Whatcha got?
Gotta crab.
Gimme it.
Zat all?
Where'd she go?
This female adult Gila woodpecker is taking advantage of the nearby estuary to provide crabs to her brood. Check out the wet head feathers; she is
evidently grabbing them out of the water heron style. Maybe we're getting a preview of the future Gila heron. The adult male seems to bring just bugs,
grubs, and berries. Gilas are consumers of a great variety of fruits and creatures, even other species' nestlings. This nest hole has at least one
each male and female chick. The light is different in these pics because they were shot over a 3-day period.
