ride is best - Tecate regardless of extra expense.

An easy ride for me:
From Amarillo Texas, to Yuma the First day, then through Tecate to G N the Second nite.
From there to San Juanico would take about Half of the next day.
The Ferry nowdays is very undependable.

Is there a short cut through Mexicali and down? It has been at least a year since I took the Tecate road....How is that progressing?
gracias,

Through Mexicali would involve going through Gonzaga. some miles of washboard, old road but miles shorter. See the Gongaga thread about the road'

No car permit as far as Guaymas (last I read) as it is in the Sonora Free Zone.
Tecate to Ensenada was great last month... no detours. But, there is ongoing work to widen the remaining miles.
